Looks like I'll be stopping by Fortaleza in November or December, since Ms. CIT is going to be doing some research there.
I know a there's lots of Brazilians here, so maybe you have some specific recommendations or tips what one must see or do in Northeastern Brazil?
Stuff to do in and around Fortaleza, Brazil
Re: Stuff to do in and around Fortaleza, Brazil
I'm from Fortaleza
The best place I can recommend to you is the 'Praia de Iracema', it's the hotspot of the city. It's next to the coast and it has a lot of bars and restaurants nearby, it's very lively during the night. The 'Dragao do Mar' is in the same area and also worth a visit, it usually has some art exhibits, a planetarium and around it there are some more bars and nightclubs. Further away there's the Mucuripe Club which is the best nightclub in town.
There's also the 'Beira-Mar', a big walkway also next to the coast. There's a big craft fair there where you can buy some T-shirts and lots of other stuff. Toward the end of the walkway there's a big, 2-floor restaurant called 'Peixada do Meio', I often go there with my father. They have a fish fillet with shrimp sauce which is delicious.
During the day, you can go to the 'Praia do Futuro' and visit one of the many local huts, the most popular one is the 'Chico do Caranguejo', though it's also very crowded. It's nice to just sit there, eat some crab and drink coconut water.
There's also Beach Park, a waterpark which is about an hour drive from the city. You can either enter the waterpark itself, stay outside and have some food and drinks, or rent some quads and ride the dunes. Stuff there is rather expensive though, but still worth a visit.
Well, that's all I can think for now.

Cool! Thanks for the tips! Is there anything to do around the university's Campus do Pici?

Campus do Pici is a bit away from the city, I don't think there's anything worthwhile to do nearby.

Come to Rio de Janeiro!

It would definitely be cool, but I'm not sure I can take off more than a week, and Rio is quite far to travel.
