Damaged Sony BVM-20F1U, Need Help/Advice

Post by panzeroceania »

So I just received a Sony BVM-20F1U from an ebay merchant today. I picked up an RS232 cable, power cable and hooked it all up, I had to change it from YPbPr to RGB, and set it to the correct sync setting, but after that most everything was correct, except one thing...

There are huge rainbow bands in the bottom left and bottom right corners. of course using the degauss button does nothing for this.

I was wondering if there was some sort of magnetic wand, or some setting or something I could do to correct things. I did just receive this, and the merchant has more, so worst case scenario I should be able to ask for a replacement unit, it wasn't packaged very well for shipping at all. Does this look like something a local repair shop could correct?

In any case, here are some pictures I took with a Sega Genesis Model 2, PC Engine Super CD 2, and Nintendo 64

Would you guys recommend using something like this?

Update:

I contacted the seller, and he says it looks like a degaussing issue, and recommended using a degaussing wand. Would you guys recommend something like the degausing coil I listed above in the amazon link? or one of the straight wands? I'm assuming you keep the CRT powered on when you degauss it, and you degauss the whole screen thoroughly while keeping other electrical equipment out of range, right?

Was that monitor "just" packaged in the cardboard box? lol

That wand will be OK but you need to know how to use one. You don't just switch it on and wave it over the screen.

That doesn't look like a gaussing issue to me and from what you've said about packaging it may have been permanently damaged. The BVMs should have degauss coils in them anyway and they're not the sort of thing to go bad.

You don't need a wand to degauss if you've got some other tools to hand - http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=208894 - give them a try for no money first to establish whether the monitor itself is screwed or not.

another thing I forgot to mention is there is a buzz coming from the BVM, not earth shatteringly loud, but still loud enough that it sounds not QUITE right, I have a few PVMs and know what the regular sound of a powered CRT sounds like.

I tried the Power Drill, to no avail, following the same instructions several people have posted as far as using a coil. I happen to have a PVM with a broken tube (assessed by a repair technician) that I've had for a long time and it's only good for parts, so I may try making a homebrew coil from that, and see how it fairs, but at this point I'm not too optimistic. I'll give it a good shake for the sellers sake, but I'm thinking I'm going to need a replacement.

My BVM buzzes as well. I have asked a few others, and it appears to be normal.

Was the monitor insured? That looks badly damaged.

Is the "damage" that bad though? It seems like the picture is still stable even if the colours are off.

I would guess if the picture remains stable then the unit should be in a much better shape to be repaired than one where the picture is unstable to boot.

That kind of effect looks like the thing that the rings on the yoke are for. I think its called purity.

Yeah, while it's currently not useful at all, because the whole point of getting this BVM is getting superior picture quality to my already amazing PVMs, it is amazing how good of shape it is in.

The picture is stable with the Sega Genesis, everything is fine and functions except the front bottom part of the bezel is cracked on both sides, and the obvious rainbow effects. I'm sure the unit can be salvaged by a repairman, I am a little miffed about the really poor shipping job though. Even if it can be fixed it won't be the in good condition unit that he was advertising.

waiting on getting a powerful degaussing coil and if that doesn't work then I'll probably ask for a replacement unit. Hopefully it can be fixed by having a repairman work with the yoke, etc. I'd hate to see the set go completely to waste. We'll see what happens.

I wouldn't be so sure. The reason I said to try degaussing without paying for anything is because that looks exactly like shadow mask damage from the set being dropped, which is unrepairable.

Look familiar?

Seller needs to provide a replacement and pack it properly!

I was pretty sure it was worse than degaussing, I got the coil because I wanted to have one around anyways, and to so there was no question.

I tried a power drill before I ordered the coil but it didn't have much effect. When I got the coil of course it was very powerful and I went at it for awhile and it got pretty hot, but to no avail. I contacted the seller again, saying that it had to be more than something a degauss could fix since I had tried the coil. He said he would send a replacement so I'm awaiting that now. I did mention using a lot of packing and boxing it well. He's hoping the next one will be in good condition so I can see what Fudoh has been raving about :D
