Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
@CMoon - Yeah, Walkabout is up there, one of the greats. The idea that a film like that could be made now is ridiculous. I used to think that it was because of technique, but it's not, it's the culture, people are different - a generational thing I suppose. For a while Nic Roeg could be found sitting in the corner of my girlfriends local pub (just round the corner from Powis square). When I found this out I would try and drag her there as often as possible... but I never met him. She knew him to say hello to - discuss the football etc... NIC ROEG! Anyhow, not so long ago I saw Eureka for the second time. I still don't know what to make of it.
Anyhow, films that I've recently rewatched:
Possession (Zulawski)
Four Flies on Grey Velvet
Nashville
The Thing (Carpenter)
The Fifth Cord and Le Orme (Bazzoni - both shot by Vittorio Storaro - both beautiful)
Texas Chainsaw: The Beginning (it was on t.v - garbage)
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
Sue (late 90's indie film - good - had Tahnee Welch in it...)
Stardust Memories
Overlord (shot by John Alcott)
These days I don't bother watching new films. I haven't been to the cinema in years (I used to be a projectionist... that killed it). Occasionally a film will come out and it will be proclaimed a masterpiece, when in reality it's probably just a solid film.
Following on from DEL, I've been catching up with some old tv shows: Transformers, Spiderman and his Amazing Friends, Justified, Southland. The joy of torrents...

Let The Right One In - Favorite vampire movie (followed by Blade II). Gives me chills.
Bronson - Very cool biopic about Britain's most violent prisoner. Stars Tom Hardy (Eames from Inception)
Holy Mountain is an experience. I need to watch it again.

I suspect with time this will become a new favorite for me. I've only seen it once and it's too early to give it the reverence I give films I've seen a dozen times, but at this point I'd say its the best film I've seen in a long time and I wish I'd seen it a long time ago and grown old(er) with it.& Yes I have seen Walkabout Mr Cmoon

Re: Movies you've just watched
Glad to know other people have seen it and have experiences with it &/or Roeg. I've been into this period of film + experimental film for 20 years but somehow never seen this which is absurd. It's a really beautiful film...more art than anything else. I have been speaking with a lot of friends about this film and none of them have seen it or even heard of it. I'm under the impression that Walkabout has basically been unavailable/out of print until Criterion decided to reissue it, and by that point people were like 'wtf is this film?'durango76 wrote:@CMoon - Yeah, Walkabout is up there, one of the greats. I'm really blown away how Walkabout is a children's film for adults. I mean, it would be NC-17 today or something, but it is very much an artistic exploration of growing up, using the outback of Australia as a sort of visual catalyst. Absolute magnificent!

To avoid triple posting, I just re-watched Casablanca, but this time on blu ray. Fk all youz! Not my favorite movie, but still one of the absolute best, and anyone who doesn't agree with me is a goat raper.
Edit: Blu-ray is a fucking godsend to these old movies. Yojimbo on Criterion is happening in your house. Casablanca is damn fine. I think it is something about what the HD does for the high definition of B&W, but could be wrong. Either way, with care, love, high quality transfer, old movies are fucking hot on blu ray.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Buhh, other than Inception, no new movies to report.
Edit: I actually watched Tango & Cash and forgot that I've just written about it elsewhere. Alright: The opening of the film is alright and the prison escape is pretty close to epic. The film goes rapidly downhill from there. Jack Palance's talents are badly wasted here, as well as, well, most everybody else's, to boot: Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), James Hong, Clint Howard (well...), whoever played that weird as hell Q-type guy who may or may not be related to Kurt Russell's character, and ESPECIALLY Brion James (aka Kowalski, Leon J.), who looks menacing at the beginning of the movie (in the effective and pretty creepy stakeout scene) but ends up...well, I ought not to spoil it, but Jeezus Christo that's a bad job. On the plus side, I read he's in 48 Hours which I will definitely be checking out before I pick back up Beverly Hills Cop again (which I had needed to remember I have).
Still slowly working on Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice, Millennium even. Was working on The Streets of San Francisco's pilot but the whole flashback structure reminds me of some depressing other thing filmed in the 1970s and I can't really stomach it. it's Karl Malden though. KARL FUCKING MALDEN AND YOUNG MICHAEL DOUGLAS ACTING LIKE A PUNK (sort of)! Damn, how can I not like this? Alright, next try: Hawaii Five-O.

Just finished The Limey. Expected a silly revenge movie about Terence Stamp nipping across the pond to bust a fuckin cap in some tosser. Was actually pretty affecting in its examining of loss and regret. And still chucks in a fair bit of silly revenge-tastic violence.
Great hunter/hunted crime movie from Dirty Harry's director (and co-starring Andy Robinson aka Scorpio Killer)! Walter Matthau is a wiley bugger in this one.DEL wrote:Charley Varrick

Just watched a Filipino film called 'The Family that Eats Soil'. It was pretty crap, self-consciously quirky, but also quite fun.
I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have any recommendations for good Filipino films? It's something I'd like to explore, and I hear there are a lot of interesting older films in particular, but I don't know where to start

I've always dug The Limey. Appropriately, if you look this up on amazon, Get Carter (the original version) and Point Blank show up. This is where you should go next!BIL wrote:Just finished The Limey.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I watched Cocaine Cowboys earlier today. It's a pretty awesome documentary about the explosion of cocaine smuggling through south Florida in the 70's and 80's. They have a blurb on the cover about Scarface and Miami Vice but the stories and characters in the documentary are more interesting than that. Someone needs to make a movie based on Griselda Blanco, a batshit crazy violent Colombian drug dealer that actually had the balls to kill one of the Ochoa's nieces. When they caught her in the states, her chief enforcer was arrested and scheduled to testify about her involvement in various hits and murders but his testimony was dropped because it came out that he engaged in phone sex with secretaries at the prosecutors office.
Anyways, it's a good documentary built largely on interviews with law enforcement and convicted smugglers. I'd recommend to anyone interested in the drug war.

