Cave extra screen preferences?

Post by Spyke »

Hi all,

I was playing about with my Xbox 360 Dodonpachi games last night, and was setting up the extra detail screens in various positions to see if I could get the best out of them. I tried various different positions, sizes and contained information, and after a few playthroughs found that no matter which way I set them up, I found them a distraction that only proved hazardous rather than beneficial. Bear in mind I play on a TATE-d LCD tv.

I assume that some players get more out of these screens than I did? What's your way of setting them up? Do you find them a benefit to the games?

Maybe I've missed something, but I found transferring my attention away from the main play area and then back again to be costly...

There's actually a bug in SDOJ (that was fixed in the patch apparently) where turning on extra windows, particularly input/score display actually causes the game to lag more, thus making it easier...

The only game where I saw the extra displays as being quite handy was Futari, where you could position an extra window zoomed in on your score counter so you knew exactly what colour it was without having to move your eyes high up the screen like say during a boss fight (you can also tell based on the aura around your character, but this is harder to notice when you're surrounded by bullets).

The solution of course is to not use 'em and play with a vertical monitor. :P With a vertical orientation the screen takes up so much space that you can't fit the extra windows on without real estate issues, and seeing the whole screen is more important than having an extra window covering part of it.

I turn all of the superfluous screen modes off during play (I'm playing on 3:4 CRT screens), but will then turn several of them on for capturing replays (which are done in 16:9). Because really, all of those extra screens are for intended for use during playback (they're modeled after Japanese superplay screen layouts)... and not while you're actually playing.

That makes better sense. ;)
