Strongest Father-Son Quarrel settled, some good (if late-running) bonding moments, and both still around for more action. Good stuff, if not what was expected.
That's how I felt at the time, but now I'm beginning to think it was a missed opportunity to go out with a bang.

Thus far, the series has mostly existed on the right side of grounded - some crazy shit happens in fights, but the majority of it can be taken as figurative abstraction over fighting spirit rather than literal oh shit he can project a magic hologram.
Pickle was the first sign of stepping wholly over that line, given that unfreezing a living cretaceous man in perfect form is edging into science fantasy, but bringing Miyamoto Musashi back from the dead by way of a top-secret above-the-law under-the-ground cloning facility wilfully leaps into the realm of ridiculous.

Sure, it's fun to see the man striding around modern-day japan cutting bitches in half, but it feels like we've gone way off the martial arts manga range; Baki hasn't been the main character in a good while, the real-world US politics infection has worsened, and ultimate badass Yuujiro is still walking around being ultimate... But for what? To support a digression? Where's the payoff, the passing of the torch and genesis of a younger, kinder ogre who more resembles his grandfather?

I dunno man, feels like the series has given up and started coasting. Art and presentation is still good, but the destination is no longer known :|

Musashi arc spoilers, start to finish
The whopping, paradigm-mongling suspension of disbelief accepted, I enjoyed Musashi's character a lot. A Sengoku-bred killing machine on par with Yuujiro's most brutal NAMsploits, balanced by a genteel formality and an endearing wonder at his surroundings. He dissed Orochi, then apologised for being such a dick, before beating his ass - class act. Even his encounters with SWAT, while murderous, are marked by a certain restraint I enjoy in my uber-badman shonen nemeses. That holler of "The battle is decided!" was perhaps the series' most giddily macho yet. Hurt their pride more than their necks. Image

But beyond the man himself, I'm perplexed as to what Itagaki was driving at with this flight of outright fantasy, if anything at all. Was it to give his cast a sobering glimpse of what their professed "ready to die" actually means? If so, I applaud; but none of them seem to take the arc's signal fatality as anything but a grave affront - which makes them look uncharacteristically bitchy.

And Retsu was one of my most beloved characters, actually for similar reasons to Musashi, now I think about it - an iron-hard badman from a wicked martial tradition, yet with a classy sense of restraint; never given to base cruelty, let alone the monstrous predations of a Yuujiro, or even the brattier excesses of Baki. But he all but Shanghai'd (haw!) Musashi into cutting him down. (of all the cast, Retsu's reaction is the one I don't have any issue with - the poor bastard died dreaming of his comeback, as he would've)
Maybe it was a "never meet your heroes" thing.

Mind games, Junior, mind games

I only have passing knowledge of Ali, but all of his scenes were really enjoyable alternate reality character writing :)

I feel like there was some unspoken subtext with Jr. getting his shit absolutely destroyed by the returning cast of masters  never stated directly, but their ruthless hazing seemed to go further than simple response to challenge; no doubt looking after their boy Baki.
Though I thought the Great Prison Battle saga was a tad weak, eh pibe? The fleshing-out (har har) of Biscuit's muscular backstory was solid, but it seemed a bit clown shoes shock value between the hot potato political framing, and bipolar Bunk Pals in Death Penalty Prison vibe.
Some great moments, but on the whole felt like it was trying to relive the glory days of World's Most Dangerous Serial Killers, similar to Great Chinese Challenge's callback to Maximum Tournament, but falling a bit short.
I binged the Raitai tournament's anime, mostly out of obligation to see if Baki could beat Yanagi's disgraceful HIV Slap  Some alright fanservicey novelty in Baki and his old man teaming up, and Retsu got lots of screentime, always a plus in my book - and Yuujiro himself remained talismanic. A nemesis as compelling in soliloquy as smackdown. But in hindsight, not a patch on the lunatic total war of its preceding arc, and most definitely no match for the A1 competitive fighting shonen of SAIDAI TONAMENTO.

