Space Invaders Revolution DS, "New Era" mode

Post by Thunder Force »

Features:
- Space Invaders Revolution will be released on Nintendo DS in Europe before its Japanese debut
- New Era mode gameplay system expands the simple rules of Space Invaders into a modern game.
- 13 unique Invader types with different attack patterns
- 60 levels, in 20 different geographical locations
- unique progression objectives for each geographical location
- choice of directional pad or touchscreen and stylus controls
- 5 power-ups which can be combined together, including shields, additional support craft, rapid-fire weaponry, piercing laser beams.
In London, for example, players must shoot the invaders in a colour-coded order to defend Big Ben. At the Acropolis, Athens, the challenge comes in the form of a heavily armoured but lone invader, which takes several well-timed direct hits to kill. Other novel forms of videogaming's archetypal aggressors, such as shadow invaders that blink in and out of invulnerability and giant invaders that must be killed piece-by-piece...

This is really great news. I've wondered how the touch screen might somehow figure in a traditional shoot-em-up. Any information or speculations about how the stylus would function?

That sounds pretty cool. Now if only Namco would do Galaga 2005 on the DS, I'd be sold on the DS.

I my Space Invaders DS shipped on Wednesday; hopefully I will have it today. I will leave some impressions after I toy with it for a bit.

Telling from the screens, it looks like the enhanced mode of the game has a Gradius like power up system that is activated by the touch screen.

Space Invaders DS isn't Space Invaders Revolution. Space Invaders R is being developed and published by Empire whereas Space Invaders DS was developed by Taito and published by Nintendo (according to NCSX).

Gallery images of the two on various sites seem to be identical. So chances are they just renamed the game for different territories.
