Looks like Varth was released in July 1992 as well, at least according to the always-accurate Wikipedia.

Re: July 1992, Japan
As with the cool 4-in-1 TTI games compliation of Gates of Thunder (along with Bonk, Bonk's Revenge and the hidden game of Bomberman as well) bundled together with all Turbo Duos sold in the USA back in October of 1992, there's a hidden Easter Egg code that unlocks the JPN version of GoT to play straight from the main title -- TTI simply chose not to have Japanese language script shown on the main title screen is the only "minor" difference between the original PCE version of GoT and the TTI version of GoT (everything else in terms of gameplay and game mechanics remains the same as usual).
Unfortunately, I was able to pull this off just once but couldn't remember just exactly what various random D-pad inputs and button presses were entered to make it happen successfully. It's still do-able through "trial & error." I'm not even sure if TTI knew about this slick JPN GoT trick as well (as there was no publication/mention about it during the Turbo Duo's heyday or even in the Turbo Play/Duo World magazines for that matter).
So yes, the JPN version of GoT still does reside within the TTI release of GoT, indeed. Just gotta find the right inputs to pull it off (from what I do recall is, enter in the inputs during the initial opening intro and instead of the usual USA TTI version of GoT main title screen, it'll boot up to the JPN GoT at the main title screen prompts). However, upon doing a soft boot reset, it booted up to the TTI version of GoT.