I had to tap out on the Black Pentagon followup... it was alright enough, but the sense of wheel-spinning got to me. This was actually where I decided to read the manga from page 1, having long since known the basic outline from myriad AMVs and mid-00s clips - and god damn, I suspect I might've tapped on Raitai too, if I'd known exactly what I was missing.

Image

GRAPPLER BATEMAN or OEDIPUS OU (`w´メ)

I like the Baki mangas, as a general rule - but after the punishingly twisted boyhood arc, the combat shonen inferno (feat NAM) of Saidai, and a bracing interval of utter mad gorefest in MOST DANGEROUS, it's very much a case of Baki vs Yuujiro feat. Everything Else.

I get the feeling from Itagaki's comments that he's just having fun riding out his 35yr legacy at this point. A mostly likeable grab bag.

I've been curious about the Garou Den manga he apparently contributed to (can't recall if it was art, script, or both) - might be an antidote to the later Baki books' excesses? Apologies if it's the exact opposite, hard to tell with this guy.

GKids finally released the all-English language version of "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.11: Thrice Upon A Time" on both Blu-ray & 4K UHD formats today, 10-16-2023. It's about damn time that they did so. GKids did release Evangelion 3.0 + 1.11 on the big screen at select movie theater chains stateside back in December of 2022 as a limited 3-day screening engagement. Ordered the Limited Edition 4K UHD set off of Amazon that comes with a cool poster as a bonus (the JPN LE 4K UHD set of the same name doesn't have a poster included anyways which I own as well). Looks quite dazzlingly awesome & razor sharp in 4K UHD format indeed.

Can confirm K-On is great. So is Love Live, to my surprise.

LL Sunshine kind of sucked miserably for most of its existence, however.

Looks like they took the coward approach to the incest with Irregular at Magic Highschool. This is something that always amused me. If you are going to *heavily* lean into the incest anyway, just go for it. Of course they could just not do the incest crap to begin with.

I tried Love Live but it didn't hit the same as K-On! for me.

Wait no really? I didn't go deep enough to see if there was any chickenshit.

That doesn't sound very ubermensch to bend to the whims of majority opinion. Some objectivist you turned out to be, author-san! You'll never be a sigma male at this rate.

Of course they could just not do the incest crap to begin with.

I skimmed a video essay yesterday where a lady gave her opinion that My Hero Academia was sexist. I always get a little annoyed by that, whether they mean "horny" when they say "sexist". All entertainment has to have a target audience after all; it's not like soaps are made to appeal to guys.

(The Dragon Ball guy making all the female characters into brood mares to poop out the "real" characters later is indeed pretty f'd up though.)

Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, just put in your sister-smooching fantasies already author-san. It's what your fans want to see.

This reminds me of that Infinite Stratos knockoff show - another guy basically copied it, but made it into much more of a softcore porno. That author-san really really really liked the domineering sister character from Infinite Statos.

I think that's how a lot of fiction gets made: someone copying something else, but fixing what they felt was wrong in the original. It's an iterative process.

Wait, getting back on the rails. I wonder if this was a change from Irregular 's source material, they do that sometimes to make something more marketable.* This is one light novel I haven't read and isn't on my stack, so someone else will have to research that theory.

* With the emergence of AI, a lot of memories of old scifi shows get dredged up lately. Chobits is one of them: I heard that in the original ending the android girl admits she doesn't really have consciousness or qualia and everyone shrugs their shoulders and says it doesn't matter. In the animation though she has qualia, for no reason. Besides making viewers feel fuzzy.

I like the original ending better.

i did not enjoy love live

I haven't given the show a shot, but I'm pretty certain it's not my thing. But lots of others love it and I don't mean to pile on.

On franchises with a lot of characters, Rage of Bahamut is way better than it has any right to be. Cygames is smart enough to pare down their gigantic casts when presenting a story. Most gacha game-derived shows throw way too many characters into the sawmill at once, instead of recreating the experience of a new player completely alone and flat on their ass with trash that can barely kill a rabite.

