Re: Shoot 'em ups through the ages - Podcast Episode
The grizzled old-school veteran arcade gamers like myself recall that Namco's Galaxian released in the arcades back in 1980 along with Namco's sequel to Galaxian under the name of Galaga that was released in 1981. Namco's follow up to Galaga was Galaplus (aka Galaga 3) was released to arcades back in 1985. Namco's Galaga '88 arcade game was the fourth one in the Galaxian series that was released in 1988.
Sure, I've seen/played the "Super Galaxians" arcade variant at a local arcade hangout in the mid-1990s. Not to mention Namco/Raw Thrills' release of Galaga on the World's Largest Arcade cab setup circa 2018/2019 (via software update).

mentioning Cuphead and Gunstar Heroes of all things but neglecting to mention any post-DDP CAVE game is incredibly strange.
What was the research process for this?
as far as I can recall... Cuphead only has... what, 3 shmup stages? and they're not even fun. Never played Gunstar but I've heard the shmup sections suck there too.

Regardless of one's opinion of the game, neglecting to mention Battle Garegga is a massive oversight.
Re: Shoot 'em ups through the ages - Podcast Episode
I listened to it while commuting today, thanks for sharing.
If the listener approaches it with the mindset that it is a pod by and for a more general retro gamer's audience intended to be widely accessible and nostalgic, I think it was an OK listen. The early history (like early 80s) was a pretty detailed year by year review. One can tell the main podcaster has a stronger relation to these games.
Some positives. The podcasters' involved was in a good spirit, seemed to have fun recording the pod, and portrayed the genre in a positive light. And some interesting context was provided for some of the early arcade stgs that I appreciated.
Some negatives. The 90s and onwards was very thin and full of retro gamer clichés, like the only developer mentioned was Treasure, Radiant Silvergun was the best shmup of all time without any real justification or comparison, some patreon viewer mentioned dodonpachi but the podcaster's were unable to name the developer. Impressions of the games were often superficial like "such a good game", "yeah, great intro", "absolutely, a great game" and then moving on to the next game. Ikaruga, the color polarity was mentioned in passing and that's it.

Thank you all for the kind feedback - all is appreciated! We aim to target the retro gamer community, so apologies if we were not fully locked in to the shooter audience.
