PS2 vertical shooters don't use much space?

Post by infested_ysy »

hey shmups.system11.org,

I just went to my local pirate bay and bought myself this "PS2 Sky Shooter heaven 7 in 1" thing, that has Raiden 3, Contra Shattered Soldier, ESPgaluda, Homura, Gigawings Generations, DoDonPachi:DaiOuJou, and Gradius for USD$1 (lol Malaysia, land of the pirates YARR!)

Surprisingly, all the games are complete. There's no deleted cutscenes, deleted music/sounds/voices and whatnot. All the titles plays like normal, which begs the question: how much data does the producers actually used on the DVD on average? I'm very surprised that 7 games can be crammed into one DVD, and plays perfectly fine, with no loading issues and whatnot. (just to note, I have the original ESPgaluda to compare it with, it's the exact same thing, no quality loss in music/sound and whatnot)

this kind of thing sometimes make me feel ashame being a malaysian  there's no way i could find any original shmups, or any other game, from the local stores, that's why i have to pay extra shipping fees and stupid custom duties for my games

Different standards of living, different currencies, different situations.

An original PS2 game would translate to around RM120. Almost 10% of what an average person earns per month over here. Also no such thing as game rentals around :(

It's hard for college/high school students to buy them too, given how there's no minimum wage thing over here, and they're usually paid RM3~4 per hour for a part time job. Compared to USD$6-something minimum wage the people over The States enjoy

Most shmups are actually quite small in size. ESPGaluda for example is only 300M, but thankfully was put on DVD (being what 3.2G in size?) to read better on a PS2. So I'm not surprised you could fit that many on one DVD.

If a game costs a tenth of a months salary, surely you would need a mortgage to buy the PS2 itself?

If you can afford the system, you can most definately afford the games.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
