Sega Saturn Memory Carts - 1MB vs. 4MB vs. AR

Post by NoAffinity »

I have seen this topic discussed quite a bit, but very little empirical data. There's the theory that the 1MB cart outperforms either of the other carts for games like Metal Slug and Marvel Super Heroes. I thought it worth doing some actual 60fps vidoe capture of the different RAM carts in action, and doing a frame count, to get some hard evidence.

What I've produced below is a very (very) small sampling to start, but I intend to do much more, and hopefully others will be encouraged to do so as well.

The test environment:
US Model 2 Saturn w/ good cart slot
US Marvel Super Heroes
SCART-->OSSC @ 4x-->Magewell HDMI capture card-->OBS @ 1920x1080/60

The carts used:
Sega HSS-0150 1MB original RAM cart
Capcom 4MB originanl RAM cart
Pseudo Saturn Kai Lite flashed AR 4M Plus

The two scenarios were compared for each of the carts:
-Blackheart vs. Juggernaut on Blackheart's stage
1) Now Loading... - I isolated the Now Loading... screen from the first frame where the text first appears, to the last frame that it is present before the round starts
2) Low Punch Inferno - I isolated from the first of the attack animation to the last frame before Juggernaut is fully recovered (standing/crouching)
-The number is the total number of frames of the video.

Of course, if there is already some empirical data out there and I'm just wasting my time on this, somebody please point me in the right direction.
