You're welcome, and I know how you feel! I had to wait for the second batch too. I hope the new features astound you, as they have for me.

Marco (the guy who makes downscaling videos) just made a review on the OSSC Pro:

You also need to solder a header like this into it.
Re: OSSC Pro
Yes just received it last week, I was not able to do many tests for now, but I actually used it as a donwscaler for my jvc 15k crt & pc 31k, it work like a charm & the crt 120hz is freaking beautifull on the 31k ^^jaffa225man wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2024 7:16 amYou're welcome, and I know how you feel! And I love how fast it does 480i/240p transition !!!
Just tested few snes/amiga/neogeo/ps1/saturn games and it works like a charm with 1440p ^^
Have a batch of tests to do with my full setup, and I have to put it in harmony with my 4k setup to have the hdmi in to work with all my HD/4k console :p
Re: OSSC Pro
Edit: Maybe I'm wrong about the following and the Newhaven display does use similar character shapes as the Raystar and Winstar? Looking at the datasheets the character design seems to be the same, unlike the product photos that show a bold version (and the photo on the Newhaven website which seems to show a different model altogether from the listed product.) My OSSC Pro hahs a Winstar OLED, but it also seems to be unavailable for individual purchase anywhere.marqs wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2024 5:31 amhttps://newhavendisplay.com/2x20-charac ... ed-module/

Edit 2: Here's a yellow version of the same Newhaven display, which I guess might be closer to the amber of the Raystar/Winstar dsiplays (note that Newhaven only have a handful in stock since they've been discontinued):
https://newhavendisplay.com/2x20-charac ... ed-module/
I imagine that a red display would look pretty amazing though on the OSSC Pro.
Original reply:
Just wanted to point out that the Newhaven display has a different style font (and possibly a different color) than the Raystar/Winstar displays used originally, but the latter don't seem to be available for individual purchase anywhere, only sold directly to OEMs. So the display won't look the exact same – maybe SGGG2 could swap displays with someone who wants a white display in their 1st batch OSSC Pro?
It's a bit of a shame the Raystar and Winstar displays aren't available because I too would have loved an amber display. There's a retro vibe to that.
Re: OSSC Pro
There's no need to replace the display, I bought a pack of lighting gels, cut a red sheet to size, and stuck it in between the LCD and display shield. It looks almost identical

Some VERY early impressions:
Case is nice.
No analog audio out is a bit of a bummer.
Remote is surprisingly great, wish it was black.
The OSD is a LOT more responsive than the original OSSC.
There's a lot more to the OSD on the Pro, so it will take a while to learn everything.
The front panel is extremely helpful and looks great.
Adaptive mode (720p, 1080p) works with a Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4k, the original OSSC did not work at all.
The 352 Saturn preset looks amazing, it might even be too good, I think I prefer generic 4:3 with no phase adjustments, it has a softer, more natural look.
Saturn shows a ton of interference in grays, this wasn't the case on my OSSC/DSC-301 set up.
"Noninterlaced restore" on 1080i from a PS2 (via GSM) looks almost as good as motion adaptive deinterlacing if you can't spare the frame. It's a bit jittery in comparison. So far I still prefer to use the DSC for 1080i over any of the options here. EDIT: Results for Noninterlace are title dependent.

Re: OSSC Pro
If you feel that GS Sharp scaling is too sharp in Scaler mode, I have made two variants of MISTer format custom filters that I use on my OSSC Pro. You can just copy each into a text file and save it as scaler1.txt or scaler2.txt on a microSD card.
First off, a semi-soft filter that is 25% nearest-neighbor and 75% sinusoidal. This gives a slightly softer an image than GS Sharp and is what I use with optimized modes for 240p/288p/480i/576i games.
Second, a fully sinusoidal filter giving a yet softer image. This is more useful for 480p/576p games and above.
You can also download any 64-phase MISTer filter and use that, although you can't have separate filters for horizontal and vertical scaling like on the MISTer. I'm hoping that feature might be added to the OSSC Pro at some point since it would be helpful in making generic modes look smoother and more CRT-like, as well as allow for vertical filters with integrated scanlines.

Re: OSSC Pro
I was referring to adaptive mode, but don't hesitate to share anything here.
Marqs, please restore "480i interlaced line 3x Passthrough" to Pure Mode. I realize compatibility is low, but using the Extron DSC-301 for deinterlacing this is hands down the best alternative I've found for PS2 games that can't be forced into 1080i with GSM.
EDIT: It's there I misread it.

Re: OSSC Pro
I had a feeling you were talking about A-LM. I'm personally pretty obsessed with Scaler mode, since it lets me completely trim away any underscan when using polyphase scaling. I find the one field delay to be worth it.
Re: OSSC Pro
I just received the OSSC pro today and am amazed so far with its PRO CRT compatibility and appreciate the default of integer modes allowing me test scanline settings properly on 31khz up to 1280x1024 37” CRT.
I have lots of questions but will save them for next week after reading the quick start and discovering display modes myself.
One question thats probably been asked. Are you planning on making a DAC analog output expansion for EXP port?
The current batch of DAC are so hit and miss from China. I hardly ever get the same one twice and its black range and jitter ruin the experience for me when it happens.
Mostly just wanted to say thanks @marqs and Matt B for the quick and careful shipment.

