From Software 'n such
Re: From Software 'n such
Ha. All I mean by this is the environmental challenges are so compelling, that entering a huge arena and having to plough through a straightforward war of attrition is a bit disarming. Mainly I'm thinking about bosses like Bed Of Chaos (I think) and the tree git from 3. My favourite Souls boss is probably one of the ones I inexplicably had most issues with; the armour from three which took me 8 goes.
But anyway. Do you not feel that the bosses just aren't as 'integrated' as other challenges? That they demonstrate a break in the gameplay, and usually a roadblock. It would be nice if there was a 'scenic route' to bypass them, to facilitate immersion. I understand this is a ridiculous thing to take issue with...

yeah i love you man but you don't 'alf say some shit.
I WANT the buildup to the huge fucking badass behind the fog door.
It's not a break in the gameplay.
you could also call it a "break in the gameplay" if I walk 5 steps without having to stab something.

Re: From Software 'n such
Yeah, I kinda hear ya on that. I much more prefer the exploration and the small challenges and usually dread the bosses myself. I've gotten more used to them, having recently finally tackled Dark Souls and partway through Bloodborne right now as well, but when I come across one I kind of get disappointed!
That's kinda why I might enjoy King's Field a bit more in that regard, as it feels more like an adventure without the boss breaks and the stress that can come with it; it's a much more leisurely experience for me. Or maybe I just really hate the lamp/bonfire runs back to the boss after I fail, because all I think about is time and how I spend it... HMMMMM.
I'm sitting here now and possibly having an identity crisis. I think I hate bosses, and by extension hate myself. I guess I'm okay with that, but also looking forward to more Bloodborne this weekend. Currently in snake woods and I hate those snakeman wankers.

In my defence I grew up playing TRPGs, where it's about kicking one door in at a time, and I guess this is why bosses get in the way of the crawlin'. Also Drauch, I'm completely with you on the stress aspect. I get get stressed out too easily, even if it's just the CONCEPT of a boss fight as opposed to the actual challenge it poses that does so.
I'm currently gunning for a 1cc on Ketsui and theoretically
am very close but again the stages are way more fun than the bosses. Please don't hate me :'(

Re: From Software 'n such
I get it... A lot of soulsborne bosses really aren't that great, and some times elements of them can be annoying, or they can rely on mechanics that might be easier for some players than others, forming a bit of a roadblock, occasionally bigger than intended.
That said, a lot of them are great. Even Bloodborne which I felt had some of the blandest bosses of the series just wouldn't be the same without them. I think "dreading the bosses" is a big part of the atmosphere, and running into this huge thing you're almost guaranteed to be punished by immediately when you don't know what to expect is always incredibly effective for world building.
Most of the games I think find a nice balance, where the bosses are eventually easy to overcome when you get to learn them, and some feel really truly great to fight and finally beat.
Sekiro, however, definitely goes overboard with its bosses every other minute, and mostly forgettable treks inbetween them. And then repeating most of them once or four times again after that.
Honestly, out of all of these games, I think Nioh had the best bosses. How about that, From :O

(haven't actually played Nioh yet, just assuming the general internet stance of cool game but overused content and repetitive.)
Again, you made the minibosses in Sekiro a much bigger deal than they actually are by spending most of your game refusing to engage with them.
In other news, some people die to intricate patterns in shmups.I get it... I've absolutely loved the bosses in Bloodborne for the most part, but I also ADORE the theme/setting so that probably makes me a bit biased.
Personal ratings for me that have nothing to do with gameplay and everything to do with flavor and lore.
Vicar Amelia 9/10
Cleric Beast 7/10
Blood Starved Beast 8/10
Darkbeast Paarl 8/10
Father Gascoigne 9/10
The Great Ones all look freaking amazing and I can't wait to take them down.
I wanted Nioh to be good because of the setting but I couldn't get into it.
I'm holding out hope for Ghost of Tsushima as I have generally been okay with Sucker Punch.

It's alright. I liked seeing another approach to the phalanx boss archetype tbh.Illyrian wrote: What about Rom the Cancer Spider? Absolutely hate that fight so much. It's so dumb.
spoilers for tactics as steamflogger hasn't fought it yet
Spoiler
Also just unlock, dodge a few spiddies, hit em in the ass so they go down easy..
2nd and 3rd forms stand close enough to the bitch so she does the AoE or the upwards spell/ not the missiles.
If the spiddies are dead bait out her thrashing then punish.

I just think Rom is either over very quickly, but this requires luck and expendable items that aren't easily replaced in the early game. Or it takes like...10 minutes during which 1 errant hit can kill you wasting all that time. It really is a crap fight in my opinion.
Same reason I can't be bothered with the hit and run tactics you can use on bosses in Sekiro, it just takes too bloody long.

Re: From Software 'n such
Pffft. I swear with decent mid-game damage which you should have by now you can just stick close to Rom and don't have to take out all the minions first. The fight does allow you to be a bit cheeky like this. No consumables required.
Hmm I'm not sure which ending to go for on my Sekiro NG+
Won't be shura.

Re: From Software 'n such
So I took down Rom fairly quickly. At first I was trying to be too aggro. Once I slowed down and took the time to clear out the smaller spiders first it was a breeze. Good thing too, because that fight was physically painful for me as I have major arachnophobia. Rom was w/e but the minion spiders were freaking me out.
Martyr Logarius is a real mf'er, that's for sure. I almost had him last night but it was really late at that point and I derped hard when I basically had him locked up (maybe 4-5 hits from death and I had plenty of health and blood vials to play with).
I just realized I should probably do the DLC soon.

