Wasn't planning to get this but when I though about how good a job M2 does with these I said fuck it and pulled the trigger. No slowdown will probably make all of these different games. GG Aleste III also looks sic as hell.

When are they going to start releasing stuff on PC

I can say that no slowdown makes a ton of difference. It's such a great collection. Lastly, yes, Gg Aleste 3 is fantastic.

Didn’t catch any new TOAPLAN news on the stream, for those wondering.
Re: M2 Toaplan collection
The stream was basically a 3 hour documentary about Power Strike II. Interesting stuff and worth a watch if you enjoy the game but nothing new in terms of news about other releases.

Thanks, this is a bummer. Was hoping for that Toaplan info!!!!ATTRACTS wrote:The stream was basically a 3 hour documentary about Power Strike II. Interesting stuff and worth a watch if you enjoy the game but nothing new in terms of news about other releases.
That new game looks sweet, any explanation on what arcade hardware it will run on?
Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Any information on Power Strike III (not a typo)? The update notes for the Aleste Collection mention Power Strike III and Mark III and comments on twitter suggest it's a brand new game for SMS/Mark III.ATTRACTS wrote:The stream was basically a 3 hour documentary about Power Strike II. Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Sorry to burst your bubble, but afaik the update was to put the "Sega Mark III" (in a nutshell, the equivalent to the SMS in Japan) logo at the start of Aleste, because it wasn't there before (but should have been).
The tweet that you mentioned in another topic is someone simply asking for M2 to make Aleste III as a new game for Master System - not a response to news.
The update also mentions Power Strike II in relation to fixing a bug where people got on the ranking if they used continues, but the name of the game has the character "に" after it. Did you see the last part of "Power Strike IIに" as "III" perhaps?

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Yeah, I could only read the English words in the update and had no idea what it actually said. To make things more confusing, that post from a JP poster wishing for a Power Strike III came up around the same time. Not sure how much was lost in translation due to google translate either.mojilove wrote:Sorry to burst your bubble, but afaik the update was to put the "Sega Mark III" (in a nutshell, the equivalent to the SMS in Japan) logo at the start of Aleste, because it wasn't there before (but should have been).

Exciting!

Loving home versions as DLC.
Not loving £40.00 for Heli / Kyukyoku.
Ah, seems the pricing was wrong - I was sure last time I converted 1,000y was roughly a tenner? 25 quid is a little more palatable I suppose, but even so, in light of the Cave releases, still a bit pricey. I'd have preferred no gadgets, and a compilation or two Capcom-style, without the shitty 3D wrapper of course. Still good news though.

I was thinking along the same lines when it was first announced M2 would start porting Toaplan stuff, give em all to me cheap and dirty right now. But now that I see they're going all in on the deluxe treatment I'm all about it.I'd have preferred no gadgets, and a compilation or two Capcom-style, without the shitty 3D wrapper of course. Still good news though.
The M2 ports really show their value over time. The training options, low latency controls, replay saving, full autofire options, active leaderboards etc. etc. all really come into their own with long term play.
The way I see it, a lot of today's gamers are spoiled for choice and try to straddle the line between way too many games and genres, coveting new releases and then quickly deleting them after a week. It's hard to really get your money's worth out of any game that way, let alone a classic arcade title.
Edit: And to be fair the full version includes 13 games.

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Fuck's sake you guys are wet, soggy blankets. At least there's already a physical version announced so that's one less thing for people to bitch about.
I'd bet money the next set will be Tatsujin with the same treatment. Never saw it coming that they would go all out and do the console ports as well.

In all honesty, if Japanese releases are your thing, the only realistic options for good coverage going forward are the Switch, and...mostly just the Switch. But PC does alright.Astro City II wrote:Ugh no Xbox version again.

Sony are all but abandoning Japan & winding down support for 3rd parties. Xbox threw money down a well to get Japanese support for the original & 360, but that seems to have dried up and Japanese publishers have been largely moving their resources elsewhere.
Nintendo have been steamrolling sales in Japan for years now, monopolizing the top 20. The economics for Xbox just don't appear to be there at the moment outside of major releases with cross-cultural appeal like Resident Evil.
Re: M2 Toaplan collection
I kind of agree with your initial comment, but there have already been so many arcade releases now that putting serious time into them all is pretty much impossible. But at six quid a throw, I don't mind so much. And I NEVER delete (although the 512gb SD card is getting dangerously full now):DRastan78 wrote:The way I see it, a lot of today's gamers are spoiled for choice and try to straddle the line between way too many games and genres, coveting new releases and then quickly deleting them after a week. Yeah the 7480yen version includes 13 games, but the £25 quid DL version seems to be two games, with another tenner for the DLC. Don't get me wrong, including home versions is a brilliant idea and I'm on board with that, but I could have done without the gadgets, and the title games sold separately at a tenner a throw. Tiger Heli might be a classic, but it's one I'd probably pass on these days. Kyukyoku is brilliant for sure, but it'll take some consideration on my part at that price, where 70% of the AA range is a no-brainer. Low-latency and decent autofire options are par for the course on Arcade Archives, and (eventually) the Capcom comp.
Who am I kidding? They'll release on a Thursday here, and I'll go 'nah Marc, it's just too much for two older arcade ports'. Then on Friday, I'll get pissed up in the house and buy them lot

