Yeah, I was quite suprised when I noticed that episode. And it's JonTron alright.
It was nice to see him actually liking many of the games and while I do enjoy his work, I did felt a bit letdown by the fact the last game had to be Cho Aniki - just a tad predictable that's all

Re: Jontron on shmups!
Big Jontron fan here, didn't care too much for this episode. The focus was less on showing off good shmups and more on showing off wacky Japanese games. Then again, he did like them for the gameplay, and Jontron has mainly been about looking at more "out there" games. Honestly I think my enjoyment of the episode was kind of diminished by the social justice war going on in the comments.

Re: Jontron on shmups!
Wow the Touhou brigade are out in force, some puerile cunt says he's unsubscribed because there was no mention of Touhou. What a well balanced individual, guess i'd better push back the date I actually try a touhou game a few more months, wouldn't wanna become like that =]
Great exposure though, is this part of a larger trend? Surely there has to be some increase in shmups popularity after this; after all that exposure has reached thousands from Jontron alone.

The comments on this video are complete shit: tumblr social warriors, tryhard trolls, and 2hu fanatics. Usually jontron video comments are pretty decent.
But yeah, most Jontron videos get at least a million views, so plenty of exposure here. Unfortunately he only covered some of the most obscure shmups and didn't really get
into the shmups everyone here know and love.

To be fair, his focus on this ep wasn't really shmups in general, but the more "out there" games. He gave a good mention of a few series, but obviously didn't go into them in depth since they didn't really fit the theme of the episode.

A lot of good things has shitty fans. Shouldn't keep you from trying stuff and forming your own impression about games or other things.Blinge wrote: guess i'd better push back the date I actually try a touhou game a few more months, wouldn't wanna become like that =]
You don't need a reason to dodge things. http://www.liliumstg.blogspot.com/2015/ ... s-log.html
Re: Jontron on shmups!
It's time for Western internet comedy personalities to stop making fun of Cho Aniki. That ship sailed a decade ago, and even people who've never played a single one of the games know all the images by heart now.

Re: Jontron on shmups!
I agree with everyone, he wasn't really covering shmups seriously, but I can see he respects them. I found the episode really funny though, and it will surely set the curious on a journey to true shmups.

Agreed, just be careful that even than, you don't go in with any subconscious biases. You could go into something with the intention to give it a fair shot, but deep down you really don't want to end up liking it. Touhou's patterns are nowerdays some of my favorites in the genre, but for the longest time I just didn't want to like them because I was just so sick of having the franchise thrown in my face and hearing weebs go on and on about the music and story (lol). One day I just woke up and realized that in spite of all that shit, they're great fucking games.Lilium wrote:A lot of good things has shitty fans. Goes to show how nerdy some of these guys are though. They're so nerdy and annoying that they manage to alienate other nerds away from what they like on the internet.
Oh yeah: the Jontron video. I scrubbed the youtube playhead through the video and didn't see anything but a few cute em ups and Cho Aniki, so I closed the tab. Nothing against those games but come on, you don't call a video "Japanese Shmups" (which accounts for 99% of them) and than only showcase lolJapan games. Anyone who's remotely familiar with the genre is probably used to that shit already.

Or you could be like Jaimers, Erppo, Sapz, and the like.Blinge wrote:guess i'd better push back the date I actually try a touhou game a few more months, wouldn't wanna become like that =]

That, and Squire and Lilium made the point pretty well. The games are actually pretty good, if you look past the fanbase, as the actual games don't have any of that fanbase stuff in it, and yeah, you don't have to necessarily play them using a keyboard, if you wanted to play on something else that's not a keyboard. Me, I've always somehow avoided the fanbase (It's actually easier than you think), despite being around many where I live who could more closely fit the description Blinge and Squire are talking about, lol. I've always focused on the gameplay, as that is the relevant thing to discuss, STG-wise. The other stuff has little/no relevance on the gameplay (Well, okay, I do like to know the story of every game I play (Touhou and whatnot, you name it), characters and all, so I know a bit about what exactly am I playing besides gameplay), so I wouldn't much know about it, and even then, yeah, I wouldn't go around and, you know, do that kind of stuff.
As for the video, I'll watch it sometime. I'm not really into mainstream videos like these, since I usually like to find out about games myself in other ways.

Most of the touhou fanbase doesn't even play the games

Re: Jontron on shmups!
Yeah...I'm with PurpleTheGuy when it comes to avoiding the Touhou fanbase. It is surprisingly easy to avoid the fanbase if all you are doing is looking up the the main games (especially when you have people like Jaimers around). My advice would be to just try the demos from ZUN's website and form your opinions from there.
Probably one of the worst thing that could happen when you are introduced is believing its an anime (I've seen comments about that every now and then asking if its an anime). The sad part is that I can't blame those fans too much with groups such as IOSYS around.

They're bad ambassadors for the series though, that negative impression is > my curiosity. Aaand you just judged the whole video from its title. He explains in his introduction the whole point is to showcase some LolJapan shooters. I mean cmon, people don't watch this guy to learn more about games, it's for entertainment.Squire Grooktook wrote: Oh yeah: the Jontron video. Looks like I judged correctly then.Blinge wrote:Aaand you just judged the whole video from its title. He explains in his introduction the whole point is to showcase some LolJapan shooters.
The funny thing is, lolJapan stuff is way more inherently humorous itself than any of the cheap jokes made at its expense. Just pointing and laughing at wacky jp video games and shit is just super played out by now IMO.
The novelty of it is also somewhat lost when you're already deeply acquainted with the source material.

Congrats, I look forward to reading other reasons you didn't watch other videos.Squire Grooktook wrote: Looks like I judged correctly then.
It's quite obvious that he didn't make the video for people like yourself that know everything there is to know about shmups, so saying "it's not for me" based on those reasons seems entirely unnecessary. Your problem with the title is just simple pedantry.
I'm just glad of the exposure.

I muted this thing halfway into Harmful Park because this guy fucking sucks at acting. Is this what passes as "entertainment" nowadays? I don't have a problem with the title. The video just doesn't look entertaining, and seeing other peoples posts here only confirms that.Blinge wrote:Congrats, I look forward to reading other reasons you didn't watch other videos.Squire Grooktook wrote: Looks like I judged correctly then.

The exposure is nice, but he could have done a lot better. Maybe show off something on Steam that people might actually pay money for to support? Oh well, better than nothing I suppose.

Re: Jontron on shmups!
I like JonTron even if some of his videos are crap like his "reviews" on Sonic R (which while not so good, it's not as awful as some people talk about) and Star Fox Adventure (where he mainly bitches just because it's not a rail shooter like the older games but still it's great - if not perfect - Zelda-like game and one of the last, good games from Rare). His new episode about japanese shmups is nice and I'm glad that he appreaciates hidden gems like Harmful Park (one of my favourite shmups). And let's admit it: even for a Cho Aniki game, these one that was released on PSX was pretty fucked up. This is probably because of the digitilized graphics that made the homoerotic theme of the francise looks even more fucked up. As about Samurai Zombie Nation, Spoony One already made a great review about it, one of his few reviews which are actually hilarious:

Re: Jontron on shmups!
I found the video pretty amusing. Keio Flying Squadron had completely escaped my radar, and I'm surprised JonTron would be the one to introduce the game to me. Been playing it the last couple of weeks, definitely an under appreciated gem.
