You dislike AVGN because of his hairline? This is better than your Mario 64 and OOT takes.
Re: Gaming channels im not too keen of.
The Earthbound one is heavens above his average modern output.

Also, congratulations on surpassing the much-coveted 669 subscriber threshold.
Ahoy was a clear motivator for me to stop trying to rely on collaboration with friends, and just go it alone with script writing and generally a better standard of work.
In the KF2(jp) video there's a line that's so Ahoy it's basically a tribute.
"It's a salvo of projectiles that explode on impact.
Fast, accurate, and deadly. A worthy weapon for a wizard waging war. "
The other key influences for that vid and i guess the whole series were Game Maker's Toolkit, and Tim Rogers' Action Button reviews. The latter of which would probably be very divisive here hahah.

Well the opposite of the topic.
I’ve really been digging Gaming Historian.
I put him on my iPhone when I jog on the treadmill.
I’ve splurged through over 30 episodes in past couple months and lost 18 lbs because of it.

I recently learned that Zophar (of Zophar's Domain fame) streams retro gaming stuff on Twitch.
I also learned that the Twitch 'bits' economy will make a man stoop to shocking levels of self-degradation; dude was doing a fairly interesting retrospective on his old site by way of a WinXP virtual machine running Netscape Navigator, talking over its origins, the interesting state of early emulation, and playing some terrible MIDI renditions of classic retro tunes. Nostalgic stuff.
All was well for a time, and then one of the chat moderators single-handedly started a 'hype train' event. This caused the stream to screech to a halt, prompting its host to start dancing and ad-libbing lyrics over a specially-cued 80s anime soundtrack, encouraging further bit donations and subscriptions.
This debasement continued for some minutes, with the same mod throwing in just enough bits to keep extending the timer to two additional loops... I had to turn it off in the end.
I've seen as much questionable shit online as the next 90s kid, but witnessing the information age equivalent of DANCE FOR ME CLOWN AHAHAHA come out of nowhere like that was too weird for me.
Ha, I think I picked up on that tribute line while watching - it recalls the 'ard brit relaying hard facts about a piece of no-nonsense military hardware. An underrepresented archetype if you ask me, outside of the history channel, Ahoy, and the (bonus and quite good) audiobook that came with Brigador.
And I've somehow managed to dodge Tim Rogers until now, but my goodness... Not 10 minutes into his Doom video essay and I'm already getting a This Is Your Brain On Videogames vibe, like an informational firehose as wielded by Mike Myers

I relate to the lone wolf approach - high quality solo-self-made is how I approach my game dev meddling these days, and it just feels right despite taking a bloody long time.Blinge wrote:Ahoy was a clear motivator for me to stop trying to rely on collaboration with friends, and just go it alone with script writing and generally a better standard of work.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
Re: Gaming channels im not too keen of.
I had a hairline issue when I was 18. Ironically, the older I get, the more my age starts to match with my hairline. When I'm 60, I'll look like every other old guy. But I sure was crushed at 17, lmao.

Huh, this guy popped up in a random Guru Larry retrospective I was watching the other day. Apparently he got a big front page push from YT in the mid 2000s by virtue of being a "less sweary" James Rolfe, ended up as one of the first ever YouTube partners, then shot back down to relative obscurity after his promo got pulled in response to everyone shitting on him for being offbrand AVGN.KimagureMachibuse wrote:The Irate gamer

James's autobiography came out recently, and well, more people have accepted the speculation that he's autistic.
It's amazing that one of the old school Let's Players, Deceased Crab, is still uploading videos. I guess he'll never have the same relevance as when he popularized La-Mulana to a new audience, but still a good run for some guy just playing games.

No one I know watches, or likes the guy, yet somehow he has withstood the test of time, so he has his audience, but I am not one of them. As for Hancock, he always comes off as a little arrogant to me, he is friends with Metal Jesus I believe, and another of those cancers to rising game prices.KimagureMachibuse wrote:The Irate gamer

Re: Gaming channels im not too big of.
Well I've done it, I've finally dropped my subscription to Modern Vintage Gamer's YouTube channel. I promised myself that I would unsubscribe him if he made another SurfShark sponsored video and guess what? He did (his Goldeneye 007 video in particular) so as a result I took action. I will not be watching his newer videos at all now. I wish he'd just pick something else to sponsor his videos at this point.
Re: Gaming channels im not too big of.
Coincidentally, I did the same, at least insofar as removing him from the commandline RSS hackery I use to dodge YouTube's ever worsening ad-fuelled ecosystem. Nobody gets my sub anymore
Though more because seeing GoldeneEye 007 is a mess pop up in my feed was the straw that broke the clickbait's back; I have less and less patience for creators who have genuine talent but choose to wilfully waste it on algorithmic shite. Cough Linustechtips Cough.

Re: Gaming channels im not too big of.
There was one many years ago that went by AlphaOmegaSin and I could not get with his content. I don't know if he's still around but he was an aggressive, edgy, metal head that just screamed and swore about everything with absolutely no nuance to his topics.
Thankfully that format seems to have taken a backseat. Lately I've been bothered by "normie" type stuff like ActMan. Or faux Gaming Historian channels that can't talk about any game without a 6 minute opening dissertation about the history of Nintendo. Before they go into a 2 minute sponsor for a VPN and then talk about nothing.
The best gaming channel to me is Nerrel. Love that guy.

