The Esp... games more or less do this. It's not bad at all IMO. I would not mind a shmup where you have health if it replaces lifestock but you do not respawn and lose your weapons when getting hit.

...Which makes it a purely cosmetic difference. Some good shmups have turned away from the 1-hit + 1-life, model without compromising the genre's core values. Deathsmiles, IIRC, takes half a heart away for getting hit by enemy, and a full heart for bullet collision, unless you have a half-heart in stock. This encourages point-blanking rather elegantly, IMO. Others games, like 1944 (indeed most 194X titles) use a lifebar and it doesn't wreck the game. At most it's an annoyance because it's hard for a new player to tell how much life he has left. Then you have games like Dimahoo, and Compile shmups which will knock down your powerups before killing you. These aren't broken either.

1-hit deaths are certainly the most successful model, but alternatives shouldn't be discounted out of hand. You've got a few famous & horrendous uses of lifebars (Tyrian being the granddad), which have unjustly lowered the discussion of the mechanic to "lifebars sux lol." It's kind of a shame because on this forum you'll often see new games posted with an immediate dismissal of "has lifebars, won't play." A decent rule of thumb, yes; a valid generalization, no.

It's not a cosmetic difference. You have to be in an alternative and limited mode. It's a bomb gauge. Similar thing goes for Akai Katana.

^^
I totally agree with you on that. In Guwange it feels nice as well I think.

If you had a lifebar in say something like DDP but would not die if hit and thus no need to respawn, I think this would be good for the flow of the game. You could still be punished by getting your multiplier crapped and whatnot.

I did not mean the bar in Galuda, but more like how you do not explode and respawn but just get a bit of a knockdown.

Dimahoo powers you down after a hit only when you get hit by a same element bullet(not sure if it kills you at zero power)

Psikyo games also power you down after charging enemies instead of killing you

and in Daioh you can't run into enemies because they would pointblank you before you can do so

That's because you picked up an invisible 1-up and made the rank bonkers.

LIES! In Giga Wing you go kablooey if you run into enemies. Dunno about the other GW games. Mars Matrix has no enemy collision.

It's just GigaWing where you can get hit by crashing into enemies.

In Dodonpachi 5, there is no invicibility period between getting hit with armor, small shots do .5 bar, larger shots do 1 bar, crashing into small enemies does 2 bars, some attacks and crashing into bosses kills you instantly, regardless of armor.

Oh god. He's back!

And here was I thinking that you guys already scared him away.

@Paradigm

You should keep in mind, that as long as he is not banned he can make new threads and this way he keeps his ideas in one thread or two...

I'm still not convinced our new friend KiethSomataw99 is a troll. Like Skykid says in this guy's 'My Ideas' thread, I think KiethSomataw99's just a kid (OK - he said he's 18, so I should really say 'youthful') with an over enthusiastic (or overly innocent or overinflated) sense of his own ideas and the purpose of this forum.

I'll talk all this over with the other mods now, and if action needs to be taken, we'll take it.

And, while he's still here I should do the decent thing and not talk about KiethSomataw99 in the third person.

KiethSomataw99 - I think you'd get a more positive reaction from everyone if you avoided spam-posting your muses on your ideas for sequels to well-known shmups. It's been entertaining for sure, and once in a while there's some great threads here where we all post tongue-in-cheek shmup concepts so you've every right to do it occasionally, but you're getting a little heavy with it early on.

Play your cards right, and you might even stay around, learn some crap and have a laugh.

I would really like that you guys don't ban him. I mean seriously, he hasn't insulted anybody, his threads ARE shmups related and so far he only made one thread that I would say was a bad idea and that was the DS 3 one.

This thread wasn't even created by him. I know some people here are afraid about the quality of the forum as a whole, but as long as he keeps his ideas (which are really funny, imo) in one thread, I don't see why he should deserve a ban. But this is not my decision and I certainly can understand why some dudes here don't welcome him.

This.

Having said that though Teuful in Blau, the "quality of the forum as a whole" has been generally a few stairs above 4chan level for a while now so whoever's worrying should've been worrying a few years ago. There's a thread in Off Topic dedicated to this too.

@KiethSomataw99:
If you're serious about these ideas make them yourself. I recommend Game Maker 8.

And maybe stay out of the Development subforum until you have one of your 'ideas' in an actual program of some description.

While not as advanced, Dezaemon Plus! is easier to get your hands on (~$5 on PSN) and comes with a handy little guide that tells you what most everything in the menus do. Blast Works for Wii is a good starting point too, although you'll have to work a bit harder to get anything that resembles a traditional 2D shooter out of it.

All are fine tests of creativity and perseverance, though.

I have the idea that the Bosses for Dodonpachi 5 stages 1-7 are the spirit sons, basically, similar to the element daughters except they are different and all are male. They arrived to earth after some time after receiving a signal released by the destruction of Shooty. They want to find and destroy the pilots or their successors and terrorize earth. They are Blazer, ETHEREAL, Shadowedge, INFECTION, Tsunami, Hell's Maw, and Steel Nightmare. Order is in stages and they speak the language according to the country they are in. At the end of the game, after the player defeats Perfect Hibachi, Element Daughter PERFECT appears and tells the player that after her destruction, her spirit was captured and melded into a new Hibachi to form the Ultimate War machine and why the Spirit Sons invaded. She also says that it was a mistake to challenge the earth and feel the wrath of the pilots, for all the daughters. She then wishes for an era of peace and rebuilding before she vanishes. Then the player's ending is shown.

If I could be arsed to do so, I would just program some text-based game with these ideas here, and just say 'Here you go' since our friend hasn't given us any mechanical details of gameplay at all.

Okay, what are the mechanics? You can't have a game with just a story.

Balls. Squaresoft has been doing it for years. :mrgreen:

Seriously though, these plots do sound like Final Fantasy rejects. I suggest the OP check out http://www.smwcentral.net - he'll be treated like a king.
