Dead white PC-Engine?

Post by tcancian »

Took my PC-Engine out of storage to use it on my to be RGB-modded IFU and it's totally dead. I had tried to do a RGB mod a while ago but when I gave up I tested the console and it was outputting composite through the IFU just fine, so I packed it for later modding. Had tried the THS7314 mod and it also gave me a black screen but there was sound and all, seemed working.

Now the screen blanks when I turn power on but no picture, no sound, and I removed the RF output so I can't test that either. The fuse looks OK, all capacitors are looking good, there are some solder blobs I had done on the EXT Bus but no big deal, the HuCard connectors look good and there's no difference if there's a HuCard or not, tried cleaning the contacts and the ICs with isopropyl alcohol and no change.

Damn, I had a Turbo Everdrive in storage just waiting for this machine to be RGB modded. Heard the White PCEs were supposed to be very durable so how come it died on me while on storage?

Any ideas? I'm at a loss on how to fix this and apparently not many people had their white PCEs dying on them like this.

Could be anything. First thing to try is take a multimeter to the voltage regulator's input and output legs to see whether it is doing its job or not. After that things get a lot more technical.

Even though the fuse looks OK it's best to check it with a multimeter just to confirm. Then I would go on to check the input and output of the voltage regulator just to confirm that the machine is receiving power.

Is the psu confirmed to be working?

Found the regulator, I'll have a check at it once I find my multimeter, it went AWOL since I last moved things around.

I'll also have a check on the fuse but I find it intriguing that it stopped working while on storage. I think the IFU could also be faulty but it has just so many components on the IFU, I don't even know where to start, I'm considering soldering back the RF modulator to the PC-Engine and try to use a RF signal to test. Is there a way I can know if any of the CPU/VPU ICs are dead? The Hu6xxx chips. The thing is I only have three Hucards: Bomberman, Turbo Everdrive and a System Card 3.0. I'll also try the SC3.0 once I find the multimeter and solder back the RF, maybe the Bomberman Hucard died for some odd reason?

Thanks for the replies kamiboy and tribal_war. :D

If I don't get to fix this unit I'll likely end up retr0brighting the case and using it to house a RaspberryPi2 running EmulationStation, I've read PCE-CD emulation is fullspeed on the RPI2, and I think raphnet PCE to USB adapter board works out of the box and there's also some VGA adapters I could use to output 640x480. I own an Emotia and I can then get the resolution back to 240p. It would be a robust solution to play CD-based games and Hucard images alike but I want to make sure the console is dead before going through with the mod.
