picture squeezed and doubled...?!

Post by ryu »

just got a pgm 200 r1 /w scaler and have been fiddling around with it. feeding 480p through component results in this:

anything i can do about this?

btw anyone know if the scaler is worth anything for having 480i material display in 480p? it seemed to look fine when i just played a bit of 480i material, but i can't really tell if i can't properly play in 480p (yet). :|

Is the scaler module supposed to accept 480p via component ?

That's the same picture I get when I fed 480i to my PGM (without scaler) module. Or 480p to a 480i-only input.

What's your 480p source ? What happens in you feed 480i instead ?

don't know.

well, that way it really seems like the scaler doesn't take 480p through component.

source is a fat jp ps2 and a wii. both have the same picture-doubling when feeding 480p.
when i feed 480i i get a deinterlaced 480p picture

so if it doesn't take 480p through component, is there a way to go from component to rgbhv or vga without any expensive scaling devices?
but then i might get a good scaler someday anyways for deinterlacing 480i stuff. unless the pgm's scaler's good enough for that though.

edit:: yeah the deinterlacing of the scaler is crap

I haven't tried the included PGM scaler board, but it's likely doing field scaling, which has little to no lag, but also only shows little detail. Generally ok for fast action games, but sub-par for anything slower (RPGs, Puzzle).

You need a transcoder (YUV to VGA). The HDBoxPro (and clones) can act as a transcoder. Nothing cheaper I could think of.

is it possible that a pgm equipped witha scaler module won't support its original inputs anymore? i can't seem to find a setting in the menu that would enable them. (i'm feeding 480p)

maybe there are different scaler boards available, but the official 201 one is supposed to accept everything up to 85khz. That includes even high-res pc resolutions.

Yeah IT pretty much does That. The scaler's vent is kinda noisy though, so i've been thinking it might be worth trying to remove the scaler. However i wasn't able to get a picture from feeding 480p to the monitor's normal bnc inputs...it actually seems like the menu only let's me choose from the scaler'sinputs.

I would remove it then. I don't see why the original BNC inputs shouldn't work once the scaler board is removed.

Alright, guess ill just try That. Btw. I've gota wird issue with the pgm's amp. When. I have it Output even slightly loud sounds, it will cause some sort of waving of the picture which increases in strength according to the volume of the sounds. If i have it output loud sounds for too long, the amp will male a loud noise and shut itself off. Any ideas what this could be about?

getting the scaling board out was surprisingly easy. now i'm getting sound by using the monitors standard inputs, but no picture at all. :? it's all black, like i wasn't inputting anything at all. i even made sure that the hdboxpro is set to output 640x480 lines.

my guess regarding the amp issue is that the scaling board doesn't connect to the monitors own amp, but rather has its own, weaker, amp that can't handle much.

have you exchanged the two sync wires ? Usually black's H-Sync and white's V-Sync, but I've seen so many cables where it was the other way around and even contrary to the labeling on the cable itself, so make sure to try it.
