X68000 (fake?) samples/protos on Yahoo Japan

Post by Tyree_Cooper »

Hey there, sorry if I suddenly appear from outer space, I have been lurking around here for years but never really wrote anything.

I wonder if there are any prototype and/or X68000 aficionados around here?

There's a seller on Yahoo that keeps listing a bunch of protos/samples, always using the same photos, and he keeps selling the same games over and over, which is already extra suspicious.

I bought a copy of Akumajo Dracula for 15,000 yen. (not this one, but he keeps relisting it with the same photos, with adjusted pricing depending on what the previous copy sold for):

his auctions here

I own "the real deal" which has a different typo and title, so I thought it was a demo from a slightly different time in development. I think it's more likely a photocopied sticker. You can still see the border under the title, that's because the title is supposed to be on a sticker on top of the generic Konami sample sticker.

I got some photos from the shopping agent but they aren't good, so I will just examine my copy closely and take better photos.

I feel like the chances that his stuff is real are close to zero, and feel like an idiot for not thinking straight BEFORE buying.

Everything is just shady, also the fact that he used to say in his auctions that the disks came from the stock of an old shop, but when selling the same exact games later on, he dropped that line.

So yeah, be careful when buying protos from Japan. I heard more and more sellers make convincing fake protos, e.g. for Famicom games, especially those Konami that use a standardised label with RC stamped codes...

Not sure if I'm allowed to post photos, will do later to show some comparisons between the new copy I will receive and old internet photos of the real sample.

i also think i could find what font is used for the "X68000 [悪魔城ドラキュラ]" title, since it doesn't match the real sample. if the font was created after the first half of 1993, it would be a definitive proof of a fake.

There is a Facebook group, but its mostly sales with highly inflated prices. The Japanese community mostly sticks to twitter.

By the way the Z2 crowdfunding is doing insanely well, and the Z2 looks a lot better than the standard Z. I may go for a Z2 XVI myself.
