Great tune (did you know it's one of Devil Crash MD's omake tracks?). Even moreso than usual for Tecno Soft, EM's whole soundtrack is standout material.

>GREAT SPIRIT OVERTURE (Title)
>CURSED DESTINY (Opening Demo)
>TERROR OF THE GLACIER (Stage 5)
>SORROWFUL REQUIEM (Ending)
>SETTING OUT (Staff Roll)

edit: AWW NO, I didn't read the first post! Too many tracks, sry!

I cannot express how much I love the opening theme and opening to Elemental Master. It's like the pinnacle of 90's awesomeness.

Yeah Elemental Master has some of the best music and atmosphere of early '90s console shooters, which is saying alot :)
And I have heard the remix from Dragon's Fury. Was actually considering posting it instead of the original, but I decided on the original. Thanks for posting the remix though, it's a really good one :)

I just updated the playlist with the contents from page 3 and it's nearly hitting 7 hours by that point. I may say that I didn't expect this to grow like that in just 2 weeks...Thank you very much to all of you guys.

Now back on this. Last night I stayed up until 2am while playing the Steam version of "Jamestown" with my brother and fell in love with this track:

Jamestown - Prisoner Of The Badlands

Oh boy, how strings and trumpets make every track grow exponentially better.

Anything from RayStorm is a great time, but my favorites are Geometric City and Catharsis

Great game if you haven't played it - on the PS1 and Saturn, both versions are a great time, but for you audiophiles you'll appreciate the PS1 version if you have the right model of PS1 :)

Wow, nice. I had no idea Soukyugurentai had such nice music. No idea what your theme is though.
Ikaruga has some decent music, though, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhfaQuDtZ1E
Not really your typical shmup music (though Souky also seems to have some pretty orchestral stuff, too)
Stage 5 is definitely my favorite track from that classic.

Although someone has uploaded the full OST as a single track, I couldn't find just Stage 5; so I took it upon myself to fix that:

Soukyugurentai - "Intense Cold Oil Fields Base" (Stage 5)

A nice thread for one's first post I guess.
On topic: when watching some Hyper Duel video on nico, this one track really stood out in my opinion (though it's certainly no sleeper):

Hyper Duel - Cosmo Babylon

Funnily, even though it's not the longest track, the stage in game seems hardly long enough for it and it's cut short by the boss.

Another Shoot'em Up I especially like the Soundtrack of, though there are many, got to be Nexzr. Also one of the few games with a checkpoint system I don't loathe.

I didn't like Cosmo Babylon's spacier feel as much as the catchier Black Rain or Night Sweeper until I played HD and experienced its effect in-game - hitting its wailing climax in sync with the final and massive popcorn wave against a rushing sky backdrop, neon lasers shredding an onslaught of metal. Audiovisually, atmospherically, etc etc, that is simply a perfect moment - emphatically capped off by the scene's unceremonious and utter obliteration.

HD is a sustained perfect moment, really, in no small part due to Tsukumo. ^__^

I do wish Saturn HD and Blast Wind included SFX/BGM balance sliders. BW very nearly manages a similarly sublime peak in stage 4 (left route) with the simmering "Chaos Breaker" soundtracking a blistering streak of righteous destruction, but it's felt more than heard due to the overpowering explosion SFX.

edit: Wait - where be ILLEGAL ILLUSION? Crumbs, I've already posted a track in this post! Good thing someone else has cited this brilliant Irem track in the recent past!
Colonel BEEFCAEK McHARDPECS wrote:Also, speaking of old favourites... Illegal Illusion from X-Multiply. Languidly dark and dynamic in a way I don't hear often from shooter OSTs outside of ZTT. The way that dead-eyed pulse continually dissolves the forceful refrains back into nothingness is quite special.
Totally, bro.

Nice picks guys

It's probably not quite a true shmup, but Sub Terrania (Zyrinx mega drive game) has a seriously awesome OST. Composition and programming both by Jesper Kyd, of course. Interestingly, I think it's all FM synth rather than also using the PSG (which most good genesis music like techno soft stuff does), but I can't remember why I think that.

Besides being catchy as hell, Gaiden's Speed is one of the genre's finest soundtrackings. Perfectly complements the action developing onscreen. Peppy dogfight with fortress defense squadrons in open space, leading to a rollercoaster buildup as the jaws of the High Speed section appear then *BOOM* anthemic release as the ship plunges down the corridor with barriers crashing all around and missile-spewing bogeys on its six.

R-Type Delta is masterful at this from start to finish, special mention going to stage 6's hideously infested human base "Awakening" and its immensely slow burn from unease to horror to fightback. You can get a good idea of the stage's progression just by listening. ("meat blimp approaching on the radar!")

I see surprisingly many lesser-known titles namedropped by me frequently for reasons other than their music.

Yeah, EM has some of the best VGM ever. IDK that I agree with Dance of Flame being better than Blood Stained Lake, but they both kick ass.

The style of composition in both of the Gunbird games has grown on me over time. Nice bass lines usually.

Whatever happened to that shoutcast channel with all the shmup music?
