So would PS3 games look better...

Post by GateofThunderforceIII »

...on 720p native TVs since most games only go up to 720p? This question has been killing me.

Problem is: there are hardly any native 720p displays, but only HDReady TVs which have 1366x768 pixels resolution, so you get scaling either way.

Some do look better if you force the PS3 into 720p rather than letting the software upscale (Ninja Gaiden Black I'm pointing at you).

TV's should have a zoom function by now where you can display smaller resolutions natively if you like. Obviously borders will appear thats inevitable.

A zoom function to display non-native resolutions natively? What you mean like scaling them

No, I mean like the PS3 does with video.

If you send a 720 video file to the PS3, during playback you can bring up that little menu thing with "select" and go to the resolution. You can change the image so that it only uses the exact amount of pixels of its native resolution. So if you have a 1080 screen it will use only 720 of them and fix the image in the middle. This makes the image non-scaled because its being displayed natively, it just doesn't fill the screen.

I'm just saying TV's should have that feature. Sometimes via the VGA port you can do this.. mine does. But only on VGA input.

If your TV was 720 native the pixels would be much bigger anyway, so its a trade off. I would say on my TV PS3 games look amazing, but if you bought a really cheap ass TV with shitty scaling, it would be mucho beneficial to have a native 720 display or a TV which scales better to 1080.

Get a TV with a good internal upscaler. This is important. Especially for playing older consoles through the RGB port.

I'm not sure any HDTV on the market works that well with older consoles, hence all the fussing with video-processors.
You can change the image so that it only uses the exact amount of pixels of its native resolution.
Oh I see, probably so few people would want this compared to full screen scaling though.