I'm downloading the Mahouka light novels right now since you asked lol. I will say skimming the internet for ending spoilers it's probably more incestuous than the anime went with. No surprise there. In general I don't expect anything else to quite be Oreimo again. Poor Kuroneko.

ETA: Oh my. Yeah the light novel appears quite different. Full incest situation for sure.

Honestly Love Live and K-On! are very different shows. I tried to explain this to someone that called K-On! "idol trash". Any comps need to *begin* with 4Koma CGDCT. Bocchi the Rock! looks like a decent imitation with a difference in focus, I'll check it out at some point.

It's a pretty good cake and tea eating simulator.

The second season especially I was like "guys...... can we play some music?????? Pleeeassse?????"

And they looked down at me and said "no."

It's time for tea.

That is the biggest problem with LL. Big cast and only so much time to develop them, so it ends up feeling abrupt. Everyone gets like a single episode or parts of episodes and then it rotates to someone else next time. Good thing the second season and the weird movie are there.

Speaking of movies, I saw the K-On movie in the theater on Okinawa when it was released. I don't remember much about it, though, and I don't think I've watched it since then. They gave away pieces of film from the movie at the theater. Still have mine, although I am not sure where I put it. Pretty sure it was several frames of Azusa writing her letter.

Absolutely. I love the original Love Live. LL Sunshine I didn't like the characters and it seemed too much like trying to recreate the original with different but similar characters. I haven't been able to see the other shows.

On the other hand, K-On bored me to death; I think I watched nearly all of it because someone I know likes it so much, but it just does absolutely nothing for me. I don't like Azusa at all; really Mio is the only character I like, and I dislike a show that is as long as this one is that really has no real plot or character progression, where you can watch a lot of the episodes in any order and it makes zero difference. I don't expect this type of show to have a week to week continuing plot, but at least some degree of some kind of progression. Aside from the fact that school goes on and part of them are graduating there's really nothing. That is around where I stopped watching though.

I think Sound Euphonium! (also from Kyoto Animation) is awesome though.

Bocchi the Rock! is full of sight gags and weird off-model (intentional) animation styles. I dislike it because of that; if it didn't have all that I think it would be pretty good, unlike K-On there is real character growth, at least for Bocchi.

Sunshine sucks for the most part and isn't really worth watching. It's far too derivative of the original for too long since it literally recycles exactly the same plot and then when it finally manages to break free of that it's far too late. Yohane is fun and maybe it's worth watching just for her and Saint Snow, but that's about it.

Not sure if K-On is better in its original 4koma manga format or as an anime. I'm tempted to say the anime was actually better, but I'm not sure. It's been like a decade since I read or watched it, so I'd have to read and watch it again to decide.

Nichijou is probably my favourite KyoAni show, though. Maybe it's because it's just so fucking weird, but for some reason I really like it.

I have yet to watch Nichijou though I own the blu-rays. I've seen a few clips.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is fun though I haven't seen the second season yet.

I have only seen a little bit of Chu2koi so far though I also own that.

I've seen some of Tamako Market and I like that much more than K-on for a show that I guess is a somewhat similar style.

I have Violet Evergarden which I also haven't watched unfortunately. Interests exceed available time. :(

But of the things I have seen, Sound! Euphonium is my favorite. It was very emotional for me, but I like soap opera haha. I haven't seen the movie yet. (I know there's more than one, but I think the others are just compilation movies, and anyway they don't exist with subtitles, at least not officially.)

Looking at the works list on the Kyoani website, I guess I've seen at least a little of many of their works. Haven't seen any of the "pretty guy" shows like Free! or Tsurune but just not interested in those. I think they're a pretty special studio though that seems to really put their all into everything they do. The fire disaster was so sad.

Nichijou is really really strange. If someone says they hate Nichijou for being what it is, I'd totally understand. If someone says they love Nichijou for being what it is, I'd understand that too. It defies genre and simply is what it is, and what it is is weird. Need to go read the manga, which recently resumed after a long hiatus and is currently running, eventually.

