Trip to Japan!

Post by jase25 »

Hi folks,

We're planning a trip to Japan in September, can't wait!

We're going for two weeks, staying in Tokyo (Ikebukero) for most of the hol, and making trips to Hiroshima and Osaka for a couple of days.

Here's a list of stuff we've got planned / places we're planning to visit:
Akihabara - Video game and PCB shopping / arcades :D
Odeiba
Mikado arcade
Park Hyatt Hotel in Shinjuku - I love Lost in Translation so this is a must!
Famicom City TV Game Cafe - i've always wanted to go to a retro videogame bar / cafe
Cat Cafe - these look kind of novel!
Miyajima Island - looks awesome
Sauna World in Osaka
Hirajuku
Mount Koya - we're thinking about staying overnight with the monks.

Has anyone got any other recommendations / tips?

In the last hol about three years ago we stayed in Tokyo / Kyoto and climbed up Mount Fuji.

Any good night club recommendations? I suppose this depends on individual taste. Last time we went to Womb and to be honest it was a bit too hardcore for us. We ended up at Club Shibuya and had a brilliant night where they played an electic mix of Spice Girls, Bob Dylan, and the Ghost Busters theme tune! :)

Also where is Try PCB shop located these days? I went there last time and it had turned into a Coffee shop, only to find out it still exists when I got ome. Is it now above the coffee shop or at Try Amusement Tower?

Any tips / suggestions / advice to make the trip even better will be very much appreciated. :D

Cheers,
Jase

Osaka! When you go there, keep singing the Shonen Knife song. "I have been to London one time. I have been to Hong Kong one time. But my favorite town's Osaka! My favorite town's Osaka!" I haven't been to the Kansai area for such a long time, but I still consider myself a Kansai boy.

Shinsaibashi! Take the Midosuji subway line to get there. Start out at America Mura. It's a great place to go if you're hungry for.... takoyaki. Yeah, not a decent burger joint in site, myseriously. All they have there is a McDonalds. Ame Mura is interesting though. Guys from Africa pretending to be Americans, selling tennis shoes and such. Lots of interesting American toys and collectibles, many of which you can't even find in American shops. Mike's Toys is fun. Walk down to the Dotombori canal. So fun! Eat okonomiyaki, see the giant robotic crab, people watch along the canal. Actually, the canal is beautiful at night. Get your picture taken in front of the giant Glico marathon running guy mascot if you like Pocky sticks. There's an interesting underground shopping mall in the area called Namba Walk. From the Namba area, and from there you can make your way to Den Den Town, te Osaka equivalent to Akihabara.

DEFINITELY see the Osaka Kaiyukan Aquarium that UD mentioned. I think the only more impressive aquarium in the world is in Spain, from what I've seen on TV. Don't try to do the Aquarium the same day as the other stuff I mentioned above. Oh yeah, and there's also a Mandarake store near Osaka station/Umeda Station.

Go to Kobe if you're staying in Osaka for any number of days. It's a quick ride by taking the shinkaisoku there. Get off at Sannomiya station, head a block or two south until you see the big shotengai (covered shopping arcade). Follow this until you arrive in the Motomachi area. Here is Kobe Chinatown, yay! Find a street vendor selling Kobe beef on skewers for TEH NOMZ. The series of shotengai continue all the way to Kobe Station area. If you head back to the JR track, you'll see a neon-lit sign saying MOTOKO. Motoko is a cramped, narrow shopping hall extending along underneath the JR line. It's FULL of junk shops. Junk electronics, junk clothes, junk trinkets, junk antiques. There's a retro game shop in there too (I hope it's still there). It's fun to poke around down there. You can find boxes of Famicom carts that have been dumped there, recycled clothing from America, etc. Kobe station area is real fun. Head south to Harbor Land! It's beautiful at night. You'll see the Mosaic building where there are lots of neat shops, a Snoopy store, gelatto, a small amusement park with a beautiful ferris wheel, etc. Short boat cruises from there can take you to see the Akashi Bridge, the #1 longest suspension bridge in the WORLD, which is also beautifully lit up at night, and the colored lights change depending on the season. It connects the city of Akashi to Awaji island, which is between Honshu and Shikoku and was the epicenter of the great Hanshin earthquake in '95.

