some random questions concerning tate

Post by professor ganson »

Finally got permission to buy a cheap tv to tate, so I have a bunch of questions.

1. Favorite game to play in tate mode?

2. Are there cases where the option to play in tate is somewhat hidden?

3. Anyone have a list of Saturn/PS1 games that offer tate?

4. Does anyone else have the problem that left and right portions of the game are cut off from view? The problem is esp. bad for me with Trizeal and Battle Garegga.

May think of more soon. Thanks in advance for responses.

1. Definitely Gunbird 2. Definitely have to play it in tate.

2. Raiden Project US version? It's so hidden that you need a Gameshark to unlock the tate, IIRC from the thread on it. I still have to try this.

4. That's my TV while playing GB 2. I also have a cheap TV to play tate on. But for me only the left portion is cut off slightly, which I am used to by now.

gunbird 2 is completely class in tate (although i play better in yoko for some reason).

conerning your image getting sheared. you might look into whether your tv has a Display Setup mode. my 20" trinitron had the same problems until i fiddled with the options a bit to get the full display.
I have no sig whatsoever.

1) Yeah, Gunbird 2 looks much better in tate. I'd also suggest the Saturn DDP port; worlds of difference, if you can't afford the PS version (or so I've heard).

2) Dunno if you have a PS2, but not long ago someone here was wondering if either of the Psyvariar games (Medium Unit or Revision) had it; they do, but you have to push "select" on the title screen to get to the options menu.

3) Nearly every import vertical PS and Saturn shmup has it, to the best of my knowledge; it'd probably be easier to list which ones don't have it (most domestic releases, in my experience anyways). Offhand, I don't think that either the US or Japan PS Geki-Oh games have it, though the Saturn Shienryu port does; I also think that the US Strikers 1945 II release lacks it. There are others, but those are all I know offhand.

4) In my case I can adjust the width/height on my monitor, but on a TV unless the game itself has a screen adjust I'm not sure what you'd do to fix that.

Hi, Professor Ganson, a list of PSX/Saturn shooters in tate format wouldn't really be necessary since as long as you get the import version, and it's a vert, it will have tate unless it's a verizontal game like Radiant Silvergun or Soukyugurentai. As for the image being cut off on your TV, have your exact TV model ready and look up the "service mode" for it in a search engine such as Google. This will allow you to change the display settings (width, height, etc.); just be careful and it may be helpful to write down the default settings in case anything goes wrong.

Thanks for reminding me about the Saturn version of Shienryu. That was the first game I got for the Saturn. EDIT: I was hoping to play Souky and RSG in tate, but I realized, on reflection, that they must have been made for a horizontal screen, like Giga Wing.

Yeah, DDP and SnS II are the games which have improved the most for me so far. SnS II on the Gamecube looks unbelievable in tate, definitely much better than on PS2.

Excellent, I don't yet have any Psyvariar games, and have been thinking about getting one. Good to know.

1) Worlds of difference in any game with tate, really. :D

3) True indeed, the Agetec release of Strikers 1945 II (titled Strikers 1945) omits tate mode.

From what I hear, Mushihime-sama sucks in Yoko. ESPgaluda and DOJ as well don't look as good.