There's STG dev's who make games for Xbox. Granzella, Zerodiv, City Connection. If they can make it work then why can't M2? I'm at the point where I'll just support what comes and will ignore M2 from now on.
Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Yeah the ACA series is great especially when you want to check out a game on a more casual level. They cover a lot of ground, have solid emulation and are affordable. M2 does take that more hardcore specialist approach which I also appreciate. Both have their purpose, and IMO both have an appropriate price for what they do. Latency is usually better on the M2 stuff by a frame or so.kind of agree with your initial comment, but there have already been so many arcade releases now that putting serious time into them all is pretty much impossible. But at six quid a throw, I don't mind so much.
Personally I wouldn't want M2 to simplify their approach just to hit a lower price point. Especially bc there are so many other options for that. If it's a game I don't plan on playing enough to justify the price I'll skip it. I passed on Esprade. I want to support M2, but not to the extent I'll pay 40 or 50 bucks to play a game I won't play extensively.
Good luck with that.I already have a Switch, In all honesty it's not somewhere that I'd like to build a collection of Shmups.

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Because the releases these devs do isn't on the same level of what M2 is doing. The M2 Shotriggers style releases cost a lot more money to develop. When the Xbox barely exists in Japan, and they know sales are going to be extremely low, its understandable why they don't release on it. Even with the releases they do that are on the same level, like the Cotton ones from City Connection they aren't coming to the Xbox platform. I would guess that Battle Garegga and Dangun Feveron didn't move enough units to justify releasing future titles on Xbox.Astro City II wrote:Sengoku Strider wrote: There's STG dev's who make games for Xbox. Re: M2 Toaplan collection
I'm fine with the price. All the extras encourage you to focus on a single game, which can be difficult to do when you have a PC full of emulated titles. I think that the Switch and PS4 aren't ideal platforms though, at least from the perspective of a long-term view. Both Sony and Nintendo (but especially Nintendo) are quick to eject older online platforms that means all the online scores, replays, DLC and patches disappearing. The Switch is also stupidly easy to emulate, opening a wide avenue for piracy, so I don't imagine that being a reason for platform choice. That said, I don't think the Xbox is a particularly attractive platform either, I certainly have no intention of buy a Series S/X any time soon, especially seeing as Microsoft seem to have zero interest in making Cave X360 titles backwards compatible. At the end of the day, I think it comes down to resources, M2 simply doesn't have the man-power to oversee so many builds.

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
I feel like the best approach is like the Switch version of Mushi. For me ACA is a little too bare bones and M2 is a little much. Mushi had just enough features and a great price point. I'll buy ACA and M2 stuff, but only the really worthwhile releases. Capcom also had massive bang for your buck with the Arcade Stadium. I bought 2 and 3 and could probably play just that for like a year. Going to pass on this and hope they go through with the Tatsujin games.
Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Hmmm... so are the home versions/ports DLC, no matter what version you buy...?
Or is there a super complete physical version with everything, like their Darius release?

M A R V E R O U S
I was worried these might slip away, like their PS1/Saturn forebears did a short lifetime ago. What a relief! I'm glad to see them going with the ShotTriggers super-deluxe approach. We already have ACA for regular, no-frills releases of 80s/90s games, and between both companies, the sheer tonnage of first-rate material already covered is unprecedented. No need to rush.
(what about DECO doe? >_> M2 PREZ imma pay you FOUSANDS for Thunder Zone & Wolf Fang & Midnight Resistance & Heavy Barrel & Bloody Wolf & Nitro Ball & Night Slashers, AKA The Most Manful Tale Ever Told ngl still hype about PSYCHONICS OSCAR )
Arcade Stadium is very nearly a model of excellence for large-scale bundles, but it's got noticeable input lag across the board (on PS4, at least). While it's still very playable, I'd be happier paying eight bucks for carefully-optimised standalones of the games I wanted. (which would still be ~75% of the current set, easily; hoping Magic Sword and Black Tiger pop up, it's really only the needle-precise STGs where I notice a bit of drag). Not meaning to sound frivolous or anything, I just prefer micro over macro approaches to home conversions.Creamy Goodness wrote:Capcom also had massive bang for your buck with the Arcade Stadium. Re: M2 Toaplan collection
I was concerned about the DLC but it only seems to be for the digital edition based on the pricing info. Phew. Definitely not enough to warrant an arcade version and a console version like the Darius collection! Glad they've woken up to physical releases instead of digital ones locked behind region-specific storefronts. And Switch releases, would love for M2 to revisit Battle Garegga and Mahou Daisakusen for Switch releases.
Completely fine with the price, especially if it gets me arcade AND Mega Drive Kyukyoku Tiger. Anything else is a bonus, but having a record of Micronics being not terrible via the Famicom version is kind of fun!
Hopefully we'll finally see a worthwhile Flying Shark home port out of this too...

I'd laugh if they went and bugfixed FC Kyuukyoku Tiger It's a startlingly lovable effort by Micronics' usual dire standards, but don't get too close
Hishouzame was among the four initial candidates (along with Kyuukyoku Tiger, Out Zone and Tatsujin Ou), and it's my joint-#1 pick too. I don't care if they do Hishou and Same Same seperately, or bundled. Either way, the former has been without an arcade-accurate home version for entirely too long.

Love me some Twin Cobra arcade! I'll pick this up for sure. Tiger Heli kind of pisses me off when I play it though, so many sniper tanks .
The cockpit-style widgets are kind of goofy, but I suppose it's as good as anything else to fill the side panels.

Incorrect. M2 are the best and they are doing what they can to keep the genre going. You have a console with (in the last 6-7 years), the worst Japanese/shmup support.Astro City II wrote:Ugh no Xbox version again.
