Now Tarako Isono (best known for Maruko in Chibi Maruko-chan) kicked the bucket. First Akira Toriyama, now her?

Incredible, his death came out of nowhere, and hell he was barely older than my folks  I always loved his fanciful mechanical designs and wacky characters from the dragonball days, it's needless to say that he played such a huge role in my childhood and shaping what I thought was cool. What sad news, I feel like this mangaka legends are extraordinarily fragile, or something. Christ.

awww nuts. Such terrible news. I know I'm not opening this thread and expecting to get cheered up, but jeeez, both Toriyama and Isono back to back. :(

Even though I'm not caught up on Dragon Ball Super, and it wasn't really holding my attention the same way the first two series did, there was an important, distinct "comfort food" quality to it that pains me to think has disappeared from the world. This incredibly inventive and creative guy who really knew how to build a universe. But I have no doubt that he wouldn't want us to be sad, he's probably out there somewhere smiling about how much happiness he left the world

Louis Gossett Jr.

One of my favorite movies as a kid was Firewalker, the LGJ and Chuck Norris flick. It was one of those kind of movies that I would ask my mom to rent if I got the flu and I'd just watch it like 5 or 6 times. I can't say what it was exactly, but it seemed like they just had so much fun making that movie together and they were really friends, albeit reluctantly.

It's sad that he's gone. What a great personality and so much life brought to the silver screen.

Ah man. ala Scatman Crothers, one of those veteran actors I'd later learn had a storied life and career, yet I know most fondly from my days as a GI Joe/Transformers-lovin' preschooler. Image I always associate the Iron Eagle movies with our comfy local "tape club" of yore. (rows and rows of pirated satellite TV! Image) Always a mainstay in the Hollywood Features shelf. There was a sense of great tradition by the time I was in highscool and they were up to Iron Eagle V. Image

Another death that occurred was former senator and anti-videogame critic Joe Lieberman.
He was known for his stance on games like Doom, Lethal Enforcers, Mortal Kombat, and most infamously, Night Trap.
Without him the ESRB wouldn’t be around.

Being on twitter to chat with the other AI nerds in this age of the AI apocalypse.... I've been exposed to some names in the "trending" column, and I always dread what it portends. It really was the shittiest way to learn about Akira passing. I'll be glad when all things are over and I won't have to visit that site anymore.

One thing I learned recently was pulling out TNF-R from the bloodstream as a treatment for many tumors. And it's really hard to find anything about it... the original study was like ten years ago (youtube warning: cancer), you'd think there'd be more out there than this NaNotics startup aiming to do the same thing, but better.

It's a bummer alright. Dragonball was huge source of joy for so many people, and I always found it comforting that he was still out there cranking out stuff. 😥

Ozzie not looking good these days. Made me think of Ronnie, whose work I liked a lot more. Listened to some of the old songs. Can't believe I never saw the Holy Diver music video.... No Youtube back then...

In September 2003, Dio accidentally severed his thumb during a gardening accident when a heavy garden gnome fell onto it. Dio was concerned he would no longer be able to do his signature "devil's horns" hand gesture, but a doctor managed to re-attach it

Fuckin' cancer. It remains one of the top killers in the United States, ranking just ahead of OJ Simpson.

Mitsumi Inomata died on March 10 at age 63. Was surprised that wasn't already posted.

For those who don't know, she did character design for some Tales of games such as Berseria and also various classic anime.

I used to listen to Holy Diver and Number of The Beast on my grandma's record player when I stayed at her's. She was a devout Irish Catholic with pictures of Jesus on the walls and had holy water founts in her house, so I used to get a kick out of that as a greasy 7 y/o metal kid. I went from Deep Purple (used play drums along to Speed King) to Rainbow and then DIO.

Steven mentioned it in a sub sentence in a thread in shmups chat. I didn't even know her by name before he brought the news. For shame, I really liked many of her designs in Berseria and Graces.

Also her first name was Mutsumi.

OMG it's the best. It was so fucking great when they still had a print version of it. I used to count the days when a new one would hit the racks and I'd have a fresh copy to read on the 6 train, and share with my scrappy band of cohorts in the coat check. sigh

That brief moment when they had a budget and started making TV shows was the real golden age. Everyone's favorite shows: Lake Dredge Appraisal, Porkin' Across America, Sex House, etc etc. Then the money from the Dodge Dart sponsorship ended and now they're on life support.

There was a moment there were I was able to delude myself into thinking it might be possible they'd become a real news channel one day. With their own 24/7 channel on cable and everything. Sigh...

TED talks always annoyed the hell out of me. These shallow presentations meant to instill a sense of possibility and wonder in venture capital types, to hustle a piece of their cash. Very light on the nuts and bolts of actually making shit a reality. Gives the viewer at home an unearned sense of accomplishment. (Man Carrying Thing illustrates the two basic kinds of presentations.)

This old Onion Talk seems to get increasingly relevant by the day.
