Turn-based strategy games, anyone?

Post by Krimzon Kitzune »

I've been getting into them as of late, and I think it'd be good to have a thread for this sort of thing (assuming that there isn't one already).

Here's a few freebies I'd like to show you guys:

The Battle for Wesnoth

Titans of Steel: Warring Suns

Strat (trial version - single player only) - Worth mentioning that I've made the character sprites for this one (animations coming soon). 8)

Let's discuss or at least share/link some of them (trial/freeware only, please)!

Maybe we should get some games going sometime?

War on Folvos is a pretty good panzer general-alike with a sci-fi setting.

Alien Assault is a fun freeware computer version of the WH40K board game "Space Hulk"

Flotilla is a simple but fun 3D turn based space ship tactical game that's a little too hipster twee for its own good.

UFO: Alien Invasion is a freeware WIP clone of X-Com that looks promising.

The battles are in pausable real-time, but Strange Adventures in Infinite Space is an amazing freeware Star Trek-like boardgame perfect for coffee breaks.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I may be used to real-time strategy games, but I am also used to turn-based strategy as well. The Nintendo Wars series is one of them in most Nintendo consoles.

The rarest one I've got so far is Muteki-Oh Tri-Zenon. I do have a physical copy of this one, but I played it through emulation.

I used to play a lot of Tactics Arena Online, it's a great medieval-themed strategy game. The basic account is free to create and you can play as much as you want.

OP already knows this, but I'm a huge fan of TBS games.

I like Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, HoM&M, Civilization, Tactics Ogre, FFT, Yggdra Union, etc. etc.

I got a friend of mine Path of Radiance for Christmas, and we've been having a lot of fun playing it together.

Have the Japanese made any turn-based strategy/tactics games devoid of grinding since the original Shining Force? Romance of the Three Kingdoms perhaps?
I recommend Disciples II: Rise of the Elves and HoM&M3 with add-ons. Both should be dirt cheap by now. Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic had plenty of cool ideas going for it, but the interface wasn't great.

Fire Emblem has no grinding. You can't replay missions, so you can only choose which characters to distribute experience to.

Of course, the games are unplayable in my eyes due to permadeath: not fond of retrying every mission after the loss of a single unit. The original FFT handled the concept much better, and you could create new units anyway.

Good topic, every now and then I get in the mood for some strategy games and get promptly bummed out because I can't find ones that would really grab me.

Some that I've found...

Advanced Strategic Command

Crimson Fields

PG Forever

10 min Space Strategy - I've actually played this a bit, it's a simplified 4X-game. Pretty fun, though kinda easy if even I can beat it.

I tried out War on Folvos and liked it, maybe I'll get the full version.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

For me, breakable weapons is what makes it unplayable for me. I reached a point in Sacred Stones where I was running out of weapons and running out of money to buy them. The only way to make money is in the Arenas but then you can easily lose a character forever in there. Eventually I had to stop playing.

Advance Wars has absolutely no grinding. Definitely worth checking out if you've got a DS or GBA.

@ Fire Emblem sucks comments: The Arena is the only location in the game where you can farm money and exp. It's extremely dangerous for a reason - to cap the limit of resources that's available so you can't grind forever. In other words, it's actually a gamble. You have to know when to quit, or else avoid it entirely. You don't need to visit the Arena to complete the game, so if it frequently kills your characters, just ignore it.

As for permadeath, I actually like that element of the game. The game feels satisfying when you win, because there are actual consequences for making mistakes and failing.

Breakable weapons don't bother me. You get more than enough weapons to finish the game, unless you waste all of them grinding endlessly (only in Sacred Stones... -_-...). It introduces an interesting element of resource management because you must save your best weapons for when you actually need them (as opposed to using legendary weapons to slaughter fodder enemies).

Does valkyria chronicles count?
The universe is neither hostile nor friendly, simply indifferent.

Even without my umbillical cable attached I still have over 12,000 plates of fortified armour AND I have my AT Field! There's NO WAY I can lose!!

Turn based is the only way I play a strategy game. I just discovered that after buying Starcraft 2, LOL.

Advance Wars is my favorite. Nothing to annoy you, just tactics, variety, and fun.

Six-Gun Shootout and Breach 2 are both great. Breach 2 more for the map maker than anything else. And if you haven't played SGS, you're missing something unique and with a very detailed combat system.

Well, there is a new X-Com coming out (no, I'm not talking about the cover TPS... thing). It's being developed by Firaxis. First screens are here. They have mentioned multiple times that the combat will all be turn-based.

I haven't played any of the earlier X-COM games, but I've often heard that they are good. This will be my first experience with the series, and I'm looking forward to it.

Well, you don't have to retry because a unit dies. They always give you far more than you can use. Just let a few die and keep playing.

In fact, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon actually rewards you with bonus stages (that contain bonus characters) for getting surplus characters killed off.

Fire Emblem is my favorite gaming series by a good margin, but I'll admit it has some weaknesses. It can be frustrating when you've laid out the perfect strategy and you have to restart because of a low-probability mishap. The series is best when it has a very hard setting, a scoring system to limit boss-milking, and no online shops. Without these, the challenge is often lacking. I don't much care for hidden items that one needs a guide-- or crazy luck-- to discover. The games have an ok look, but I never bother to follow the stories. I much prefer cute witches carrying on about nothing much, like in Luminous Arc. But even with all this said, Fire Emblem is king of tbs games, imho. If only that latest remake for the DS had been localized! We really missed out on that one.

Yeah, I agree. I might just break down and import it. DS games are region free, if I recall correctly.

Huge pet peeve of mine when developers choose to localize average or bad games, then inexplicably ignore some of the better titles =P.

Ultralate to the party but I've been tearing up* some Battle for Wesnoth lately. Heard so much about it for years, but finally gave it a shot this week. I'm hooked.

*Actually, it''s tearing me up. I'm stuck on A Tale of Two Brothers: The Chase. Freaking elves. D:

Oh, and so much love for the genre, especially X-Com and Jagged Alliance 2. Very deep and incredibly rewarding.
