Seriously, Sony. WTF? (YLOD-related)

Post by Specineff »

So, last year my PS3 gets the YLOD. This happens in a similar manner to the RROD, for those who have never heard of it.

Given I was out of warranty, I paid 150 dollars to have it fixed. The unit works fine for about one year or so...

It happened again (With a rental disc inside. ), so instead of paying Sony 150 dollars for them to release the disc so I wouldn't have to pay Blockbuster for it, I decided to go the DIY route. When I opened the system, I find myself with the crappiest, cheesiest, sloppiest "work" I've ever seen. It's like somebody swallowed a tube of thermal paste and vomited it all over the chips and fan. I bet that they didn't bother reflowing the solder, even.

And Sony dares to charge 150 dollars for this? I've seen blind artisans in Mexico do better work than this. Blind and illiterate. At least MS gives 3 years warranty on the RROD. (Not wanting to start a console fight.)

Buyer beware. Also, F*** Sony.

I fear for my PS3 :( Not only because it'll inevitably die, but whatever fix Sony does will cost a lot and won't do much good.

I wish consoles nowadays were as reliable as the ones in the past. To this day, a friend of mine has a working Mega Drive.

My slim had the same amount of thermal paste. While not good, it's certainly not the cause of the problem.

What is the problem is that Sony still does terrible work. I've lost a PS3 already, they wanted $19x (shipped both ways). It hasn't failed since coming back.

Friend did the same thing (60gb launch PS3). His failed a few months ago. He had it for 4 months- and it failed again. They wanted another payment to re-fix the shit. He threw up a fuss and got it fixed again.

And please don't take this as console wars- but my launch Wii did that "dots on graphics" crap from that whole 'it overheats and damages the video chip" thingie. Nintendo has no warranty- and I don't recall the price they wanted, but I ended up craigslisting the machine noting the problems and letting someone else figure out what to do with it.

So- people give Microsoft crap. They deserve it. BUT- one of the things that fueled my 360 phase is that even though the hardware is wonky and has died a bunch, I have put exactly zero dollars towards repairs or shipping. I've been comped XBL time and MS points on top of it.

Eh- I know all systems can fail (and will). I had a DC laser die, a PS1 needed its laser re-tracked and adjusted- but I don't really remember any gens prior to this one with so many issues across the board. I still have a working launch NES- I replaced the cart reader 2 years ago and it's been solid as a rock.
