I can't seem to unlock Gradius III's extra edit on Gradius III and IV for PS2. According to GameFAQs' cheat section, extra edit should be available after either clearing the game or racking up a playtime of ten hours, but even after splattering Bacterion across the cosmos I haven't noticed any changes. The only choices after starting a game are the plain old type select and edit mode, and the fourth selection in the "Extra Mode" menu is still ??????

I cleared G3 on Easy (difficulty 3) and using stage select. Do I need to play on a higher setting or 1CC the game?

I've the extra edit, but I had to put in 20 hours of gameplay at least, though I did remember a simple weapon edit appearing after 10 hours, but the best stuff was after 20 hours of gameplay in Gradius 3. The other alternative is to 1CC the entire game, not sure if it has to be on normal mode though.

1CC. Difficulty or konami code doesnt affect whether you unlock it. 1CC it again for even more weapons!
