A few months ago my friends, Elabit, Owlnonymous and I set up the gameroom for Metrocon. An anime convention in Tampa FL. We had set up about 12-14 RGB CRT monitors and 3 candy cabs. Were were having an awesome time watching people enjoy all the great games we brought. On the second day something amazing happened.

Elabit and I were fixing the Neo Geo another friend of mine brought when Elabit said "I can fix the stick man, why don't you talk to that girl playing your tate setup?" I turned my head and saw her. The most beautiful girl I had ever laid eyes on. Her pale skin illuminated only by the glow of pink bullets on an PVM RGB monitor.

She noticed me working on some of the setups and asked if the setup she was playing on was mine. I told her my friends and I set everything up. She was playing Neo XYX on the dreamcast and told me she liked it allot. I then went on to explain how much I loved shooting games.
She then replied "Ya I love shmups, have you played Darius Alpha?" IN THAT MOMENT MY HEART SKIPPED A BEAT.

I felt that sinking feeling you experience when missing a medal in Batrider or dropping a chain in Dodonpachi. I surely had to be dreaming.
was all of this real? did my friends pay this girl to say this to me? I told her no I couldn't afford that game.

The last day she returned. out of now where she ran up to me and very nervously handed me her cell phone. She asked if I could type the name of the developer who made Neo XYX so she could buy a copy.
I simply typed the name of the developer and handed her phone back.
She looked at it briefly and disappointment was written on her face. She left down the convention hall like an anime ship pilot headed towards her ship in a shmup intro. I never saw her again. For a moment I almost ran after her realizing the mistake I made. I know she is out there... Somewhere. piloting her ship.

As sweet as I find this love-bitten infatuation with any gaming nerd who happens to spot a female in the vicinity of games wot they play - this kind of instant 'cool' by virtue of association (I know, I've felt it) is a little lonely.
I think it's a case of "So I don't actually need to step out of my protective hobbyist womb to encounter these creatures? What luck! I must chart these events forthwith! Mount the harpoon!"

I've yet to meet a girl that plays video-games regularly and doesn't have some sort of weird-ass psychological issues or some other really awkward social abilities or understanding how the world works. Please don't get your hopes up too much- the only thing you know about her is that she /might/ play a lot of shmups.

I've met (both irl and internet) quite a few girls who play games, so I wouldn't say they're that rare (though that depends on how "regularly" you mean).

But yeah, I totally agree. Her other hobbies could include torching orphanages and torturing puppies for all you know. Don't think someone's cool just because they have good taste.

I agree with this, theres got to be more than gaming there for a relationship to be successful, and you need to be willing to be proactive and try things outside of your own limited interests and hobbies. Waiting around and jumping at any girl within 5 feet of an arcade stick probably isn't a good strategy.

That said, the cynicism in here about gamer girls seems pretty extreme to me. As it turns out, I met my own current long term girlfriend via shmups forum when I was trying to set up a TGS group last year. I was casually dating two other girls at the time, so I definitely wasn't just jumping at her because she was my only option as a gamer. She's just legitimately cool to be around. Definitely no "weird-ass psychological issues or some other really awkward social abilities or understanding how the world works". If those are the only kind of gamer girls you've ever met, then you are hanging out with the wrong kind of gamers. I've met plenty of other girls who game and also have successful careers and varied hobbies and interests. Hell to be honest, I've met a way higher percentage of socially awkward weeaboos among the male gaming population than I have among the female gamers I've met.

I don't want to sound like an SJW (I'm definitely not), but it depresses me to see this kind of sexism on an enlightened forum such as shmups, even if it isn't really intentional.
