Rebel moon - netflix
Its an ok story mired by stupid over stylized fighting. Its a tour de force on special effects though. If you like shows where death kills go slow mo, a woman ambushed by 15 enemies runs through laser shots like it was a day in the park then go for it. Its too unbelievable for me to take it seriously.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Finally got around to finishing West World. A well tread sci-fi/horror theme (A.I bad?/what happen if achieve sentience?), but a rather nicely budgeted and cast expression of it.
I really loved the version of arch Misanthrope William - The Man In Black instigating a global Battle Royale which put an end to humanity and his little quip, calling out a sniper for being a 'camper' before executing him. William's copy got to do what William would have loved to, but couldn't. A little part of us gamers is William. Solid 8/10 would watch again.

Saw premiere episode of True Detective: Night Country last night. Might be good, but I don't trust this series. Season 3 was propped up as a "return to form" just as this season is, but I thought it was meh by the end. Fool me once...

I'm on the fence. Wasn't dazzled by the premier. I'll stick w/ it though.Lord British wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 3:42 pm Saw premiere episode of True Detective: Night Country last night. There's not one moment of season 1 that is "alright", though. I'm basing my bar off of that.

Sadly I want to see how it gets. So far, it's extremely flat. I can't believe it got good reviews. One writer for Forbes is clearly a straight shooter though, and is calling it out for all if it's VERY unsubtle... well everything.AGermanArtist wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 10:40 am True Detective 4

Finished up the season five of Fargo. Really enjoyed this one. Brings back the quirky edge of your seat feel of the earlier seasons. Awesome stuff.
I've been watching an episode of Julia here and there. I guess the setting is what sells it for me. Huge Mad Men vibes.

Outside of andor, succession s4 and watching wrestling, I haven’t been watching too much the past few months but I watched the first two episodes of the masters of the air over the weekend and now I’m totally bummed that I can’t binge the whole season.
I’ve watched band of brothers about a half dozen times and the pacific twice, and this one seems to be on par so far

I'm not doing Fargo until I can give it the time it deserves. Hopefully soon.

In 2011, Fox aired a show called Terra Nova. About 97% of an episode was boring people being boring in a jungle. The other 3% was CGI dinosaurs eating leaves in the distant background. It was dreadful.
You expect more from a concept of "time travel + dinosaurs". Fox killed many, many sci-fi shows that didn't deserve it just because they had high budgets. Terra Nova is the only one I remember 100% deserving it.
I bring this show up because AI Lost Media constantly throws ideas out there, and today's example is an interesting angle to take with Dinosaurs. Rubber suits, greenscreens, some out of place humans in a dinosaur dimension... you'd have a masterpiece that could survive not getting cancelled during its first episode. Maybe it gets cancelled on the third or fourth episode. It doesn't even exist and I still feel obligated to give the first episode a shot.
... just that word, "angle". A concept I think is really alien to the suits in charge. While wrestling carnies always knew you have to keep coming up with new bullshit to keep the pigeons entertained.

arrested detective
Came to Arrested Development Season 4 original non-remix (DVD release).
Heeding GP's warning going in, I am now down to the last 3 eps. Hmm. Mhmm. Where to find fault? To me, it's not that the band of lunatics was broken up, and characters got their own adventures loosley crossing paths with each other. I think that move is all right, since coming back after cancelation and proceeding unflexed in a changed media environment would be more sell-out than, er, getting picked up by the Netflix mothership. No, change welcomed here. It's more that how the shuffling of the eps is handled. Certain characters get double time while others (the kids: George Michael, Maeby, yes, Buster) get the end of this stick. While some are sharp as ever (Walter's L1 ep: "queen b." sharp as edge), others seem to be patchworked from the cutting room floor to get the required numbers. Howled out loud when Gob does the Heimlich on Tony Wonder. So yeah, I wanted to know how they followed up with, and I seem now to know how that goes. Could be way worse, could be better still. Get away...Stay away...Getaway...
True Detctive Season 3
3 eps in. Strong set of basicly all things. Ali leading, and dang-it-all Dorff not fumbling next to. Who'd thunk?

Re: TV you've just watched
I watched the original release of arrested development s4 (the non-remixed? however you'd refer to the one that isn't in sequential order) and I still haven't worked up the desire to rewatch the arranged version even though it's probably way better

what's the most important thing? a) breakfast b) family c) privacy d) hot cousin
What are your feelings for that? Too much of a mess? Or a drop in quality? Didn't feel right to break them up?