I have been meaning to watch Violet Evergarden for some time, if only because the CEO of Innocent Grey really likes it and I trust in his good taste after playing through 7 of his games. Then again, I started watching Lycoris Recoil because Kojima really liked it and I just kind of stopped after 4 or 5 episodes, not because I disliked or anything, so who knows.

That fire was really bad, though. I was at work when it happened and it was all over the news immediately.

I can understand that complaint with K-On! but personally it doesn't bother me at all. It's a top 5 do nothing show for me. I don't need there to be stakes for the characters or what not and in fact that is something I enjoyed about it.

Violet Evergarden is pretty good.

Not KyoAni but definitely check out Your Lie In April if you haven't already.

I can honestly say no other piece of media has ever made me shed actual tears like one specific episode of Violet Evergarden. But then, there was a strong connection between the episode's theme and what was going on in my personal life at the time.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

k-on season 2 rules because just about every episode has some underlying theme of "this is our last year in high school and the light music club, oh no, we don't want it to end..." so you're constantly being reminded of that. and then it does, pretty much without any surprises or twists, and despite all that, it's like the saddest thing you've ever seen

I am ok with some do nothing shows, but not when they have 39 episodes; that is just too much nothing. My bigger problem with K-On! though, I think, is that I just do not like the characters at all, other than Mio. The other three just irritate me. Sawako was my favorite character by far.

I have it, and before that was able to watch about half of it, but need to get back to it. I don't remember exactly how many episodes I saw except it was far enough to know it was going to be sad. I'll start over from the beginning when I get to it.

Oof. Well, whenever you get tired of feeling happy in your life, it'll be sitting there. Waiting.

It's kind of funny how so many of the early webnovels that got made into bigger things had things like thoughts and feelings put into them. As opposed to the absolute river of shallow violence+libido power fantasy exploiting cruft that's the norm.

Like I said, derivative. I've mentioned before about how it's like everyone took Mushoku Tensei, and ripped out all the good ideas and tossed them into the garbage.

Especially the idea that a protagonist can be flawed, weak, or have a personality. Just the very idea of being challenged is anathema to them for some reason, like they need to play all their games on the games journalist difficulty setting. Sexy Sect Babes is a male power fantasy in a similar vein - yet he's always getting his shit kicked in by the climax of a book. So you can clap when he wiggles his way out. The threat is presented as an actual threat.

... the series about the retired war vet becoming a mom to a bunch of doomed leprechaun girls isn't a male power fantasy, for those out of the loop. It's one of the few animated series I'd show to a mainstream audience.

It's kind of amazing how much facial expressions really add to a series. I Become a Rogue Lord in a World Where Only I Level Up's light novel illustrations are.... well, let's call them a little stiff and unmemorable. (I like the coloring, though. The slightly washed out palette trying to approximate water colors isn't something that gets used too often.)

The manga, though. About every other page the protagonist is making a goofy reaction face. Usually some version of smug scheming as he envisions all the winning he'll be doing from his plans. Or shock from something unexpected jamming a stick into his bicycle wheels. It's just fun to look at.

The beginning at least is mostly good in my opinion. I have a soft spot for these base building/strategy game type stories, since they're naturally inclined to generate variety as the protagonist's towns and armies get built up. And it's possible for the MC to take losses and setbacks since losing a battle doesn't mean the MC dies.

Demystification is a hell of a thing! For my part, some of the best scenes in the series are Yuujiro stepping down from his pinnacle to have a relatively normal human interaction; the sense of contrast is what makes it, because you can't quite believe it's happening, enhanced further by the possibility that diplomacy may yet fail.

Bushido Business
It was puzzling to see most of the cast reduced to jobber status, only for Motobe to take the fore after a lengthy period in lower bracket. Good material, seeing as he had a mysterious killing aura from volume 1, but the mamoru angle dragged on long.
And bringing out Hanayama as the state-approved solution after teasing the Ogre made no sense; a fine showing on its merits, but it wasn't long ago that he was the poster boy for sitting back and knowing one's limits!