It's still great, but they did take a number of liberties with the story and the characters that I wasn't a fan of.CMoon wrote: But Point Blank is an awesome movie.

Re: Movies you've just watched
just watched Zombies of Mass Destruction. it was a horribly bad movie, but in a so bad its good. Tongue in cheek with homages to other zombie flicks. Its like they intentionally made a bad zombie movie. Selfconcious? I think so. The special effects were pretty good though, but its hard not to laugh when the guy gets bit in the neck and a fountain of blood emerges while he says, "oh god, its my blood", and then get the skin peeled off his face. Effects were REALLY impressive imo.
horrible acting, the sound and sound effects were also not very good, but the gore and effects were top notch.

Just saw Roadhouse on TV, first time ever. Very few boobies.
I found it kind of hilarious. The Mary Sue main character - skinny as shit, doing tai chi and ninja punching everyone around him... the beating up the psychopaths repeatedly for no useful purpose or gain.... etc...

Re: Movies you've just watched
It's still a few down on my Netflix queue (haven't bothered with the apparently-terrible Stallone remake), but from what I've seen of the premise, I feel like Caine's recent "Harry Brown" is sort of a spiritual successor to "Get Carter."BIL wrote:Ah yes, Get Carter (original!) is brilliant. Re: Movies you've just watched
I wouldn't say it is, really. Harry Brown is a vigilante fantasy, with a sympathetic protagonist... I enjoyed it, but it's pretty conventional Death Wish stuff. Get Carter is a deeply nasty gangster movie, with a seriously cold-blooded protagonist.
I've never seen the Stallone version either... it's not got a good reputation, but beyond that, I'm just not interested. Caine is absolutely perfect in the original.

Just watched 'The Sexy Killer', a Shaw Bros. rip off of Coffy. Might even be a remake, but details are scarce. Anyway, I loved Coffy, so I loved this. Taking a Blaxploitation film and setting in in China obviously removes a lot of central thematics (you know, because everyone is Chinese), but there's lots of sex, violence, cool music and funky 70's styles. Definitely recommended.

I love this film. It manages to capture the insanity of the main character very effectively. I think that comparasions to A Clockwork Orange (through it's stylised violence and contrapuntal sound) are pretty much justified. Also, filmed around where I live! Not a great advert for the area, but it's nice to see yet another awesome Nottingham film. I'd certainly check out Nicolas Winding Refn's other films if you liked it, particularly the Pusher trilogy and Bleeder.mesh control wrote: Bronson - Very cool biopic about Britain's most violent prisoner. It's out on DVD very soon. Despite its out and out nihilism, it's surprisingly enjoyable, and very, very funny too. And it looks just beautiful.Joe T. wrote: Unfortunately I haven't seen trash humpers yet but it sounds like something I'd absolutely enjoy.
I'm guessing that's Happy Together. Very interesting film, though not always completely enjoyable to watch. The same could be said about a lot of Wong's films. I showed my students In The Mood For Love, and half of them were bored out of their skulls. The other half were depressed into submissionSkykid wrote: but I just watched 2046 and some other movie that was clearly a Brokeback Mountain precursor. Despite being pretty gay, it was a pretty good film.
I watched a 1950's British War film called The Purple Plain this morning. Great stuff. Gregory Peck was awesome in the lead role. The film switches unexpectedly from something approaching a psychological thriller in the first half to a survival drama filled with plummy heroics and general daring do. Throughout it presented some pretty modern ideas regarding loss and mental health. It's also nice to see a mixed race relationship being portrayed in such a positive light in a film from this era. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Finally got round to watching Milk. Definitely wasn't disappointed. The integration of stock footage, news reports and authentic feeling filming gave this a cinema verite feel. Some aspects were skirted over that I'd like to have seen more of (Milk's successful wooing of blue collar workers, for example), but on the whole this was a very successful biopic. The affection with which it treated such a revered figure was just infectious. I never usually know what to think about Gus Van Sant, but this was a winner.

I've seen The Limey mentioned on this thread and I haven't checked it yet, but I do have another Terence Stamp recommendation: THE HIT 1984

Watched some more films last night
Freaks (1932): This has been sitting in my DVD collection for about a year, but I knew I had to be in the right kind of mood to watch it. Great stuff, and pretty creepy in places. It's nice to track exactly how it's influenced subsequent genres, from mondo to ero-guro. It would be cool to show it in a double bill with Hiroshi Harada's adaptation of Suehiro Maruo's Midori: The Sad Story of the Camellia Girl
The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad This was one of my favourite films growing up, and gave me an early passion for the cinema. The acting is awful, but the special effects are just wonderful. I wish they still made stuff like this; the love and attention that has obviously gone into making Ray Harryhausen's miniatures never fails to bring a smile to my face.
Hanzo the Razor: The Snare Second film int the Hanzo the Razor trilogy, a Japanese chanbara about a police officer with a huge cock who goes around raping women for information, whereupon they fall in love with him. Knowingly politically correct, it's presented as a straight faced black comedy, and it's wildly entertaining. Sex and violence don't necessarily make a good film, but in my opinion, more often than not they do. I got all three films in a nice box set for an extremely reasonable price. Nice to see that this volume was directed by Yasuzo Masumura, who also directed Blind Beast, one of my all time favourites.
