Well, that's what L'Oreal Pre-Shower Maximum Fingertip Firming Formula (sold separately) is for.

So why does it annoy the hell out of me? Because of 2 things.

1) I cannot open the fucking thing especially in the shower when my hands are wet. Its got sharp edges on the harder plastic where it opens.
2) Its quite thick to press in, if you do a snot bubble and let go whatever came out of the nozzle goes back in.

I could write a book about terrible packaging.
Scissors sealed in plastic which requires scissors to open.

Either the people who design it are taking the piss, or they're certified lunatics. How has this insanity survived the anti-plastic crusade??

A special sub-circle of hell is reserved for the designers of shitty lowest-common-denominator packaging.

There was a time where you could whip the film top off a packet of bacon, and it would come off exactly as expected; quick and clean. Two pieces of plastic.
Now? Fuck it, go get the knife, it's not worth fighting with the weird unibody vacuum seal bullshit that would rather pull the entire tray inside out than actually open.

The insane levels of packaging aren't completely out to lunch. I'd guess that the sort of thing where scissors come in packaging that requires scissors (or a knife) is in part to minimize theft. One of the easiest ways to nab something is to have a box that can be easily opened, remove the product out of the box, and pocket it. Having the packaging be cumbersome and hiding an anti-theft tag in it or something might be a cheap way to act as a deterrent, and commercial companies don't care about the environmental impact of all that extra plastic compared to using a cardboard box to package things.

I'm laughing at the packaging comments. Can't say i've ever bought scissors in a moulded plastic wrap but I can believe it

I don't like PS4-PS3 controller packaging I like keeping it, but its hard to get out without destroying it somewhat.

A slight one this time from me. When in 2024 you buy a PC/Console product that isn't USB-C. I look at it for 10 seconds with a
Luckily this time it was a microphone which goes in the back of the PC so not that big of a deal I won't be attaching-de-taching that much. Were these items built 5 years ago?

One wonders why USB-C took so long to come out, it took a lot of baby steps to reach it.

Delivery man came with a package from outside the country. Demanded me to pay for customs. Then refused to take the money and went away with the package, saying he'll come again tomorrow.

just.... what? I guess he wasn't completely sure what he had to do in case of a customs payment and wanted to double check before taking money by mistake??

Yep, it's all part of doing business with meat packing companies nowadays. And you still have to a fetch a gallon-sized plastic bag to store the unused remaining bacon. I am surprised that the Farmer John branded bacon is still processed in Los Angeles, CA these days.

I learnt a year or 2 ago that meat is packaged with gas injected into it.
Over the past decade, the use of case-ready modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) has increased by the meat industry in various countries. Carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2) are the gases most commonly used in MAP fresh meats.

The term "AI guardrails".

Machine learning cannot be contained and it will not be contained. Anyone that says differently is ignorant or stupid--probably both.

Ultimately, "guardrails" will only exist in open source and consumer facing products. Their main ultimate goal will be restrain the technology and prevent garage startups from disrupting existing corporations.

That's all the "guardrails" you're going to get and those are bad for you. Under lock and key, proprietary closed code will do anything and everything the super rich want to do--and there's absolutely nothing you can do to stop it.

It's the same lesson we keep failing to learn; we keep marching on in the name of "progress" instead of wondering if it's realistically something we should in fact develop (see: nuclear weapons). I'm convinced humanity will one day go extinct entirely due to its own hubris.

Both of my regular official PS2 controllers are now broken. Only the PS2-Saturn pad still works.

Well if "SORA" videos are anything to go by, people are taking things way too far. The deep fake thing already has social media littered with investment scams (aimed usually at the UK only). Having Elon Musk stating how he uses "get rich" schemes to make money and for you to join up. Technology is gradually making all trades obsolete. It will suppress the imagination, suppress hope in anyone who is artistic and make everyone feel useless. Which will inevitably stop prorecreation because A) we are not needed anymore and B) there is no future for our offspring. And if you like C) Nobody can afford to live anymore if your just starting up. You could spent a fortune on education just to find that when you eventually graduate your skill is obsolete.

Life is now a game, where the people of power have put life on "hard" settings, whilst they themselves have the cheat code.

Deepfakes such as pornography and scams are an entirely predictable result of this kind of tech. And unfortunately the techbros who insist it'll all be worth the dumpster fire they've unleashed do so because developing this technology is what pays their bills. No real regard for future consequences, only short term gain.
Technology is gradually making all trades obsolete. It will suppress the imagination, suppress hope in anyone who is artistic and make everyone feel useless.
On the plus side, maybe this will drive a new renaissance in physical artistic works that traditionally aren't given much attention compared to 2D paintings and digital art. Things such as sculptures and textile art are generally held in much less regard, but those things cannot be replicated by AI. There's no way for AI to sew a costume or to chisel a piece of marble... not unless we give it a way.

