PSP Shmup Emulation Madness

Post by cavemaniac »

I was cruising ebay for a psp and ran into these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 43615&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WDVW

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 90846&rd=1

I never new the psp emu scene was this developed so quickly. So my imagination is running wild with the idea of having a psp runnin pc engine, snes (axelay!!!), and genesis (thunderforce!) shooters (not to mention other emus. I know I know, its unethical and illegal..but man what a wonder machine!

I read a couple of site and they said the genesis emu runs full speed with sound..not sur eof the others.. and one obvious downside.. it looks like only the 1.0 firmware can run most of the emus.

I dont see the point in this, you can run emu's on 1.50 now anyway.

Megadrive emulation isnt perfect yet. But i'd go as to far to say thay nes and pce engine emulation on the psp is near perfect. Also psp mame recently is makeing huge jumps, the recent 1942 emu is near perfect.

theres nothing to run, so yeah. it just involves putting stuff on the memory stick. hook up the psp in usb mode and itll show up as a drive, or just use a usb mem stick reader, same thing. throw some files onto the stick and off you go.

1.51/1.52 psps are supposedly starting to ship though, theres no hacks for those yet.

The "kxploit" tool you need to make the loader is only available for PC though.

I don't see the point of ANY of those products; they're all ridculously expensive. You could buy every Nintendo and Sega system ever made, including all the handhelds and the Cube, and still come up short! :?

yeah, and then you could travel with them in the bus, in the car, etc.

i don't generally emulate but if i had a psp, i would have had these emulators long ago.
I have no sig whatsoever.

Man,this is AWESOME!! :D

Pc-Engine and NES ran perfectly, whereas SNES and GEN are just a tad slower...this is great!

It's almost like having a portable X-Box

Gonna try running NGCD emu now...

Never fails to amaze me how people are willing to pay for something that is free with a bit of research.

Its a shame the response time on the PSP screen isn't the greatest as its shows up quite badly on 2D fast flowing platformers.

It's really amazing how quickly the PSP has gone from a system with little to offer to shmuppers - to now practically the greatest shmup handheld ever, through its incredible GPU-accelerated emulation on 1.00/1.50 firmware.

As of right now, NES/Famicom, SMS, PCE/TG16, MD/Genesis, SNK NeoCD shmups are all incredible on the Sony PSP, and with Memory Sticks up to 2 GB already available, the sky's the limit in terms of how much of your collection you can take with you anywhere you now want.

And the emulation quality will only continue to get better, and more plentiful. SNES/S-Famicom, MAME, CPS2... maybe even PSX and Saturn :o

I went to my local EB and found they still had 1.5's in stock, tons of em.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

If you have a lot of money, that is. Seriously, I can buy a hard drive that stores 200 times that amount for around that price.

Well, to each their own.

Yeah, all you need is an incredible shrinking machine so you can fit it into your PSP!

Are the genesis emulators running at decent speed? I didn't both to try. I figured they would be on par with the SNES ones, which right now are suitable only for RPGs with frameskip enabled.

Which genesis emu is worth check out?

PSP Genesis v0.17. Speed/framerate still depends on the game though, so not all titles are smooth (but many are). After playing portable Elemental Master last night at decent speed and good sound (and Streets of Rage 2 in widescreen :D) I'm impressed with what the programmer has accomplished so far even without optimization