Re: Gaming channels im not too big of.
Ah, that takes me back. I recall digging around trying to find a comprehensive playthrough of Pathologic before the franchise got resurrected for a sequel, and the only channel that fit the bill was the edgiest lil' goth lad, complete with baphomet intro card and lavender town theme tune. Though less aggressive edge and more Life Is Suffering, very on-brand and painful to watch.
Re: Gaming channels im not too big of.
YouTube was a very different place with different standards so maybe it's a bit unfair for me to rip on channels from like 2010. But to be honest, I can't decide if it's just worse and production values have increased or if things are only marginally better than they were.Lander wrote:Ah, that takes me back. I guess it's only tangentially related to this thread but one thing I know was way better back then was watching speedruns. Used to be it was just footage of the game and maybe a timer. Nothing else. Now?
-FaceCam taking up 20% of the screen
-Donation animations constantly rolling in
-Big obnoxious borders shrinking the game scene
-Twitch chat stream

Re: Gaming channels im not too big of.
I feel like my proverbial sub box has improved over time, with more quality getting curated in and bumping out filler channels that I only followed because they were alright and watchable.
But in terms of the general landscape, eh. The quality band seems as wide as ever, just with a higher top end (and i guess perceived average, insofar as trash dressing itself up as treasure) on account of the domain getting gradually codified through a combo of derivative content and platform MO shifts.
The whole Twitch explosion has certainly had an effect, since streams are displacing non-live stuff and bringing with it all the power of godawful stream layouts.
One related thing I've noticed is that archive channels seem to be taking a backseat; of the three twitch streams I regularly follow, only two of them actually keep local copies, and only one of those uploads a persistent VOD before twitch auto-purges them a month-ish after broadcast. Content is becoming ephemeral, and that's wack for someone who's interested, but doesn't care for the FOMO of tuning into a live schedule.

Kid Shoryuken. A reseller who absolutely sucks at games and has very limited knowledge on what appears to be his passion - video games.
Re: Gaming channels im not too big of.
Ah, poseurs. I remember this one scalper trying to sell me an NTSCJ copy of Hard Corps, responding to a condition enquiry with a heaving CTRL+V (at least I hope he didn't type all this shit offhand), on "TEH TREASURE TEAM," and their mythic past, inventing Contra and Castlevania and Goemon at Konami, before time-travelling to invent Taromaru at TWI. He concluded with a plug for his copy of Alien Soldier, seasoned with that other RETRO GAYMING dilettante favourite: "BE WARNED THO, M8, ITS 1 OF THE HARDEST GAMES KNOWN TO MAN"
I wouldn't have remembered, or cared, normally - I don't go around nerd-raging when people on here say similar - but nowhere was an answer as to my question, of whether the black n' blood-red spine was sunfaded to dull pink in his photo, or if he'd just taken a bad pic, and now I was kinda pissed at the stupid plonker peddling his Straight Outta 2002 GameFaqs knowledge, so I didn't bother replying.
There's nothing wrong with not knowing teh d33p l0r3 of stuff you're selling, or even re-selling, but god damn - poseurs are universally disliked for a reason. I guess he thought his battered copy would fetch a higher price if I knew its esteemed fictional pedigree? Dracula Densetsu aka The Castlevania Adventure has a staff roll promising of bacchanal - Maegawa! Nakazato! Hanzawa! - and it's... an exercise in temperance. (NON firing on all cylinders is the worst part, hard to stop playing 3;)

Recently seen a video about old fromsoft games. it's your usual lazy gaming tourism type video. It spends probably 20% of the video just complaining about control schemes. "hhuh OLD games LOL "

but..yeah i'm not sure who benefits from such nonsense. would that toxify my image?

I can relate to some extent. My base instinct when presented with fools or disingenuity tends to be IMMA END THIS MAN'S WHOLE CAREER, but it's an expensive reactor to run. Better to divert that white hot fusion into something productive if you're going to commit to it

I was going to proffer similar, but said "fuck it" because I was a bit hammered, and not like to offer young superstar Burinju potentially career-altering advice in such state.
But FWIW, when it comes to the raging 24/7 Naked Twister: Master's Cup that is die interwebzeit, I try to operate on conviction. Do I have something to say? Or do I just want to rub my nuts on some fuckboi's face? I'm gonna have to be careful, venturing in, lest I get someone's arse all over me! It might not be worth the effort at all!
This being a niche hardc0r3 g@m3r community, most of us will have strong feelings on our hobby. The R2RKMF thread came about because Mad King Edmans committed the blasphemy of blaming his crummy, erratic performance on an innocent videogame. I could not brook such an outrage in the house of BLOODF! (`w´メ)
Ate up a lot of free time going back and forth with our lunatic founder. Ended up getting a pretty nice thread outta it though, and it's all about the hard gayming ultimately.
I second Lander's advice on remaining scholarly. Depending on how you wish to proceed, perhaps keep the old "Here's my BIG MEATY CAWK, bitches. (■`w´■) *sound of salami hitting countertop* Juicy enough for ya???" as a backup strat, should the rabbling shitbirds prove insensate to your eminently well-sourced/well-deployed FACTS+LOGIC.
Or perhaps incorporate just a bit of that? ;3 It's not a shitpost if it's true!
