Nothing yells "respectful memorial discussion" like accusing somebody of being racist. Stay classy, Friendly! (But that said, it's interesting how non-Jewish people seem to think that the term is a slur, myself included.)

Because it's a noun and not an adjective (Jew-something instead of Jewish-something). And I am always classy. 8)

PS.
There were 0 accusations in my post, only a question.

So racism is a matter of grammar now. Classy AND smart, that's Friendly for you. This thread is becoming tragic again, but not for the reasons intended. Friendly, please refrain from writing anything else shit-brained, and leave the thread for memorials, thanks.

On topic, I never heard of the guy but I'll check him out now.

I don't like Friendly as much as the next guy ( ) but yeah that's pretty uncalled for.

Seemed like he had a pretty strong passion for a lot of different things, and overall came off as just a nice dude.
I was a casual fan of his show, and it seemed like he was a genuinely nice person, and he was always not just informative, but passionate about his work. It's sad we'll never see one of his videos again.

I apologize for making you feel under attack - which really wasn't my intention. However, we're not going to have any progress as long as you keep up that "I can do no wrong" attitude, and it would be nice to recognize that maybe a thread for memorials is not the place to ask for dirt on the recently deceased, nor for lame rationalizations about why you wanted said dirt. But I have to observe that, as usual, the more we can see under the hood, the uglier it gets. Why is that?

Pete Seeger has died, age 95. A hack writing for the National Review expresses surprise that President Obama didn't take the opportunity to denounce Seeger's past association with Communism, an inappropriate suggestion for a memorial if there ever was one.

Instead, let's remember that Pete Seeger refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee not on the safe-and-tested Fifth Amendment Grounds, but on grounds of the First Amendment, invoking the right of freedom of association, stating "I am not going to answer any questions as to my associations, my philosophical or my religious beliefs, or how I voted in any election or any of these private affairs. I think these are very improper questions for any American to be asked." Although other moments from that era are better-remembered, this unique legal assertion may have been crucial to the modern understanding of our rights as citizens.

Following a conviction of contempt of Congress, he was sentenced to a year in prison, which thankfully was overturned. However, his major challenge from the time was in dealing with the ever-present bastard blacklist, which had backers across the liberal-conservative divide during that postwar era. He eventually overcame that, but not after having first lost many opportunities to perform and earn an honest living.

Pete Seeger's wife since 1943, Toshi, passed away six months ago.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman, dead of a suspected drugs overdose. He was only 46 - pretty good actor.

Not really suspected; he had a needle still in his arm when they found him, and they found heroin at the place. Pretty cut and dry. Sad though :/

I saw his name a lot recently, but (sad to say) can't remember seeing anything with him in it.
"There's a little boy and on his 14th birthday he gets a horse... and everybody in the village says, "how wonderful. The boy got a horse" And the Zen master says, "we'll see." Two years later, the boy falls off the horse, breaks his leg, and everyone in the village says, "How terrible." And the Zen master says, "We'll see." Then, a war breaks out and all the young men have to go off and fight... except the boy can't cause his legs all messed up. and everybody in the village says, "How wonderful."
I say, see ya around, cowboy.

His best performances include Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, The Master, Capote, and Synecdoche, New York. And a ton of other stuff, besides. Sadness.

He had a brief cameo in Hard Eight too, one of my favourite movies ever.

I always thought he was a tad overrated as an actor, but still good nonetheless. Liked him in Boogie Nights, MI III and recently in Hunger Games 2. Didn't know he was on smak.

I didn't either. I've not seen him anything recently, but I've been out of the loop kind of on movies. Been meaning to see The Master, but haven't been able to give it the time it deserves. I definitely will now. I always loved him in his rather small but memorable rolls. The ones that stick out the most are definitely Boogie Nights (classic) and Big Lebowski. I guess I always grouped him w/ William H Macy, as guys I'd see here and there but took me forever to remember their names (even though I loved Fargo... damn green flowers). Anywho, Capote was the clincher for me. I think he definitely deserved it the award.

I'm still shocked nobody on my FB feed has said he's a despicable human being for doing Heroin. For some weird reason I'm friends w/ a lot of really conservative people.

LOL. While he wasn't in that seen, it was definitely one of the best done ones in the movie.

Definately one of this generation's best....excellent in supporting and starring roles. His performance in Before the Devil Knows Your Dead is one of the best I've seen. Excellent actor.

After all the Hoffman talk, I just had an epiphany realizing one of his best roles. Not the greatest movie by a stretch, but funny, and he was probably funnier than Ben Stiller. As per before, some of his best shit was his supporting roles.

And that role was him playing Sandy Lyle in Along Came Polly

Looks like one of his last movies will be one directed by Anton Corbijn.

He's got three more Hunger Games movies to appear in. Dunno how they'll plug that.

There are only two Hunger Games movies left. He finished shooting for the first Mockingjay and they're doing some rewrites for the second.

Ah, I thought there was a Catching Fire Pt.2 for some reason. Thanks for clarifying.