For my own part, I've recently been using dall-e a LOT to make all sorts of ridiculous things, and it's fun as hell, but I know in the back of my mind, all the data it's consumed is just hoovered off the interent wholesale .. which isn't fair to anyone, honestly. But what can you do? Outlaw hoovering up the entire internet? Too late, cat's outta the bag IMO.

Nobody cared when that happened before. I fail to understand how previous victims of offshoring, slave labor work visas, and automation will care when machine learning finally hits smug "creators".

Get retraining. :D Hey, get a job coding "AI". That's the ticket!

It will probably create... like... twice as many jobs as it replaces. (Or some shit like that.)

See why I spent so long talking about unions and railing against neoliberals? I'm actually amused. This will be fun. Time for some smug centrists to finally get a sweet taste of humility. Time to taste your precious free market, kids.

My only fear is that the technology will get locked up entirely or paywalled. If you push back, you'll only stop open source tools. After you get canned, you'll realize you can't access the tools that replaced you to take on your previous employer. The automation will be locked out of reach, because you stopped open source tools from happening: trying (in vain) to fight the inevitable. All you're going to do is hurt yourself.

This is a tricky thing. I agree and disagree.

On one hand, I really wouldn't want to be a porn star for anyone in any way. That's creepy.

On the other hand, I don't think the current porn industry is good for people. Women have very few career options after they appear in porn. It's a scarlet letter.

That entire industry is shady. Maybe completely fake pornography is more ethical than watching the poor souls that get dragged in. I find it difficult to believe that most porn workers do not eventually regret their decision. Some probably make enough money to live the rest of their lives comfortably, make good investments, and stay away from drugs--but how many?

I don't know the answer. I don't think we can banish pornography, so what can be done? Would all fake content be better?

----

Text to speech is the most frightening technology. We're entering a new epoch, where you can't trust your own ears when you get a phone call. That's where the scammers will go. People are already skeptical of the media, but they can still be easily fooled when their phone rings. Voice cloning risk is what we need to solve immediately.

You'll immediately doubt the president said whatever you heard on Facebook, but will you be as cautious when your child calls?

The problem with tech is that it can be done from anywhere and reach anywhere. It might spawn from Western leading countries and the shareholders of that tech will love it, but everyone else suffers.

It also weakens governments to be able to control anything. We have created a world from the get go where any tool can be abused. A car that can do 200mph, Social media that can reach millions of people with misinformation, lies and scams. Windows O/S which is the driving force of virus's, hacks, illegal modifications, torrents and emulation. Ironic that Bill Gates had one of the first copyright claims and then built an O/S from which every other person used to create piracy.

We live in a world where one person creates a lock, and someone else creates a pick lock. You just have to look at any games console to see millions are waiting for jail broken hardware.

In my eyes, just like wars, we have to fear the future, because we have not learnt from the past.

Most of the world economies are doomed right now. Which means all that goody two shoes stuff you learnt at school is soon forgotten. As soon as you are out in the wild on your own, you want to hack life itself. Cheat, steal, lie and make as much money as possible. Because that house you wants now costs 15x your annual salary, and you ain't got a prayer by following the rules.

I blame it on realism in gaming, it pushes the level of development through the roof. I think Konami are sitting back eating popcorn right now. We have a perfect storm where folk are split between physical and digital, jailbreaking or buying, retro or modern. The market is split between sub markets now and thats risky AF when your making a new 200 million dollar game going up against other 200 million dollar games when the world wants AI, autmation, off shore workers and home deliveries.

Super huge things that piss me off: corpo internet.

I have two internet email accounts I've had for nearly 30 years now. Locked out of both of'em. Only way to get back in? Reset the password, of course. One sends the reset email to the other. Hilarious.

... it's fuckin' internet email. If I haven't used them to spam the shit out of anyone or commit fraud, what fuckin' reason could they possibly have for locking them?

To fuckin' piss me off, that is the only possible reason. Hah... fuckin' corpo assholes.

And they want to hook the internet into your car, your wife, your dog, your very brain itself. It's gonna be great...

... in some hippy alternative universe where shit is allowed to work, you just enter your password and log in. They don't have breeds of tall ass lawn grass you're required to mow or microwaves for poor people that lack a "silence" button, over there...

On a related note, my own email (which I've also had for decades) recently tweaked itself so now once you finish reading something in your inbox and delete it, it no longer takes you to the top of the next message so you can start reading it, but sends you to the same spot on the new message as you were on the old one, which is almost always the bottom since you just finished reading it. Who in heaven's name thought I'd want to start reading a new message anywhere except the top?