I enjoyed Musashi's character, though struggled with it some; he comes off as almost psychopathic on first read, single-mindedly focused on seeking a challenge, and always sizing up a good theoretical cut even absent a proper opponent.
But despite being similarly unparalleled, he's not Early Yuujiro. On reflection the man-out-of-time conceit gives me a kind of Barbarian Fiction vibe; behaviour that's at odds with civilized society, but is nonetheless bound by a moral code.

I think I can give it more credit in retrospect, now I'm over the Fonzie And GRRM Ramp A Jetski factor

Though Itagaki may have written himself into a corner with Baki and Yuujiro. Yuujiro can't get involved in main-cast stuff without undermining the father-son saga, and Baki likewise can't defeat a Yuujiro-level threat without putting the still-provisionally-active Strongest Being On Earth title in question!

And thus, Baki's big moment barely even lasted... Pipped to the post by granny tokugawa's mugen tongue technique. Meanwhile, Dad is abroad brandishing MENACING WOOD in the halls of power

Baki's in an odd position now - too beastly for most fights, but not enough to achieve Japanese (anti-)Jesus status.
Following through on his promise to murder the fuck out of Musashi might have moved the needle a bit, though I can understand dodging the associated cultural hubris.

The team-up was cool - a deftly-executed sidestep away from early climax, with fanservice enough to keep the audience placated :)

Retsu is superb, definitely a cast favourite - a paragon of discipline and learning worth of his title.
The spotlighting of 4000 Years (give or take) of Chinese Kenpo! in general has me wanting to see more - I hear Shaw Brothers movies are a good place to look.
Spoiler
Damn shame to lose one of the best characters, perhaps even cruel after putting him on the comeback upslope after the loss of his leg, but he went out strong 8)
The Ancient Sumo arc has seemed curiously grounded by comparison; nothing too crazy*, just men of grand stature.

Taken alongside Musashi, it could be seen as a shift in material toward pillars of Japanese culture. Though on the flipside, I suppose you could argue that the martial arts focus was always that, and it's simply a case of dipping deep into the well with a bit of wiggling to fit.
*
Okay, maybe a little crazy since Katsumi just got his arm graft, though it's still up in the air as to whether that's sword of my fallen comrade or full on Retsu Kaioh stand powers.

After the mention of eventual manbeast grappling, I was half expecting the Musashi arc to springboard into resurrecting the man as a gene-spliced hybrid

Almost ready for it too, since full Fuck It escalation was starting to look like the solve for the lingering powerlevel issues of Father / Son. Having him continue to round out Katsumi's rough edges after death is much more tasteful, and for that I'm thankful

Steamflogger Boss wrote: Wed Oct 18, 2023 12:12 pm Honestly Love Live and K-On! are very different shows. I tried to explain this to someone that called K-On! "idol trash". Any comps need to *begin* with 4Koma CGDCT. Bocchi the Rock! looks like a decent imitation with a difference in focus, I'll check it out at some point.

It's clear that you have a distinct preference when it comes to anime, and that's perfectly fine – everyone has their own unique tastes. The "Love Live!" series is beloved by many for its characters and music, and it's understandable that you might not have connected with "Love Live! Sunshine!!" due to the similarities and differences between the two.

"K-On!" is another series known for its slice-of-life style, and it's true that not everyone enjoys the lack of a significant overarching plot or character progression. It can be a hit or miss for viewers depending on their preferences. Your assessment of "Sound! Euphonium" is interesting; it's known for its more serious take on music and character development, which sets it apart from some other music-themed anime.

"Bocchi the Rock!" seems to be a divisive series, with its unique animation style and humor. It's good to hear that you appreciate the character growth in the show, even if the visual style doesn't quite align with your personal taste. Different strokes for different folks, as they say!

Anime is a diverse medium, and there's something out there for everyone. It's great that you've explored various series and found ones that resonate with you.

