stocking up while in Tokyo

Post by miroku »

Hi all. I`ve been raiding as many shops in Akihabara as I can. So far I got for my Japanese PS2:

Espgaluda
DDP DOJ

and for PS1:

Gunbird 1
Gradius Gaiden
Parodius Deluxe pack
Dodonpachi
Raystorm

Back in the usa I have:
Shikigami 2
Gradius V
R type delta \ final \ 1&2
Ikaruga

Does anyone have any recommendations for any more titles that are hard to find, or that Id be crazy not to try to hunt down while I am here?

btw, the Taito arcade is sweet, they have a whole floor of shooters! 8) I almost spent a fortune in there.

Yeah man, the arcade halls in Akihabara are crazy! Spent a couple of weeks in Tokyo this summer and I spent A LOT of cash in HEY Arcade and Club Sega in Akihabara :D

Harmful Park? whats that one like? i havent heard of it before.

Ive been playing a lot of gradius gaiden and espgaluda so far. Theyre both fantastic.

Monkey Man: I dont think any more japanese girls will fit in my suitcase, so sorry!

Sam: I played mushihimesama a little in the arcade and honestly it didnt do too much for me. I think id rather spend 5000yen on a handful of used titles. I havet seen donpachi anywhere, unfortunately. I have it on MAME but always preferred dodonpachi.

JPN version has Stage Select, but other than that it's pretty much the same. There are some minor differences in gameplay, one of the FAQs in the GameFaqs has them listed.

Harmful Park is a cute'em-up. There's a decent review with screenshots over at Twin Dreams. It's one of the more expensive PS1 shmups. Pretty good, though very easy on defaults.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

cool, thanks for the tips so far.

What do you guys think of the Taito Memories collections? I was thinking about trying some darius games, but I saw they are also on the taito compilations. Will the taito memories discs ever get released in the US? Gamespot didnt sem to have any info on them.

Thanks again guys, my last chance to go to Akihabara will likely be tomorrow afternoon!

I don't think Taito memories will get released in the USA, as a lot of the games on the compilation never got released in US arcades back in the day either.

Really good compilation though, lots of shmups like Darius and Rayforce on there, and lots of other Taito goodness.

But if you set it on "very hard" the game shines in it's full (and indeed VERY HARD!) glory!
I only recently acquired the game and I can honestly say I was stunned by it.
Parodius series have a serious contender (possibly surpasser!) in cuteness/inventiveness here.

If you can find the game for under or about $100, then buy it and you'll never regret it!

In next years top 25 shmups vote, this game proppels itself into my top 10 ever easily...

I actually managed to get a nice-condition copy (no spine though) off eBay for around 70, and I've heard of others getting theirs for closer to 40, so while you're in Japan you might be able to find an even better deal than that (or at least a ways below 100$).

In any event, the game is one of my favorites too; it's got its flaws like anything else, but it still made my top 25 this past year, so it comes recommended.

You have been very lucky (by ebay/online shop standards) getting the game at $70. $40 sounds like a fluke or something (but a nice one if you bought it :P)

Oh, btw: you're avatar still freak me out! ;)

Heh, yeah, I was real proud of myself for managing to get the thing at 70, but then one or two other members mentioned that they got theirs for even less, so that deflated me pretty quick, heh heh. At any rate I'm still glad I bought the game, even at that price, but then again I tend to like silly/cute shmups more than a lot of people around here do.

And don't stare at the av too long, the twitch is contagious. ;)

At auctions.yahoo.co.jp Harmful Park can usually be had for $50-60, so you should be able to find it for under $100 in Japan.

I usually didn't scour too much for Playstation games in Akiahbara, but I usually did give the shooter section a once over. I never saw this game there once.

I don't think you can buy a cave pcb walking around the street. If you are taking a tour, you are out of luck. Unless you settle down for some time, one properby won't able to buy a pcb on a tour.

Are there any shops that have good selections of shmup titles ? If I randomly wander in and out of Traders etc I just see the same non-shmup stuff over and over again :|

I remembered a used game store I went to which is located on the main street of Akihabara and it's up on the 4th floor(?) It had rows after rows of used games, and there were around 10 used Dreamcasts, which I picked up one. I saw Mars Matrix, Gunbird 2 and some others there. I am afraid I forgot name of the store. But the elevator on the street is kinda hidden, and it's next to a cafe. The store is huge.

Hmmm :) Do you remember what was on the other floors ? Ie was it a CD/DVD/porn kind of thing, or more electronics, computers, etc.. Was this on the Hey side of the street, or across ?

I'm a little bored atm so I might hop over and try go find it, so any extra info is welcome :)

Could this be Super Potato Retro Store? Or maybe not... Super Potato was on the 2nd floor in one of the buildings on the main street of Akihabara if I remember correctly...

Finding PCB's in Akihabara isn't that hard, there's about four "serious" stores in the central parts of Akihabara where you can pick up crazy stuff cheap as hell... Some of them do even have nice cheap supergun systems and all that...

G-Front: http://www.gfront.com/

TRY PCB Shop: http://www.try-inc.co.jp/

...and the phattest one; MAK Japan - Arcade Hardware-Software: http://www.mak-jp.com/