Re: From Software 'n such
Managed to beat blood starved beast third time. Felt like I was cheating because I summoned an NPC (never done that in a souls game and have always played offline) and he just went down like a sack of shit. Now pissing around in the next improbable Church location. Never got this far on my last playthough. It's good stuff. The iconography of Sekiro just leaves me cold (maybe I'm a reverse weeaboo) but Bloodbourne just looks like how I wanted my house to look like when I was a teenage goth. Need to get hold of some weeping women statues for the garden at some point.
Re: From Software 'n such
BSB was my big difficulty hump. I tried a few NPC summons and it didn't help, then tackled him on my own just by dodging left. Once I cleared him everyone else has been pretty easy, but I'm also not afraid to summon NPCs if I've got 'em. I ain't got nothin' to prove and gladly accept all judgement, 'cause I'm also in this for the goth vibes. The only statue I have in my backyard is a snail, but it's pretty evil looking.

Re: From Software 'n such
Bloodbourne seems to have loads more NPC summons than the three souls games I played before this. I have no issues with using them, especially as I've accrued about 12 insight and just as many madman's knowledge things.
Got caught by a spooky bagman and got chucked in gaol for a bit. Died a few times, found a boss, killed some cute pigs, got out. Just got blitzed by Vicar Amelia, who seems to be a big step up in difficulty. I seem to be exploring about three places at once and have no idea what I'm doing. Great stuff!

Re: From Software 'n such
Yeah, I've noticed a lot more NPCs in this as well, although a handful have been pretty worthless. They're in the game, so I feel no shame! Really, the only one I felt that helped a lot was against the Shadows.
Since I'm also in this for the first time, my Amelia strategy was just sticking behind her as much as I could and using the flame paper. Went down pretty easy that way.

On my phone atm, can't post the real justice.. so i will be terse..
Summoning NPC or human alike is puss plays and should be subject to karmaic punishment!
Ez mode. Almost as bad as credit feeding and saying you beat the game.
Gentlemen, i am disappoint.
I did not think today would be the resurgence of puss plays!
Amelia was tough for me but I didn't know about grabbing some twin shards from gaol and hemwick first back then.
BSB first time gang.

Re: From Software 'n such
I will NEVER summon an NPC but I'm also not gonna judge the people that do.
I churned through a lot of the first big DLC area then went back and pretty much smoked Logarius. Had two claw runes equipped and I'm using LHB + 9 with all gems doing at least 12% boost (over 500 power pretty easily idk the exact figure w/o looking) and it was super satisfying to see how much he took from visceral attacks.
Ludwig is an aggressive mf'er. This fight is gonna be a hoot. Going to need to use some fire paper, I imagine.
Edit: This game is a masterpiece btw. One of the few 10s I've ever given out.

I killed her at a hilariously low level with a weak weapon. Hence my bullet sponge comment. She's actually reaaaaally easy when you think about it. To me the BSB was more annoying but I did beat it with the same gear. You really gotta pick your spots especially when you trigger the 2nd phase.Blinge wrote:Amelia was tough for me but I didn't know about grabbing some twin shards from gaol and hemwick first back then.

Uh oh Steamflog, are you initiating a passive aggressive "i done that boss easy" war?? Or did i...
My friend and I always do that and it's pathetic
Btw the dlc is endgame stuff! Meant to say earlier.

Re: From Software 'n such
Definitely not my intention. I was being dumb on that fight a little bit until it fully clicked then I basically didn't get hit. Definitely would have been much easier if I totally jacked up a weapon first is all though.
I'm assuming the DLC is like DS and once you beat the game that's it and it rolls into NG. I suppose I could do more regular game and then get to it right before Gehrman & MP but I haven't been brick walled yet. I did think to myself "damn this is a biiig boi difficulty spike" though. Definitely had to adjust and get the patterns down for stuff in the Nightmare.

Re: From Software 'n such
Yeah pretty much. Gehrman or MP dying = NG+, you don't get asked.
it's a shame you know stuff from so far ahead!
I think my problem with Amelia was this. I was just doing my hardbaked dark souls 2 strats of dodging at 11 o'clock, no matter what she did.
She has a back up move that hits, and seemingly always followed by a 'random' attack afterwards. It took me way too long to cotton on to that.

Re: From Software 'n such
A friend mentioned the true final boss is missable, so I looked up the info pertaining to that. I've got it locked in at this point more or less .
Oh and if you are good enough you can use any weapon, preferences yadda yadda but my thought is that LHB is probably the best single player weapon in the game. Damage gets really big due to medium modifiers across three stats and it does w/e job you want it to. Fast when you need it (unsheathed) and devastating/disrupting af as a great sword. I really love the style of the cane and whirligig saw though, just for the lulz really.
Spoiler
just have to kill the baby when the time comes

The one you get from killing the baby if you save Arianna and send her to the chapel and the one from Iosefka you can miss if you go there and kill her too early.

I just shrieked so loud at the spiders in Nightmare of Mensis that one of my cats ran over to check on me.
Edit: Got that aforementioned item, and the boss that drops another is the next boss so that will be the third one. Mission accomplished barring some weird bug.
