This is a thread for you to share with others the shmups that may not be exactly the BEST shmup, but you still love. You know, the ugly girl who's fun to hang with. I personally like Fire Hawk from the Arcade and S.T.G. Strike Gunner from the SNES.

Also, woot! First thread!

Battle Garegga & DOJ

I know those are both well received games but they just happen to be the one's I like the most.

At least until DFK is released!

I kinda like Thunder Cross, even though there's really nothing special about it. Not even sure why.
Maybe it's just because it's really easy so I can feel like a big man when I play it.

Robo Aleste on sega cd is a pretty cool game no one ever talks about. Cheap as hell for a copy, too. Great soundtrack. I still need a 1CC in it actually.

KNIGHTMARE, also known as Majou Densetsu, better known for its platforming sequel, Maze of Gallious. I vaguely remember 1cc'ing it as a kid but I don't remember if I used the shortcuts.

Raptor: Call of the Shadows

It's a euroshmup, it's a bitch to go back and play after getting used to the works of Cave and Raizing, but damn it if I and a number of people on this forum don't love it.

I seldom see Argus (Jaleco, Arcade) or Darwin 4078 (Data East, Arcade) mentioned here. Both are very cool games that deserves more playtime. Especially Argus as it's a really manic shmup with lots of risk/reward stuff to score high.

Played the PSX port recently and it's not too bad, but I prefer Pippols.
My personal favourite is Raiden III on the PC. Not necessarily better than its predecessors, but excellent nonetheless.

So I'm not the only one who loves Strike Gunner! Good to know.

As for my personal pick, I'd have to say Raycrisis, since I seem to enjoy that game a lot more than most people. Another would be Armada on the Dreamcast, which was actually really fun when played with another person or two. It was almost like Diablo in space. Almost.

And also, Abadox.

If were talking about real rough diamonds then ive gotta add Arcanacra black label which is a really fun java / flash shmup when paired with xpadder. Im not usually a lover of flash shmups but Keim's Arcanacra BL is a proper shmup unlike the untold millions of shitty flash shooters out there.

Gotta go with Axelay and Gradius III on the SNES. Some of the earlier shmups I played as a kid and I still whip 'em out from time to time. I still remember buying Axelay because a friend thought it sounded cool, I didn't even know anything about it but I've never regretted the purchase!
