XMD question

Post by GateofThunderforceIII »

A long while ago, I purchased an S-video modded Genesis 3 from Matt and instantly fell in love with the Genesis all over again. I still have and treasure it. But I recently read an ariticle from sega-16.com about a little device called XMD which allows one to hook up a MegaDrive to a TV through S-Video and other video hook ups.

I would love to see some of my Sega CD games in this form. Do any of you know if this device is worth it? As for Genesis hardware, I have a Nomad, CDX, and a spare Gen 3...all US. Is the XMD compatible with these US hardware? I noticed one on ebay and the seller says it is compatible with Nomad and CDX but I assume he's talking about the JP versions. The seller is from Japan.

Please help...and I greatly appreciate any help you can give.

The XMD is just a vedio encoder which encode the RGB out of MD and out put NTSC S-Vedio.

Your GEN have to got the same pin out as a Japanese MD to have it work. IIRC Jap MD model 1 and Model 2 got different pin out. So the XMD might only work on one model, unless you jam a cable yourself.

BTW, some membee had mensioned in here of the idea of converting a XMD unit to an universal RGB to S-Vedio converter. But I think XMD only work on system outputing 60fps.

AFAIK (and I could be wrong), the Micomsoft Gen/MD video converters are:

XMD-1 = for model 1 consoles, only provides a pass through for the RGB signal via DB-15 port and 8 pin DIN
XMD-2 = for model 1 consoles, converts RGB into S-video signal and provides an RGB pass through via DB-15 port and 8 pin DIN
XMD-3 = for model 2 consoles, converts RGB into S-video signal and provides an RGB pass through via DB-15 port and 8 pin DIN

S-video is definitely better than the standard Composite out, but I'd recommend saving the money to buy a 15khz compatible RGB monitor.

I've got a 32X and was hoping to use my XMD-2 on it but couldn't. If the eBay seller says it's compatible with Nomad and CDX, I think you can take his word for it. JPN version of these systems should be the same as American, at least in terms of hardware ports.

Thank you all for your replies! Azmum, are you able to use your XMD-2 with at least the Genesis? If so, how is it? Hope you're happy with it at least.

Yes. I got my XMD-2 connected to my US model 1 Genesis and it works like a dream. It was expensive but definitely worth it.

Hmm, a Genesis 3? I'm just curious, why did you go with a 3 over a 2 or a 1?
