Just because Ibara isn't doing well doesn't mean it is because of their marketing tactic or their character design. If it's not doing well it's because Ibara is a different breed of gameplay to what most Cave fans are used to, and because of that, it probably turned them off the game.dave4shmups wrote:Although I agree with UD-there's no need for Cave to go down to the lowest common denominator with this smut. Maybe Ibara would've done better if Cave had put more effort into the game itself, rather then all the sexual crap involved with it.
Take into consideration:
Games made between Donpachi and Mushi = Cave-style
Ibara = Raizing-style <-- not many people like these, remember?
Meh, sex sells. Take it with a grain of salt. I have to admit that I thought the close up panty shot when you beat the first level in Ibara was pretty funny (Pretty much what you see in my avatar). Ibara is a great shooter, and some close ups of panties isn't going to stop anyone in Japan from playing the game (trust me). Aside from the sexy girl bosses, it's pretty obvious that design-wise Ibara is a dedication to Battle Garegga. Don't get me wrong, the bullet patterns and difficulty are up to par with all the other Cave games and I personally can't wait until I can get my hands on an Ibara board.
Hail Atlantis!

I know that the idea is that if we let anything "slide," or deem appropriate, we'll eventually be saying that (as of now) far worse things are somewhat "O.K." because there are even worse things... But, that's sort of underestimating human decency, I think. There's nothing inherently sexual about a naked girl or boy, provided that it's not doing anything... well... sexual. It's mostly when persons inclined to think about sexual matters come into contact with such subjects or instances, that things start to become tainted. The sexually perverted/deprived/abused in our society beget more sexually perverted/deprived/abusive notions and persons, and so for those of whom do not immediately think of sexual matters when viewing such content, the matter instead will tend to be something relating to the aforementioned sexually perverted/deprived/abused persons, being that this sort of thing should not be available anywhere in order to keep it from the SP/D/A persons and preventing any further SP/D/A notions, and it's still tainted.
Don't get me wrong; There are definitely some sexually-related messages coming across from these Cave people--However, they seem to be generally more pure and clean, to me. A fit, virile young person will typically be more pleasant to view than an overweight, deteriorating old one (though a fit, wise old one would be nice as well). In this case, a young girl--Energetic and lively, chipper and cheerful. Certainly, she might have somewhat of an unrealistically proportioned figure, but one could say the same thing about the virile, nude bug that she rides atop on many promotional materials. Large breasts and a fit midsection are no more lewd or distasteful than the old comment relating to "child-bearing hips." Large breasts signify to the male instinct that nurturing food will be plentiful in the early stages of a newborn's life, and a fit midsection of course indicates that there will indeed be room for life therein, not to mention a healthy growing environment within a likely-active and healthy woman.
"But nobody actually looks like that. Every woman is different!"
Well, if they have breasts and a midsection (which most women do), then this is somewhat of a moot issue. Anyone with a proper diet and exercise regimen can look positively radiant, even if they don't have blue hair or a cute outfit.
"That's totally off-topic. We're talking about nudie paper dolls, here."
Back to the doll: It's a naked girl. As cigs mentioned, she is not anatomically correct. She's not in any sort of suggestive pose. Granted, she could have undergarments or something, but that would likely lead to even more calls of indecency from various groups, and they're not necessary anyway. Here in the US, we tend to be deprived and somewhat perverted. Revealing clothing is associated with having sex, and since sex is so publicly shunned and hushed, it tends to be a lot of what we think about. (Granted, once you reach a certain age, you're instinctually driven to procreate, but even besides that.) In effect, we've made us the way that we are by our own practices and social rules, and it sort of stinks.
Then again, this has all been said before. I was in a typing mood.
Her hair is amazing--It goes all the way down to her feet! Anyone else like those adorable stockings and gloves?

Heh, if you think those are equivalent to what some here are talking about, you've clearly never seen Japanese porn.dave4shmups wrote:Umm, last time I checked Hugh Hefner and Larry Flint weren't Japanese namesDandy J wrote:Don't blame Cave, blame the wierdo Japanese culture.
Hugh Hefner, especially, just takes pictures of naked women. Playboy is about as soft as porn can possibly get. Not much of a comparison.

Both Atari and Williams/Midway did all sorts of different stuff also. Williams´ ONLY claim to fame in the shmup department is probably due to Eugene Jarvis.
With regard to Llamasoft I agree (though they´re not US based). One of the best independent shmup dedicated companies in the world.

If you replace the word clone with homage, remove the word shameless and add extremely playable, I couldn´t agree more.pixelcorps wrote:Tempest 2000, Tempest 3000 - originally atari's gamesbVork wrote: \

Even as paper dolls, though, it's kind of crap, because they don't line up well. I was trying very hard not to resize her clothes in Photoshop...

Christ, the puritanism on this board is ridiculous. There is *nothing* wrong with sex. It's been selling stuff for years. Am I the only one that appreciates a good T&A package with their game. I'm not going to buy something just because of that, but as a bonus it sure as hell gets me to commit easier.

I'll bet that it's the picture of the cut-out sheet that is slightly at an angle, thus yielding not-quite-fitting clothing... It still looks very nice, though!