Re: TV you've just watched
the original seasons did flashbacks in a much more succinct purposeful way, but I don't recall it being used as a primary storytelling mechanic. season 4 felt very disjointed in comparison. to your point, disproportionate screentime was a culprit and amplified that feeling. on a somewhat positive note, it may have helped the jokes hit and made it seem as smart as seasons 1-3, but it still just felt off. granted, I haven't watched it since it aired back in 2013, and I owe it a revisit. I don't think I was aware that they released a 5th season either...
I was hoping for more of something like party down season 3, where it picked up where it left off in stride

Tried Rebel Moon. I thought it started off really promising. I wanted it to play out with the farmers struggling to survive this oppressive force and internal conflict. It just turns into this generic flashy special effects movie after the intro. Didn't really care for it at all after that. Stealing the cantina from Star Wars is just incredibly lazy. Thought the ending was especially disappointing and predictable.
Re: TV you've just watched
S4 Arrested Development did have some big issues. The fragmented cast did pretty big damage to the feeling of a cohesive group of people. I think there's one scene in the parent's house where they're supposed to be in the same room, and it's very obvious that they're not.
Some things feel like they would have been cut if it wasn't online, or that they would have gone to a B plot if they had other actors available to use for it. It's easy on the internet to be less judicious with time. (An old joke in things like Commentary!. "Yeah I understand my song was cut because there wasn't enough time... on the internet...")
But there was still some good bits and that's more than we could say about Zombie Simpsons. Terry Crews absolutely killed it, as always.
r.i.p. Herman Cain.
(Freakin' Fantastic Four musical.... I only recently noticed that Cross was involved with the original Tenacious D mini-series, so if you hate or love the D, you can blame him for it....)

I really liked Dorf channeling Nick Nolte.

Reacher Season 2 has to have the sharpest drop off in show quality between seasons I've ever seen. The first one was great but I couldn't even push myself to finish the second.

Re: TV you've just watched
I went back to an oldie, Dark Matter.
Once it was the best Syfy show on the channel.
The show opens where 6 passengers and an android wake up out of stassis (or in the case of the android rebooted/reset) and have lost their memories. They name themselves 1 to 6 based on the order of them waking up. They quickly find they are on board a military ship in the middle of space. As the show ep1 progresses they learn they are mercenaries, when shot upon for no reason they start to learn of their sinister past. Why were their memories erased? Who's shooting at them? The mystery unfolds.
Its a great show, Syfy cancelled it after 3 seasons because it wasn't one of their home grown productions and they wanted their own content on the channel. It ends up being like the "A team" in space. Lots of action, twists and turns, guns and martial arts feature throughout. Add a bit of "Lost" and "Expanse" in there, with a good bit of humour and colourful characters, it was a really good show. Cancelled after 3 seasons, it does end abruptly with no continuation, but its worth a whirl if your into this kind of thing.

what the (bleep)
Addendum to the end of AD S4: the son punching the father smack in the face, the father takes it like a Rocky Balboa in the 10th. Seemed like open family abuse. I don't find that funny. I don't find a pie to the face funny, though I would prefer to watch that. Wow. Now I've seen it all. The exclusive S5 not an option for me.
Whateven mean, though?!
Re: TV you've just watched
I've binged 15 seasons of Supernatural - only one episode to go. It's pretty gory for a networked show and lots of fun IMHO. Not surprised the creator went on to make The Boys.

Binged Boardwalk Empire having not seen it since it was initially broadcast. There's not a lot to be said really other than it's exceptional TV, perfectly cast and every scene looks like it cost an absolute fortune. I recently rewatched All Quiet on The Western Front which inspired this binge with its gritty depiction of WW1 which reminded me of Jimmy Darmody and Richard Harrow and their story arch in Boardwalk.
I only have one problem with the show in its entirety and that's the season 4 undercover detective and Gillian Darmody arch - this is the weakest. There is no reality where this works, it was clunky and ill-conceived and the writers should've known better. That aside, everything is great. Everyone's a cunt, everyone's got an angle and everyone's cumming in everyone else. Your great grandmother was probably a sly ho.

Finished True Detective - Night Country
Pretty happy about this season. The attempts to make this season more like the first season worked for the most part, but it could have been done without the spirals and the mention of the Tuttles. I don't agree that it's as Woke Detective as the review-bombing MAGA-hats are saying, but the Cleaning Lady Eskimo Lesbian Book Group stuffed into the mobile home at the end felt a little too pander-y in its execution. Overall though I loved the feel, the atmosphere, I was ok with the supernatural slant (but disappointed with the S1 tie-in), and the two leads carried it fine. Should have been longer though. It puzzles me to see people laud Fargo so much when I personally find it unwatchable. Different strokes....
