Swiss - remove dedlicker filter in 480i on GameCube?
Would anyone know if Swiss can disable the Gamecube’s 480i flicker filter when outputting 480i for a sharper image? I’m running an NTSC cube on a 480i consumer CRT.
I realise that Swiss will disable the filter when outputting at 480p, but as I say I need to output 480i. The PS2 outputs 480i without a filter & I really like it’s crisp image - I’d love to get the same result from my cube.

I’d thought so but could well be wrong - do you know if the PS2 has a deflicker filter & if so, is it implemented differently to the GameCube’s? The Cube’s filter seems to give a particularly soft image.orange808 wrote:Does it?andykara2003 wrote:The PS2 outputs 480i without a filter

On PS2 at least some of the earlier games did not have a filter, hence the "jaggie-gate" when it first launched. I think later games implemented some though to combat the aliasing. I too prefer the sharper non-filtered 480i on both machines.

Nice one - how do you go about removing the deflicker filter on GC? Are you using Swiss?Josh128 wrote:I too prefer the sharper non-filtered 480i on both machines.

I have Swiss, just havent played around with that function yet as Im currently using on 480p sets. Some games, like SSB, have options to turn it off built in. Just going off of memory that turning it off was much more crisp than the default setting.

For PS2 it varies from game to game. Same with GC from what I've seen. Almost every if not all XBOX games have it enabled though and looks awful. Like someone smeared Vaseline over the screen.
There is very little info out there on how to disable it on Xbox other than softmodding your console.

Very interesting stuff. Apparently the ‘jaggie gate’ of the earlier PS2 games was partly due to the early dev kits being limited to a 240 line front buffer - check https://youtu.be/brMW6KFue-I at 6m20s.
I still can’t seem to nail down whether the PS2 used a deflicker filter though.
EDIT: Looking at that video at 10m58s, it appears that most PS2 games don’t use a deflicker filter. That’s why it looks so nice & clean on my consumer Sony - I’m looking forward to trying GC games with the filter off.

I'm not so sure about that one. Something like Ridge Racer V or Eternal Ring look razor sharp compared to any of the Ratchet & Clank games. And their progressive scan modes are really blurry, suggesting to me they're thick on anti-aliasing filters on top of a significantly sub-640x448p rendering resolution.it appears that most PS2 games don’t use a deflicker filter
