So, uh, there's a new Nick Cave album out, a Bad Seeds one, and apparently there's a really good movie about the production of it, that everyone is raving about. And I never heard about this at all until today.

It's very good though! I really haven't been too much into anything he made since probably Murder Ballads, but this one I really like.

Reliving my childhood by listening to the first 2 Foo Fighters albums. They were solid up until 1x1 and have been hit and miss since then.

Bolt-Thrower's 4th Crusade from 1992.

I've been listening to a lot of Megadeth's Rust in Peace. A little bit of Countdown to Extinction, on the side.

Was hammering Peace Sells and Rust yesterday afternoon, and reflecting on both Gar Samuelson and Nick Menza being gone so early. 3;

Killer lineups, killer albums. If you've not seen/heard it, the 1992 Hammersmith Odeon film is on Youtube in full and it is face-meltingly intense. I like its version of "Ashes In Your Mouth" better than the album cut.

Disturbed - The Sickness. Probably one of the best albums I've ever heard.

They were on fire back then, the lineup of Mustaine, Menza, Ellefson and Friedman were unstoppable! I've met Marty Friedman a couple times, he's a pretty nice guy (if not completely socially reclusive lol), and a pretty huge inspiration for me as a guitar player.

To keep the thread going, right now I'm listening to Racer X - Lucifer's Hammer

A bit predictable, and not really metal per se, but I've gone with The Downward Spiral's instrumental version for DOOM and Quake (perhaps editing out "Piggy" and "Closer," definitely "Hurt" imo; "Ruiner" isn't available in instrumental unfortunately, but the cover of Joy Division's Dead Souls works great in its stead). Not sure how available it is... AFAIK it was on the official NIN website at one point, I found it in a random torrent. One time "Heresy"'s big beefy intro came on near-synced to a Brutal DOOM E1M2 shotgun decapitation orgy and it was most memorable!

Ministry and Skinny Puppy's more conventionally heavy early/mid-90s albums work great too, very much the sound Reznor was cribbing for TDS. Vintage id ultraviolence is synonymous with mildly commercialised industrial, IMO. The knowingly OTT hellmurder and techno/occult styling benefit from a bit of electro grime and punishing riddim.

I'll have to defer to others for the truer \m/etal recs; bit of a filthy casual on the musical front meself, though I do like what I like. ;3

Very cool. I always had the impression Friedman was a bit on the quieter side by rockstar metal guitar god standards, haha.

The combination of shatteringly violent texture and clockwork efficiency does quite complement Knee Deep In The Dead's classic *Click* *BOOM* "ROWRRR!" rhythm. ^__^

The Beach Boys - The Smile Sessions
What a strange album this really is. I've not heard the Smile album from 2004, but this sure is strange and good all in one package!

King Diamond - Fatal Portrait

I've been a huge fan of King and his guitar player Andy LaRocque for about 10-15 years now but I've never really given this album enough attention. I've always gone straight to Abigail, Them, Conspiracy, the Eye, or even the Graveyard or Spider's Lullabye. I'm pleasantly surprised at how good Fatal Portrait is, I wouldn't say it is as amazing as Abigail or anything....but I feel like I might have been missing out by passing it by all this time.

I really wish Andy LaRocque would film some sort of guitar instructional video. I'd buy it in a heartbeat, and I've always wanted an inside look at his playing, equipment, style, and approach when it comes to writing/composing/recording/engineering a record/etc. Criminally under-rated yet absolutely fantastic guitar player!

I will give Fatal Portrait a spin.

I'm more of a Mercyful Fate guy, but I do fancy some King Diamond every now and then. I mostly go with Abigail when I do.

Recent discussion of Bare Knuckle III's vital but limited OST inspired me to revisit the hardest, gayest EBM I know of in Nitzer Ebb's debut LP That Total Age. Next time I'm throwing down with the scrubs I'm just gonna link 'em to these guys instead.

I was calling you out for being a jackass in another thread. Clearly you learned little while you were away. I'm not going to shit up this thread anymore, but realize you're not much better than you were.

I was directing that toward the guy who wrote that article, not Durandal.

Are you absolutely sure that's the gayest EBM you can think of?

I like The Sickness in a nostalgic "Oh God, I can't believe I used to dig this kind of shit when I was younger" kind of way, much like Papa Roach's first album and Hybrid Theory. Don't sweat it though mate, we're all young once, enjoy it and then look back and laugh like everyone else does. I used to do stupid shit like draw the Donnie Darko numbers on my arm before going out to the local indie bar.

Today, as an older, wiser man of increasing sophistication, I am enjoying the soothing smokey tones of the late Nat King Cole, singing his hits, with a glass of wine and a plate of cheese on the side.
