Connecting a PC to a CRT

Post by 3DFruitBat »

Hey, everyone! I'm new here and totally psyched about it. I will now ask an incredibly newbish question: how do I connect my PC to my NTSC CRT TV?
The PC has an AMD Radeon HD 7790 with HDMI, and the CRT has only AV inputs. I've figured out that you can't just use a cable, so I'm looking for the right converter. All I need is a simple HDMI to AV and S-Video (for when I eventually upgrade my pretty poor Philips VHS combo).
I'll spend $30-50 on a nice, simple streamlined unit that'll last awhile. I just need to play some Dark Souls, Ikaruga, Space Giraffe, and other random stuff.
Thank you for any input you have.

Yikes, that's pretty silly of me! This TV uses RCA inputs. I would like to use S-Video in the future. Man, my old AGP video card had both. That was awesome, but that computer's kinda dead now.

Thanks for the welcome! I hope I can get up to speed quick and contribute interesting stuff.

You need an analogue output on your video card. Either VGA, DVI-I or Displayport. You buy a scan converter, connect the RGBHV output of your video card to it's input and from there you get composite, s-video, component and RGB in 15khz to feed your CRT. Check ebay and search for "Extron VSC" for real quality scan converters. There are a few VSC 500 units right now available for $50 (or best offer). That's a real steal.

You do realize it'll look like utter shit through composite, right?

Your CRT doesn't have component inputs? Might be time to search for a new one that someone's just giving away. What brand is yours?