You may not find much on Kobe in Lonely Planet or other travel books, but just make your way to Sannomiya Station there and you'll find an information booth that has free maps of the area. It's real hard to get lost there, since everything either goes along the tracks or heads south to the ocean. Just go and you won't regret it. Kobe's my favorite city in Japan, #2 being Nagasaki.

I wrote this stuff about Osaka and Kyoto from my first trip to Japan in '98. It's old, but it has some useful information.

Oh yeah, and it's Odaiba and Harajuku. You misspelled those words.

Many thanks for your reply Greg. I've just been having a look through the pages on your blog, lots of info there, thanks very much for sharing! I'm going to sit down and have another read through when i've got a bit more time. :D

I'm now planning on having a day in Kobe and I'd also like to pay a visit to the Osaka Aquarium. I'll definitely do some kind of photo page about the trip when I get back.

Thanks again for your help guys! :D

The Deli on the first floor is incredible. Go there for lunch -- will set you back about 1500, which I find pricey for lunch, but it's fantastic. At night, if you don't mind paying UP, go to the NY grill at the top. It's where the bar scenes in the movie were filmed, and it is pretty much "just like that". It's quite pricey though. 2000 yen cover if you sit at a table. Sitting at the bar is (or at least was) free. Good list of Scotch.

Don't forget:
Shinjuku Gyoen
Meiji Shrine (just walk over when you've had enough of the Harajuku freaks on Sunday)
Tokyo Tower

It really depends more on the night, and not the club. Womb books worldwide talent. It's about the only place in Shibuya that does. The other club you went to sounds like Gas Panic, or just any run of the mill club. If you're cool w/ that, just go back to the Love Hotel district and find any number of said places on the outskirts.

Back at the coffee shop I hear. They get bored and move every 6 months.

moved again - they are back in arcade tower - or they were still there last week. lol.

Womb is fantastic when it's rocking - absolutely rammed last time i went but a really friendly crowd too.

Unit on the border of Daikanyama and Ebisu is a nice club - has a strange mix of big names (PVD) and locals (Yoda) but it's got a great atmosphere.

Call me shallow, but i quite like Ageha just because it's so over the top - the Rez style sound system in the main hall is hilariously over the top and awesome. Acts that play there seem to not want to ever stop playing! :) Bit of a treck but there's a free bus from Shibuya that runs to and fro throughout the night.

Here's a dumb question:

How much would it cost round-trip airfair/hotel/days spent/money etc etc/the works to get a complete tour of all the major gaming/otaku centers of Japan?

I've been meaning to get this out of my system for years.

So much depends on the season.

Now would be ridiculous, especially with the dollar bent over like it is.
Early February wouldn't be so bad, but its gonna be cold!
Quite literally thousands of dollars in difference, if only counting airfare and hotel.

man, me and my coworker are on a trip to Colorado. We were just reminiscing about Japan. I miss it! and we were in tiny Sasebo where there really isn't shit to do... Except get shitfaced and sing karaoke....

Wait, that's like the best I can imagine doing.

I miss it.

Coming from Wisconsin, you would probably love the Tokyo winter. It's considered mild, by most.

The whole "Wisconsinites like Winter" thing is a misconception. We DON'T like Winter...we're just used to it...so some of us are in denial and wear shorts even in several feet of snow. :P

But yeah, at this point I just want a pricetag to shoot for...if not now, then when I got a good job (assuming that ever happens).

Actually I'd be insane enough to work IN Japan, if given the opportunity.

I think you missed my point. It's mild here -- IE, not as cold as Wisconsin... hence, you'd prefer it over Wisconsin. Never knew there was a saying that Wisconsinites liked Winter. Never known one.

Oh there is...along with the sayings that we like Cheese Beer and Sausage here.... Not all true, but not all false either...

Anyway, what would a Winter Trip to Japan cost, approximately? If I hit Winter Comiket that'd be interesting. :D
