Got an HDMI adapter for iDevices today (mainly for XMBC, Netflix, etc when on travel), but got curious and hooked it up to my tated HDTV and fired up some iOS Cave shmups. Actually looks quite nice and plays really well. Video of me trying out iOS Dodonpachi Resurrection HD.
It's actually quite awesome with this interface. Since you're not looking at your device, your fingers don't block your view and it's much easier to see the gaps between the bullets. The graphics, especially on Espgaluda II HD look almost as good as the xbox 360 version. You can minimize the area for your fingers such that the game is nearly full screen.

Interesting novelty if you happen to have some sort of tv-out cable and a tate-able display. By the way, the iPad is jailbroken and using Cydia's DisplayOut app. DisplayOut has all sorts of options and sliders so you can set whatever source at it's native aspect ratio or stretch it out to hell like a bastard.

What type of iPad are you currently using? Sounds interesting hooking it up to a proper HDTV setup indeed. Could this HDTV output work with the newer 5th gen iPod Touch setup or not?
My ViewSonic PC monitor has various inputs such as traditional VGA, DVI and HDMI. So it can double as a 1080p HDTV monitor as well.
On the other hand, my Sharp Aquos HDTV has the whole she-bang of various inputs: RCA composite video, S-Video, Component Video, HDMI, DVI, analog RCA audio input jacks, TOSlink input & output, and lastly, even an audio output port for a dedicated subwoofer. Most HDTVs sold nowdays don't have all the above assorted video and/or audio inputs and outputs (making them cheaper to buy), trying to buy a new HDTV a hassle if you want all the necessary video inputs. It's a good idea to check the backside of such new HDTVs to confirm it has all the inputs you want/need before buying it firsthand.
I recall walking into a Magnolia high-end A/V store inside my local Best Buy store and absolutely no sales associate acknowledged me nor did even bother to ask if I wanted any help. I do know that they sell such high-end A/V gear. I'd have to assume that they don't want my business and they've lost a potential customer if they do that to certain folks (on a daily basis). I'm quite sure that the Magnolia sales associates work on comission as well (even the Good Guys/CompUSA & Circuit City employees worked on comission in the A/V department).
It's well known that any new high-tech A/V gear introduced at whatever the manufacturer sets the asking MSRP, it'll always be at a 50% markup above the wholesale price that the retailer gets it at. It's a given alrighty. But the potential customer can always dicker down the asking MSRP if he or she wants a better bargin on it -- talking to a store manager to reduce the MSRP price, usually, does the trick. The golden rule is: if they want your business, they'll accomodate to your lower price (as the asking MSRP isn't set in stone anyways).

Re: Just messing around with some iOS Cave shmups & a tated
It's an iPad2 jailbroken on 5.1.1 I believe. Well it's especially great if you're in a hotel room or some place where you don't have any proper sources connected to the TV. It's a lot quicker to setup vs. a laptop to a TV. So I use it for Netflix, XMBC, Orb streaming from my main home PC, games/emulation, etc.
Well you have to be jailbroken to be able to output anything. Otherwise it's up to the app itself if it supports tv-out.
There are all types of tv-out cables for iPad/iPhone (composite, component, VGA, HDMI). You will have to check if the cable supports which version of iDevice you have. I've actually got all those cables so I'm ready for whatever TV/Monitor/CRT is available when not at home.
I think it depends on the class of TV you buy in terms of what outputs are offered... although DVI is rare these days period. I think it's better to just offer more HDMI inputs because you can always just use a DVI-to-HDMI cable. Low end will be scant on inputs, mid-range pretty good and high-end will probably offer the most flexibility. Yeah Magnolia in Best Buy isn't as high-end as they think in terms of product and service... just a "me too" attempt for the high-end segment.

DVI is old (but not that old) and terrible for various reasons, so no great loss there. Being able to get some kind of television output is a nice thing indeed ^_~

That looks friggin' great. Does this output adapter work on iPhones as well? I never play the CAVE ports in my phone due to fingers getting all up in the game.

Yeah, it works on the iPhone as well. I'm jailbroken on my 4S and on 5.1.1 on there as well I believe. I usually use my phone on CRTs (via composite, component, or component to VGA to BNC) for quick emulation with a bluetooth control pad.emphatic wrote:That looks friggin' great. A little more messing around today...
Blutrol app + bluetooth gamepad on Giana Sisters and Shantae works great. No cumbersome touchscreen controls needed, even if that's all it natively offers. Unfortunately can't do that with games that don't use a virtual/pad joystick.

Fix it Felix Jr!

Just got an iPad->VGA cable. It doesn't seem to work with my iPhone and with the iPad, only horizontal apps are full screen (CAVE games are YOKO).
None of my iDevices are Jailbroken, is that the reason maybe?