Are you ready to go out of your comfort zone? How about wayyyyyy out of it? Shussan no Shikata ga Wakaranai! is a manga about a married couple, which the wife is infertile (no ovulation). So, she goes about getting various medical help to get pregnant. It's worth noting this is autobiographical. I found it to be pretty hilarious, definitely not something you read every day. It's a short read, too. Be prepared to embrace your inner mammal, you're gonna need it.

SHOCKING!!!

So I went searching for that manga with the alligator head guy who loves gyoza. 150ish chapters later, I'd say it's worth a recommend.

It's called Dorohedoro, a.k.a. Mud to Mud or Mud Sludge depending on how you hyphenate, and is a grime-dark mystery set in a magically-infused garbage world; The sort of place where asshole mages pop in from the reality next door to practise gribbly body horror spells on the long-suffering human populace.

(I'll leave that particular part for the reader to discover independently, might be one to avoid if you can't handle Kafka.)

It follows Kaiman - a violent and easygoing saurian-top rocking this year's trend in industrial couture - who lost his memory and human head in a magician attack, and is hunting the perpretator with the help of Nikaido; friend, punch girl, and local restaurant owner.

Image

Being an amnesiac, our hero doesn't remember the villain's face, and has to refer suspects to the strange man living in his throat for identification:
Did he say IT'S NOT YOU?
Image
It's good stuff; weird as they come, seat-of-the-pants enough to never be predictable, with plenty of black comedy to complement the dirt and gore.
The art's great too!
Image
It vascillates effectively between the day-to-day poverty of the human world, the Masked Ball laissez-faire of magical crime families, and the all-day every-day fun of their patron devils in hell. God is probably dead or something, it hasn't come up.
Other-other hobbies include raising the dead, and sprinkling dried bird shit on passing sorcerors
Image
BLAME fans will feel at home, as the reader is thrown in medias res headfirst and left to puzzle things out as they're dragged along for the ride. By comparison, Doro balances the violence and staging with more character work, but the sense of xenomystery is familiar throughout.
Memories of Megastructure
Image
And it's solid character work; most everyone is a massive weirdo by default, so there's plenty of colour without feeling formulaic.

In short, everything in shambles! That is Dorohedoro!

Ah man, you're the third TRVE+HONEST Shumps Fren™ to recommend that one - I must investigate! BLAME rec resonating hard - how I wish Miyazaki et al would lend a bit of their Berserk-poaching ears to that one. Here is fathomless underground megacity in ambiguous Dark Techno Future, pussy! Eat it! FUCK!

Despite loving BLAME's doomed technopolis, I gotta admit my pain threshold for the dumpster bizarro is a bit underdeveloped. I'll watch Genocyber episode 2 while wolfing down KFC - I'm not insensitive, just a realist  - but I gotta steel myself for alligator head man and boobs-chan's tale of eldritch misfortune in Bad Smell AVE. Saw a brief fight clip featuring the latter, hit pretty fuckin hard; reminded me of Kengan Ashura's successful parlay of 3DCG into concussive tooth-rattling punishment :o

See also Golden Kamuy, which is nearer my HNK-bred wheelhouse, but still kinda odd-lookin. The fap fight kinda turned me off, but maybe the MAXIMUM TOURNAMENT's crowd-blanketing "SHOWER OF SWEAT, TEARS AND PISS™" has inured me some?

TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOURSELF SUGIMOTO-SAN (`w´メ)

As is my effort-averse wont, I spent the weekend orbiting old favourites, namely Shigurui - which was on my mind after a romping DS1 revisit as Mike Smith, the tragically under-fed gardener, press-ganged into lordly service after he brained five motherfuckers with a shovel when he was nine!

Man is born to carnage.

This world itself is Hell.

A strange and wonderful case amongst adaptations - "FAAACK they only covered the first few chapters! BUT they did so at such floorboard-shatteringly heavy, TRVE KVLTIC Image pace, each authentically catastrophic exchange agonisingly contemplated from "Sup pussy duel at Old Saw Mill 4pm or ur gay lmao" notification to *BPPPLTH* resolution, it feels longer than the entire fuckin manga!"
