You're going to make a nice little table, right?

9,174,238

I wish it kept track of what stage that was on, though I think it was 4 or 5.

Replay here

If anyone can tell me how I did it, I'd appreciate it. I haven't come anywhere close since.

EDIT: Actually, I should point out that my framerate is miserable at the bosses, making that bit much much easier... So this isn't exactly a fair competition.

Leviathean - 5,794,746

The Stage number definitely doesn't matter as much as the rank multiplier (in the top right corner) in this game. Even on the first stage, if you go full speed, ignoring most enemies and pushing that rank to x50 or so, you'll quickly find yourself facing bullet patterns that you would only see on the later levels. On the second level, I managed to push the rank to x150 and saw a lot more bullets than what I saw during my high score run.

EDIT: Also, my frame rate is also "horrible" on bosses, or when there's a lot of bullets on screen. It might just be intentional slowdown on behalf of the programmer, but we need more observations to be sure. Future posters, let us know how your framerate is during bossfights.

Yep, mine seems to slow down as well, I'm starting to think it's intentional, since the slowdown in Noiz2sa, I believe, was definitely intentional.

..Woah, another shmupper from Ontario :/

Wow, I don't know how I made it without dying, but I managed to full-speed the entirity of the first stage (1'00'00) and found myself face to face with a Rank x200 boss. I didn't do so well, I'll tell you that.

Huh. You're right. I go poking through the Gunroar code, and I see what I think is the code to cause intentional slowdown... I just assumed it was because my computer sucked.

Running all the way through level one is lots of fun. I only get up to about rank 70 before I chicken out. It seems to be worth about a million points.

Shatterhand - 6908984

I can't believe how I lost my last life. After dodging 2468954213 bullets, there were just 3 or 4 bullets on screen and I RAN INTO A BULLET I HAD ALREADY GET PAST... damn!

Very nice game.

By the way my frame rate never seens to be "horrible", though it does slowdown when stuff get too crowded. And it DOES NOT seems to be intentionaly.

I agree, it slows on bosses, but not to any major degree

I haven't noticed any during the levels yet, even with the rank up high

My PC ain't that hot either, a good 3-4 years old now

It slows down on my comp, and it HAS to be intentional, otherwise, my 2.0GHz comp really does suck. :/

And it does slowdown in levels too... but it's never too bad. So either my computer really can't handle the game at full speed, or you guys are too afraid to play with the rank at 70 most of time like me :D

How exactly do you make the rank increase fast?

Push the screen by going at the top of it.

I was kidding, I don't keep the rank at 70, though I've managed to reach this a few times and SURVIVE through it :D

I think the game's intentional slowdown is purely a function of the number of bullets on the screen. Also, I can't figure out if those bonus crystals that drop when you kill an enemy are worth any points or not.

Small improvement

freddiebamboo - 8,178,181

Did the first 6.5 mil on the first level :?

Doesn't seem to be very reliable to get through to the boss with the multiplier intact. Also seems hard to sustain the multiplier if you push rank during an early level and begin to slow down and destroy enemies.

I think the minimum rank could be determined by the rank you finish the previous level at. Not sure tho.

Your observations on rank match my own: If you want to deliberately increase rank, it seems best to do a sustained dash up the top of the screen ignoring everything you can. Stopping to fight near the top of the screen is dangerous and doesn't seem very effective at increasing rank. Rank stops increasing after the boss music begins to play, so it's crucial to kill the boss as quickly as possible before your rank drops too low. Killing the boss locks the rank in as the minimum for the next level.

Getting the best score is definitely a matter of destroying enemies' guns to increase the multiplier. A rank 40 boss with all of its guns destroyed is worth 2 million points all by itself.

Yeah, I agree

I watched your replay, but I can't remember if you pushed the rank that hard in the first stage, but it seems that a rank of 100-150 is easily achieved if you time a dash after half way through the level. Dashing all through gets around 300, but there is a large danger of being killed by top screen bullets after it reaches 175+.

I take it your strat is based on maximising the number of boss fights (which gain the largest scores) as opposed to hard ranking the levels?

6.5 million in the 1st level? Whoa! :D

I got 2.5 million in the 1st level, that's my best so far :D

Yeah, I've never had any luck ranking up. I always get my best scores when I play conservatively and just concentrate on destroying enemies' guns for the multiplier. Boring but true... As for bosses: I've observed that a good half of my score comes from the boss fights.

Still trying to figure out how best to tackle the game. Ranking up gets me more points, and I don't seem to be surviving much further when I don't push the scrolling much, so I dunno:

alpha5099 - 6,641,295

Definitely some of ABA's best work.

It seems to get easier once the slowdown becomes consistent. It's definitely deliberate slowdown, I checked the Task Manager on this Athlon 1.8GHz and it was around 50%. I think the slowdown is too much.