A couple of small defaults do need to be changed to be able to use the features of the PRO on a CRT.
No Audio passthrough so you need to set the 3.5 to audio out instead of input. and Scaler mode will not work on most CRT or PC monitors by default as its set at 1080p if I remember off the top of my head? I had to set the scaler mode to output in an acceptable range to be able to hook up my mini consoles 1280x1024. It was a reasonable path after reading the PDF manual and Junker wiki but I thought the Scaler function was broken before education. Pure and AL are set to a lower output resolution by default so just a heads up for users using monitors under 1080p.
One thing I could not figure out is how to move the OSD from the far left of the screen. It displays outside my gaming boundary and I couldn't find a simple fix lol.
One other feature I have yet to dip my toes into is screen filters. So far the basic custom scanline functions control my horizontal and vertical but I would like to see more features akin to modern FPGA such as dot pixel and CRT masks. I'm not sure if this has been addressed in the last 70 pages but I'm throwing it out there.
I cant wait to test it scale features hooked up to a Super Gameboy.
So far I'm blown away and can only imagine the black crush will be much better than my Tendak when the DAC EXP arrives

The case is still plastic (ABS?), but the black ones are injection moulded instead of 3D printed. While not metal, it is good quality.

Re: OSSC Pro
I'm enjoying the CRT modes myself, for my projector that accepts only up to 1080i, but looks exceptionally beautiful using 1280x960 & 1024x768.
While you can't move the OSD display separately, you can use Scaler Opt.'s "Adv. timing"->"Size / crop" to zoom out on the picture and remove the overscan. After doing that, I return to "Adv. timing" and then go to "Position" to center it as best I can (but my projector auto-realigns when it resyncs so centering is a bit hit and miss on subsequent boots).
They may be found in "Post-proc."->"Shadow mask", in case you haven't noticed it yet.Hoagtech wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2024 6:44 pm One other feature I have yet to dip my toes into is screen filters. Will inverse telecine (for 30fps games) be added for interlaced modes in the future?
Re: OSSC Pro
There's some 30fps PS2 games where 2:2 pulldown works:

There's also some animation (like certain digital anime from the early 2000s or late 90's) done at 30fps.

Re: OSSC Pro
It would be nice to have for some PS2 games and GameCube games that don't work properly in 480p. Also, it would be nice to have an option to apply horizontal blending for phase. Some games/consoles don't really scale pixel-perfectly, so an adjustable phase blend would be nice to have. Also, will 16:9 be added for the HDMI line multiplier at some point?
Re: OSSC Pro
If cadendce detection/revesre pulldown is added, please let it be possible to disable and add control over the cadence detection mode used in case some content causes the deinterlacer to freak out.
Re: OSSC Pro
I've been thinking some more about how the scaling options could be extended to support more of the General Scaling filters to provide a range of filtering from sharp to soft without the ringing associated with Lanczos, provide separate scaling options for the horizontal and vertical axes, as well as how custom MISter filters could be managed.
This stems from a wish that more of the GS MISTer filters would be added to allow for a greater variety of smoothing, as well as extending the number of custom filters and letting those be freed up for special filters such as custom CRT and LCD emulation. Alas, I can't help implement features but I can join the age old tradition of sitting comfortably in my armchair and pointing arrogantly while others toil away by the sweat of their brow to make things reality.
Jokes aside, I do hope the following can help spark some more ideas on how things can be improved.
So here's what I've been thinking of so far.
The Scaling algorithm menu could be extended like this:
Aside from a Bilinear filter, GS medium and soft are added to give more options if a smoother result is desired than GS sharp gives. There are also two more options for customizing scaling; Advanced allows for different horizontal and vertical filters to be combined and fine tuned, and Custom replaces the existing Scaler1.txt and Scaler2.txt options. In the above example, it also lists the name of the currently loaded custom filter. Advanced scaling settings opens a submenu for setting up the Advanced scaling filter, and Load custom filter from SD Card opens a submenu with a list of filters stored on the SD card, allowing more slots for custom filters without making the Scaling algorithm menu too bloated.
The Advanced scaling settings could look something like this:
Here, prescale decides whether to apply an integer prescale and its factor (2-4x). Scl method selects the desired scaling method for the axis, from a subset of methods that combine well. Scl strength selects how sharp or soft the filter should be in a reasonable number of steps, by loading in an appropriate set of predefined coefficients.
Also, a horizontal lowpass FIR filter is added in case the user wants to further soften the picture. Filter response selects the windowing of the filter from a handful of options. Filter width specifies how wide the filter kernel should be. Filter strength decides how much the filtered result should be blended with the original signal. If implemented, maybe this should live in another menu. However, restricting it to the Advanced scaling mode and putting its settings into the Advanced scaling menu might help reduce confusion about what is affecting the picture.
For selecting custom MISTer filters, the menu could look something like this:
The user would add the desired filters to a custom folder, giving each a prefix and number to help the OSSC Pro sort them (e.g. Scaler_01_). Filters with separate horizontal and vertical coefficient sets would be given the suffix _H and _V and recognized as being part of the same filter (e.g. Scaler_01_Color_LCD_H and Scaler_01_Color_LCD_V). The number of slots to which the user could add custom filters would be as many as is reasonable.
Another useful feature in Scaler mode would be a polyphase scanline renderer. This would simply generate a list of coefficients with which the scaler coefficients could be multiplied to generate a new list used by the scaler. However, that simple approach would not work if prescaling is used. Then it would instead need to use the traditional scanline method after prescaling and before polyphase scaling, or multiply each output pixel separately by the polyphase scanline list when the prescaled image is scaled further by the polyphase scaling.
Code: Select all

