Scaler for 720p 120hz to 1080p 120hz?

Post by Abwezi »

Hello. I recently got an HDFury x4 to attempt to use with my LG C1 to get 3D out of it. It might sound like a useless endeavor but I actually already have this display working pretty well as an 'unofficial' 3d display with Nvidia's 3D Vision, due to the excellent BFI feature on this TV. Well I discovered an issue with my plan, the 3D output of the HDFury x4 ideally is 1280x720@120hz and I incorrectly assumed that this being a 120hz display would accept it, but unfortunately my TV shows "unsupported format"

I went in to NVCP on my computer and confirmed. I could not force 720p at 120hz. 1080p and 1440p at 120hz work fine though. So unless I can find some way to upconvert this signal to 1080p or higher I am stuck with the less than desireable 60hz 3d. Does anybody know of a device that will accomplish this? Ones that won't break the bank for me to purchase? I'm only aware of insanely expensive devices that maybe could solve my problem, like the Tink 4k or Roland VC-100UHD

Wait a second. You've gotten a newish C1 to display 3D without the TV officially supporting it??

That's what the HDFury X4 does, though I've never tried it myself I've always been curious to.

That is amazing. I still have my old LG because I still want to watch 3D movies. I had no clue this was a thing. I can finally upgrade my TV but still watch in 3D??

I really wish some company would just slap a FPR layer on a 120hz 4K TV

I wish I could also chime in with a helpful suggestion, but alas I am merely chiming in to say: woah, never heard of/seen that Roland scaler before. It looks really cool!

I can only image how unsettlingly more expensive it is than the RT4K, lol (not saying I would want one, just assuming it’s ludicrously expensive given the market it’s geared towards).

Keep in mind that you're going to lose a *lot* of sharpness scaling 720p to 1080p, since it's a non-integer ratio below 2.0. If you can do an integer nearest-neighbour scale to 1440p instead, and then let your TV scale that to native panel res (2160p), you'll preserve a lot more of the original sharpness. Of course this is content-dependent. A computer desktop would look terrible scaled from 720p to 1080p to 2160p, but look fine scaled from 720p to 1440p to 2160p, while for video content (like live action stuff) it won't matter as much.

High-end scalers like the RT4K can do a good job with either content, doing the 720p to 1440p with lanczos or nearest-neighbour, but I suspect you'll struggle to find cheap scalers that can do even 1080p120 output, let alone 1440p120.
