And yet it's quite common. See Metal Slug 2 Turbo, which system11 paid for and many people have benefited from. You want the work done badly enough, you pay for it. Simple business.
I know nothing of the homebrew scene. I don't own anything homebrew and I haven't mingled with people who do homebrew projects.
I don't mind paying for work, but considering I want a cartridge, with a label, in a box with new controls. Err, I think thats gonna cost a lot. Plus before I pay anyone for work, I'd like to know what I'm paying for. If I paid £100 for 2 minutes work i'd not feel I got a good deal. So I guess I need to learn about what I'm asking for before I can value the work itself.
It would indeed be a service and the notion of 'fair' hardly matters. as I said, if it was something I felt I wanted to do for the fun of it or if I could learn something useful then I would be more inclined to offer it up for free to the world. But, as I said, I have no real personal interest in that title but you do.
If you want the full works, then that is a different topic: you asked for a modification to the game's original code. Packaging etc. is another topic entirely but it would be perverse for you to make all the packaging and not have the type of mods to the ROM so which is more crucial to have?
Purely speculative on your part: I did not give any indication (I have no idea right now) as to how much work it would be nor how much would be 'fair' to charge. You did, however, ask for someone to do the work and I said I could do it if there was interest and backing for it. We are not talking "2 mins work" here.
As Trap said : happens all the time, sometimes for fun, interest, education and sometimes simply for $. You alone have to decide how much it is worth to you.
I cannot draw pixels if my life depended on it, so what I do is ask someone else to do it for me, someone who is willing to accept payment in exchange for an asset that I myself cannot create.
Also, as a matter of respect here: just keep in mind that some people have spent quite a bit of time learning how to handle these types of situations and problems. You are paying for a service that you yourself either cannot provide or it would take too long for you to come up with a solution yourself. I gather you work in Software/IT so you should be familiar with people paying for software. This is the same.
For anyone who is interested: I have never released any of my ROM mods largely because they were only meant to serve a given purpose and would not be useful to most people.
