Help debugging DVDO iScan HD

Post by rivals »

I picked up an iScan HD off eBay and it arrived yesterday. It seems functional, and the seller claims it is (he's also been really helpful, offered full refund on return or partial refund if I keep it), but I can't get it to work. I can't get the On-Screen Display to appear, or anything to output when I have an input attached. I'll try to give as much information as possible. Everything I've done I've tried on both an Asus VH236H monitor, and a Samsung LED TV (excluding the dvi->dvi tests as the TV doesn't have DVI in).

When I plug it in, the display on the device reads DVDO for a few seconds followed by LOAD for about 5-6 minutes until it boots and turns on (I tested this about 4 times, it was within that time range each time). I followed the booklet instructions on setting it up for DVI using a DVI->HDMI cable to no avail. I tried then with a DVI->DVI cable with no luck as well. For both of this I tested both DVI A/D modes (DVIP and DVII, IIRC). I then tested VGA->VGA using the recommended settings in the manual and quick start guide with nothing showing up as well.

I tested each of these with and without input sources. Without an input source, the input light was red (as expected) and the power light was solid green (as expected). Every test without an input source I tried pressing "INFO" and other settings on the remote that should make the OSD show up, these resulted in changes to the display on the device but nothing on screen. With an input source there was no light next to the input (as expected, I had this set to auto and it correctly detected the source) and the power light was solid blue meaning that it was processing and outputting a signal. The input sources were: PS2 over composite, Dreamcast over composite.

I then read up a bit and decided to update the firmware, so I pulled out my RS-232 to USB cable and updated to the latest firmware on their site. It loaded and verified correctly. I ran all of the same tests (every combination) with no progress. Needless to say it took up a rather large chunk of my time last night.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of troubleshooting information online about this device so I'm coming to you guys and hoping someone can help me out. At this point it's either something incredibly obvious I overlooked or it's something really specific I probably wouldn't find on my own. I e-mailed the seller and he said he wasn't experienced with it enough to help and offered the aforementioned solutions, and I've sent an e-mail to DVDO support. Thanks in advance to anyone checking this out, I'm pretty much out of ideas as to what else I can try.

Which output resolution and refresh rate did you set during your tests ?

I used 720p and 1080p for output resolution, though I'm not sure if I used both on every combination. For refresh rate (I believe on the device labeled as framelock?) I used 60 only.

Anyone else have suggestions? I'm stuck at home this weekend so I'd like to play around with it. I fiddled with it more tonight but can't get it to cooperate at all. DVDO support was less than helpful, their response was just "Please make sure you are using the correct A/D setting". When I said I tried both DVIP and DVIV I never heard back. Sigh.

It should be very straight forward. You should get a picture without a source connected (blue background). I would test it once again on a PC displays. Use the analogue output, use a PC resolution like XGA and make sure to set the output to analogue as well. If you don't get a picture this way, the unit's damaged.

Yeah, I pulled out another monitor, ran all the same tests, tried analogue etc, no luck. Just sent the seller a message to return it and I'm back on the hunt for an upscaler I suppose. After reading your reviews the VP20/VP30 seem good because ideally I'd like something with RGB/S in. Thanks for the help, again!