--------------------------------
Auto

Lanczos3 sharp
Lanczos3&3 sharp

<Load custom filter from SD card>
The Advanced scaling settings could look something like this:
Code: Select all

H. prescale On (2x)
H. scl method GS
H. scl strength 5
V. prescale Off
V. scl method GS
V. scl strength 7
Low pass On
Filter response Smooth
Filter width 10
Filter strength 3
Also, a horizontal lowpass FIR filter is added in case the user wants to further soften the picture. Filter response selects the windowing of the filter from a handful of options. Filter width specifies how wide the filter kernel should be. Filter strength decides how much the filtered result should be blended with the original signal. If implemented, maybe this should live in another menu. However, restricting it to the Advanced scaling mode and putting its settings into the Advanced scaling menu might help reduce confusion about what is affecting the picture.
For selecting custom MISTer filters, the menu could look something like this:
Code: Select all
Load custom filter from SD
--------------------------------
01 Color_LCD
02 Sharp_bilinear
•03 Scanlines_50
04 <empty>
05 <empty>
06 <empty>
07 <empty>
08 <empty>
09 <empty>
10 <empty>
11 <empty>
12 <empty>
13 <empty>
14 <empty>
15 <empty>
16 <empty>
Another useful feature in Scaler mode would be a polyphase scanline renderer. This would simply generate a list of coefficients with which the scaler coefficients could be multiplied to generate a new list used by the scaler. However, that simple approach would not work if prescaling is used. Then it would instead need to use the traditional scanline method after prescaling and before polyphase scaling, or multiply each output pixel separately by the polyphase scanline list when the prescaled image is scaled further by the polyphase scaling.
Re: OSSC Pro
Don't forget that edge-adaptive scaling is also supported so one filter could consist of 2 sets of coefficients (for edge and non-edge content), or 4 if different H and V coefficients are also embedded in the same preset. Probably most straighforward way is to keep all them separate and individually selectable under some advanced option as you proposed.Zacabeb wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2024 9:04 pm I've been thinking some more about how the scaling options could be extended to support more of the General Scaling filters to provide a range of filtering from sharp to soft without the ringing associated with Lanczos, provide separate scaling options for the horizontal and vertical axes, as well as how custom MISter filters could be managed.
Re: OSSC Pro
That's a good point. One thing that could remain useful though is to have predefined filters that can be shared easily with all the necessary coefficients bundled. But there's probably no perfect solution.marqs wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 6:51 amDon't forget that edge-adaptive scaling is also supported so one filter could consist of 2 sets of coefficients (for edge and non-edge content), or 4 if different H and V coefficients are also embedded in the same preset. Having played around a bit more with the GS filters, I think that not only would the Medium (GS_Sharpness_070) and Soft (GS_Sharpness_055) be good additions to the default filters, but also an even softer one such as (GS_Sharpness_030) "GS Softer?" After having hooked up my Dreamcast over VGA and playing Crazy Taxi I was surprised at how much softening the image could take because of the aliasing and high contrast.
Speaking of edge adaptive filters, might it be possible with the Intel Scaler II core's edge adaptive scaling to create something akin to pixel smoothing?
Re: OSSC Pro
Is a "4x upsample" (up from 2 on the original OSSC) mode feasible for 480p sources?
Re: OSSC Pro
Is there any idea of when the next batch will be available? I didn't see that last batch was available and missed out. I'm itching to buy it ASAP!
Re: OSSC Pro
Maximum width of line/frame buffer is currently set to 2048. Generic mode for 480p is able to sample 1920 active which is already quite high oversampling.
Around 1.5-2 months if all goes well.
Re: OSSC Pro
Ah dang, going to be rough to wait even longer. If at all possible I would like to pre-order one if that option is available

Re: OSSC Pro
Hey i was wondering about this for a while but how do you know you can get the input lag to under a frame in scaler mode if it hasnt been done yet? And if its in the works what is an ETA for that feature?
