Gunforce PCB, no audio

Post by gct »

This evening while cleaning up, I found a Gunforce PCB (and the same dead Carrier Air Wing set from this ancient thread, it's still dead) that I completely forgot I had . It has been stored away for at least 5 or 6 years. Now that I know I had this PCB, I also remember that it was fully working at the time of storage, or at least it was fully working during the earlier part of my ownership of it.

At this time, the game boots up and I can play, but I can't get any sound out of it. I don't think it's my supergun since I got sound out of other boards. I tried buzzing the JAMMA pins but nothing is coming out. Any hints on where I should start looking? Caps don't seem to be blown anywhere, just from visual inspection.

Photo. Do you get a hiss if you turn the volume up to max?

bloodflowers to the rescue again!

I am really struggling with getting clear pictures with my camera, either the whole thing is blurry or some parts are clear but the flash reflection washes out a part of the image. The lighting in my shooting environment is really not ideal, it's relatively dark.

Anyway, I hope these pictures can tell you something...

I didn't notice any hissing at all, or any difference at all when turning the volume pot to its extremes.

I think I tried posting this for sale a long time ago when it still worked, but with my shipping cost there was no way I could do it without taking a loss, which is why I just shoved it in a box for no gain or loss. I actually have 3 or 4 JAMMA PCBs in various states of semi-working that met this fate because nobody wants to pay shipping and they're only worth like $15 or $30 each tops. I was just kind of curious why the audio would stop working, but honestly I'm not that into the game so unless I can actually have more than $0 in my pocket after selling and shipping this, it might just go right back into a cardboard box to be forgotten for another 5 years...

With the volume control set high, run your fingers along the amp pins on the underneath, if you don't hear any hums or anything, the amp has possibly died, or one of the capacitors to the side of it.

Thanks for the advice, system11. No humming whatsoever, doing what you suggested. It's a place to start looking, I'll get around to it one of these days...

So, this was totally a false alarm. The problem is my supergun. I tried the board in one of my older superguns and the audio works perfectly. I'll have to see about fixing my new one.

Sorry for the trouble and thanks for the effort, bloodflowers...
