Best PC-Engine Joystick?
Been interested in getting a PC-Engine joystick at some point. I'm debating with going the Cthulhu route and making another custom stick, but if there is a good one out there for cheap, It'd probably be best for me to just go ahead and do that. Really wanting to go the cheap route on this one. I imagine Pc-Engine Fan X can help me with this one
Thanks for any help!

Custom stick + hack an old PCE controller = done.

Depends how cheap you're looking to go here. The Cthulhu + RJ-45 option would make the stick far more versatile, just based on the fact that the Cthulhu works on damn near everything except the Dreamcast and 360.
But if you have PCE controllers around, or can get one cheap enough, and that's all you care about, then go for it.

Yeah, I'm kinda torn if the best bet would be to make a Cthulhu for multiple things, or just pad hack a PCE controller...I've got an old Hori EX2 shell laying around with some extra buttons, so that may be my best best I'd say. Don't really want to spend the money on a Cthulhu board, and then the multiple components for other systems, even though I have/want to get converters since I own a billion sticks already. Looks like I'm PCE controller hack bound, then.

I've found that pad hacks work well with MAS Super Nova sticks! Since the MAS sticks are already discretely wired to a standard connector (DB15), why not just mount a connector on said controller (i.e. NEC pad) and connect a stick that has been wired discretely. This way you ensure the exact functionality of an official pad, and really only need one stick (or more).drauch wrote:Yeah, I'm kinda torn if the best bet would be to make a Cthulhu for multiple things, or just pad hack a PCE controller...I've got an old Hori EX2 shell laying around with some extra buttons, so that may be my best best I'd say. I own one of the original Cthulhu kits... while there doesn't seem to be any issues with it (not sure about PIC lag), it seems like it would be over complicated just for the sake of using a joystick on a PC engine... a good pad hack K.I.S.S. FTW (keep it simple, stupid).
If you have so many sticks, why not rewire one discretely (each button wired individually to a standard connector pin)??

Re: Best PC-Engine Joystick?
The Hori Fighting Stick PC is a cool PCE joystick worth playing/owning for it's solid metal based joystick base (both the top half and bottom half are solid metal plates bent into the proper halves that make up the actual joystick itself). Plus you can select either the normal 2-button or 6-button setup via a simple flick of a switch mounted on the upper portion of the joystick base...is perfect for use with the PCE games that can utilize the optional 3-button endowed controller setup like the PCE Super CD-Rom2 version of Forgotten Worlds (or just pick up an optional NEC Avenue 3 or NEC Avenue 6 controller would be acceptable). Personally, I find my PCE shmup scores getting higher and higher with the use of this particular Fighting Stick PC joystick setup indeed -- very well manufactured joystick from the likes of Hori. The actual joystick feels like that it'd be a Seimitsu based one...so no need to mod it anyways.
The NEC Avenue 6 Pad has both auto-fire + built-in slow-motion features as well in addition to sporting 6 seperate push button layout (perfect for them PCE fighting games that run on the Arcade CD-Rom2 platform & Street Fighter Hu-Card).
The classic NEC Turbo Stick for the TurboGrafx-16 console is cool for it's non-clicky based (and very responsive) joystick setup along with the obligatory pair of adjustable auto-fire slider switches for buttons I & II + slo-mo functionality built-in also. Unfortunately, you'd have to use a optional NEC TG-16 to Duo controller adapter if you want to use it on the PCE/Duo consoles since it uses the old-school bigger 8-Din controller interface setup though (compared to the much smaller 8-Din controller interface found on the typical PCE/Duo consoles).

Re: Best PC-Engine Joystick?
I just scooped my first PC Engine (A JPN PC Engine Core GrafX) that came with a free Avenue Pad 6 thrown in for free.
I do have a spare stick shell (Agetec with spare stick and buttons). If I were to hack in a pad, would it be best to just go with a simple 2-button stock first party PCE pad, or is there a good 6 button one to go with?
Thanks!
