Saturn games with BAD YOKO modes?

Post by trickytree »

Hi,

I can't TATE my monitor, it's way too big! Therefore I have to play vertical shmups in YOKO mode. My question is this: Which Saturn shooters have good YOKO modes, and which are ugly/glitchy?

Examples of good YOKO modes (in my opinion):
Strikers 1945 1&2 (Full res, with attack patterns altered to compensate)

OK YOKO:
Donpachi/Dodonpachi (Interlacing isn't nice, but it's playable)

BAD YOKO:
Gunbird ('Wobble' mode = instant headache)

I'm particularly interested in how Batsugun, Shienryu and Sonic Wings Special are in YOKO, before I splash the cash on them.

Thanks!

I haven't played in yoko in awhile, but I recall Sonic Wings Special's yoko mode being pretty good, no major problems with it.

Thanks, can you remember whether Sonic Wings was full res, interlaced or wobble? As long as it wasn't wobble then I'm sure I'll be happy with it.

It definitely wasn't wobble, or at least there was a "non-wobble" option, like on Gunbird 2 on DC. Not sure about the resolution though, my eye isn't trained enough to catch that stuff too often.

I remember Layer Section being a sack of shit. Simply too much lost in translation for the game to play anything like the same. I'm not a purist or snob, but that's the first time lack of TATE really did screw a game for me.

Sonic Wings Special has both wobble mode and a mode where the upper and lower parts of the screen are just cut off. There's also that strange flickering interlace mode.

The Yoko mode of Donpachi I actually consider to be excellent, with all the screen scaling options and stuff.

Agreed on both good and bad re. Donpachi and Layer Section.

So Sonic Wings Special sounds as if it has the same modes as Strikers 1945 1&2, plus an additional interlaced mode. Should be fine then, thanks!

Anyone have any knowledge of Batsugun and Shienryu's vert modes?

Shienryu yoko mode is fine for me at least.

Its an interlaced mode, I think at every 4 lines , it misses one, so the entire playfield fits in the screen. It looks strange, but you get used to it with time. You miss in the graphics, but it plays superbly well..

I also have Batsugun, but never played in Yoko..Ill check it out

i think Battle Garegga's yoko is good enough when i am lazy and don't want to rotate.

layer section's is, as was stated, really sucky.
I have no sig whatsoever.

i just got home and took a look at Batsugun, it has two yoko modes:

The second one is the wobble mode, it displays maybe 3/5ths of the screen at a time, if you venture into the top the screen does as you'd expect and wobbles.

The first mode is non wobble, you only get the bottom part of the play area.

IMO neither are particularly decent.

Gekirindan takes the cake, fo sho. Worse than any of the other games mentioned imo, and pretty much the worst Yoko mode I've encountered in any game, period.

Thanks for all of your replies!

Think I'll pick up Shienryu and Sonic Wings, and give Batsugun a miss.

I'd buy a TATEable RGB monitor...especially since Batsugun is such a damn fine game while Shienryu and SWS aren't worth anyone's time.

Like many of your own opinions you use to state as fact this one is debatable.

Ah, quit whining. Batsugun's superiority to those two is damn near scientific fact.

Apart from the way in which you well, can't. Seriously, play it, the game remains unscaled/unchanged graphically so it just *can't* fit completely on-screen. The top part of the screen isnt visible, enemies that far up neither shoot nor take damage, power up ships don't make it all the way onto the screen, you can't see the top part of the first boss etc etc. It's cramped, the game gives you a few extra pixels of movement under the power bar at the bottom as some form of compensation but still, it's cramped and does not 'play perfectly'.

In tate mode though it does play perfectly which is of course rather ace.

Must admit, I found Saturn Batsugun to be a swine in Uoko as well. The Stage 2 boss used to give me nightmares, eased up a lot when I played in TATE.

Batsugun Yoko Mode is excellent.

Sonic Wings Special is just fine (Average Saturn Yoko display mode) & also has Interlaced mode. As for Tate mode you can not flip the joypad so you'd be forced to play on your side.

As for Shienry, it's a bit on the small side compared to the other 2 but it's very playable. It does have two grey vertical borders on the sides that are not plain black like the 2 black horizontal borders on the top & bottom of the screen...
Same as Sonic Wings, in Tate mode you can not flip the joypad so you'd be forced to play on your side...

Twin Cobra II also has a good Yoko mode.
It's very similar to most Genesis Vertical Shooters, where the Score, Lives & Bombs are displayed inside a vertical black border on the right side of the screen.

One of the best Yoko modes on the Saturn, must be that of Steam Hearts. It covers the whole screen like in Radiant Silvergun.
