Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
A Bronx Tale.
First time I've seen this and boy did I enjoy this, was expecting the usual gangster flick with the killing and brutal scenes etc.
Took me by surprise that De Niro play's a mild mannered bus driver who's just looking out for his son instead of the gangster role.

Journey to the West (2013) - Stephen Chow
Had not seen a Stephen Chow film before.
The actual names of his films, were always an instant turn-off to me.
Journey to the West though, was an easy sell for someone who grew up watching the Monkey TV show.
Man, this was great! I was not expecting this high a standard.
The comedic acting was excellent. The capturing of Zhu Bajie (KL Hog, in the film ) was a joy to watch.
I think I will have to give Kung Fu Hustle (2004) a look-see.

I watched it years ago and laughed my balls off. Then again, I went in with a clean slate. I also am not sure who chooses those English titles, but having lived in Asia for a long fucking time, I'd never try to hold that against anyone (although most HK films are leaps ahead of Japan).
Need to go through it again. Will check out Journey to the West as well.

Both God Of Cookery and Shaolin Soccer are great. Stay far away from the American "Kung Fu Soccer" recut of Shaolin Soccer though, it sucks footballs.Zen wrote:I think I will have to give Kung Fu Hustle (2004) a look-see.

I watched the latest Jurassic Park film, it was "ok".
Also watched the live action version of Jin-Roh which is on Netflix at the moment, it's really well done but there's a major plot change I'm not too sure about.

Didn't finish it but I was disappointed with what I watched, it was way too action-oriented and the relationship of the two didn't feel as fleshed out, in the end the faction conflict overshadowed the human conflict from the original making it unnecessarily long.system11 wrote:Also watched the live action version of Jin-Roh which is on Netflix at the moment, it's really well done but there's a major plot change I'm not too sure about.

Errementari - really enjoyed this film, it's almost Guillermo Del Toro in style.

Cool soundtrack by Peter Gabriel, I guess. Out of place as hell, but cool nonetheless.

Mad Max: Fury Road: ****
Yes, I've been living under a rock for the last four years on this one.Good solid action film with little filler and only a couple of times where it devolves into CGI nonsense. Charlize Theron tends to annoy me in most films she's in, but Furiosa really made the film. Not sure I'd give this one six Oscars, but good and solid.

Didn't realize until after that it was a play, and I'm having a hard time wondering how it worked as the film covered a lot of ground. Would be interested to hear opinions on the translation. I didn't really go in with much info on it. Fucking hell.Leandro wrote:I've never seen the movie but I've seen the play. It was amazingGaijinPunch wrote:Incendies (2010)

Love Shaolin Soccer and KFH, but couldn't get into God of Cookery.
Will give Journey to the West a shot though.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Got around to seeing Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Funny, grim, sad, and beautiful anthology of Western stories by the Coen brothers.

How did I miss that? Something worth seeing in the theater!soprano1 wrote:The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

EDIT: WTF - it's showing at one theater in the whole city.
EDIT2: It's on Netflix already. Not sure how I feel about that.

Blazing Saddles. Hilarious movie! I liked how the villain was named Hedley Lemarr.

Widows
After some robbers die in a fire, the wife (Viola Davis) of their leader (Liam Neeson) is forced to execute another robbery he had already planned, with the help of other equally amateur widows of gang members (Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki). Despite some twists, they exceed expectations by several million dollars.
Brilliant scenes and dialogues, with a convoluted heist and betrayal plot turned into an opportunity for drama with interesting characters and social and political relevance.
Simple but well thought out and well photographed action scenes, with refreshingly moderate violence and shooting.

Really shitty. Worst thing I've seen in ages.

yes. Amazing cast. Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder (who has a habit of being in some of the better Mel Brooks movies), and Slim Pickens were excellent, as well. Not to mention the awesome cameo from Dom DeLuise.emphatic wrote:Madeleine Kahn was such a babe too.BrianC wrote:Blazing Saddles. Hilarious movie! I liked how the villain was named Hedley Lemarr.

The Happytime Murders (2018)
Same concept as Sausage Party, but with (not) Muppets. Not as bad, but still trying too hard to be funny.

It's a sad thing indeed when puppets in a movie directed by Brian Henson are disappointing enough to be called (not) Muppets.soprano1 wrote:The Happytime Murders (2018)

La Jetee (1962)
The precursor of Twelve Monkeys as many people know. Quite interesting, as it's more of a photo novel than anything. Some moving photography, although of course not every shot is awe inspiring (just like not ever scene in a film is). Short and sweet at 28 minutes. I really enjoyed it.
The Conversation (1974)
Did Gene Hackman ever have a full head of hair? I think this is considered similar tier as The French Connection for him. Quite enjoyable, but quite a bit slower than I would have hoped for. That white ribbed sweater on a young Harrison Ford was pretty groovy.
