Do cyber cafes still exist in Paris, France?
Quick question for french users of this forum:
I'm writing a story that takes place in Paris, France, and I need a public place where the protagonist would be using a USB thumb drive.

Do cyber cafes still exist in Paris?
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

There aren't tons of them, only a few surviving probably thanks to other services/themes they offer.

The protagonist is going to be a tourist, BTW.

You know, kind of a tea salon with computers, or combined with laundraumat, art gallery, whatever, maybe simply loccated in a very hip/expensive street and shit.Mischief Maker wrote:Like what other services/themes?Xyga wrote:There aren't tons of them, only a few surviving probably thanks to other services/themes they offer.

Because making people pay several € just for a few minutes/couple hours internet connexion today is just no-no.
There are still some around which offer that, but their primary business is often 'international call shop' (forgot the proper term), in districs inhabited by diasporas like arabs, chinese etc.
EDIT: oh yeah and the 24/7 gaming/surfing/printing formula exists too, like the 'Milk', but most still close sometime in the evening, typically those that focus more on internet + office work services.

Why not use a public library or university's computer lab?

We used to have a Cyber Cafe/Laundromat/Bar here in downtown Madison but it died a death, mostly because it wasn't close to that many apartments and trekking there would require lugging your dirty laundry down several blocks of state street.
I'm thinking more in terms of the character wandering the street, seeing the sign, and then getting the idea to go in, rather than something he determinedly seeks out.Bitter Almonds wrote:Why not use a public library or university's computer lab?

They're called "taxiphone". Google it, you'll see what they look like.Xyga wrote:

It would be cool if there were places with uber-gaming-PCs and gigabit internet connections but since you need accounts to play things nowadays I could see where security could be an issue.

Late response
I've been trying to get into writing, or find someone who's decent at it, lately for some game projects I've been working on.
I've always gotten good marks on my writing, but I've only ever done essays, research papers, and such. I've never tried writing a script or setting a scene, so I fear that I have little ability to do so.
Been thinking of trying to find someone to either write a script for me, co-write it, or at least give me some tips that I can use to practice. Let me know if ever interested.
