Re: Movies you've just watched
I saw the first Maniac Cop with my bro and sis last night. Really stupid, but entertaining. Had mah boys Bruce Campbell and Fred Atkins, which I wasn't expecting (especially Bruce!).
I'm told the sequel is better in every conceivable way. It's not like this movie was high art, it was extremely predictable and pretty silly (pacing was: rando gets MANIAC'd, scene of characters talking, rando gets MANIAC'd, scene of characters talking - this is pretty consistent for the film).
And FWIW I enjoyed BR2049 enough, but Harrison Ford like all Ford vehicles these days can not be arsed to give two shits about acting. He shows up in fucking jeans and a t-shirt and mumbles about eating cheese. I couldn't believe how little he cared when I watched the flick, lol.

Yeah, I wasn't too bothered. I mean, he was a burnt out detective that trusted nobody. I thought he had some subtlety when he needed it (being interrogated by Wallace) and that was enough for me.

I guess I was in a bad mood when I watched BR 2049 a couple days ago.
I stand by my dislike of Jared Leto and his assistant as mustache-twirling villains. I always saw the cyberpunk genre as more of a "banality of evil" kind of setting. If Tyrell didn't grow slaves, the board of directors could sue him for breach of fiduciary duty so whaddya gonna do?

The only issue I had w/ the villans is they somehow made Sylvia Hoeks substantially less hot than she really is (entirely b/c of her goofy ass bangs).

It's always a tough call when revisiting any of those big, important titles from childhood. I feel the same way about the new star wars films. My like/dislike of them might just be a result of my mood at the time or what I ate for lunch the day I went to the theater.
I can go back and pick them apart, but that will never take the place of the trance a film puts you in (or fails to put you in) when you sit down to watch it for the first time.

Jungle Cruise: **1/2
My wife and I are Disney Parks junkies, having had Annual Passes to Disneyland for several years, and by now I figure I've been on the Jungle Cruise ride enough times that I could probably make it back to the dock with at least a few surviving passengers if the skipper of the boat ever fell overboard and got eaten by animatronic hippos. That said, this movie will probably disappoint fans of the ride, as it shares little more than a name and a few throwaway gags with the original.
The movie stars Emily Blunt as Lily Houghton, a discount female Indiana Jones who hires Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) to pilot his decrepit jungle boat through the Amazon in search of the Tears of the Moon, a tree whose blossoms are purported to be able to heal anything. And the Germans are after it too (World War 1 era Germans, because it would be either too cliche or too un-PC to put Nazis into a film like this anymore) because they believe they would be able to win the war with it. The result is 2 hours of standard issue Chase-The-McGuffin plot with 1 or 2 good action scenes (both within the first 30 minutes of the movie), several bad ones (I think the Marvel crew has been putting on seminars for the rest of the Disney studios on how to use way too many jump cuts in one scene) and a plot that ultimately feels pretty weak.
Emily Blunt's character comes across as something of a Mary Sue (not nearly as much as Brie Larson in Captain Marvel did though) and her and Dwayne Johnson have about as much chemistry between them as an Elementary School science fair. There are brief flashes of a better film here, but they tend to be fleeting, and the final product feels like it can't decide whether it wants to be a Pirates of the Caribbean type film or an Indiana Jones type film, and ends up missing the mark on both. The end result is a passable Summer popcorn flick, but probably nothing you'd want to see more than once.
That said, out of all the movies I've ever seen in a theater, this was definitely, and by far, the most... recent. (Now get out. Oops, I'm sorry, that was rude... Please get out. And watch your head. If you don't watch your head, be sure to watch your language.)
Edit: A few more comments in spoiler text, not that there's much to spoil here:

Spoiler
One of the main problems here is that it just never feels like there's any real sense of danger here. In an early scene, an incident in a bar between Frank and someone he owes money to is interrupted by the sudden appearance of a random jaguar in the bar, causing a panic. Of course, even in the Amazon it's highly unlikely that a random wild animal is ever going to just walk into a bar and try to devour unsuspecting patrons, so you suspect something is up pretty quickly. Sure enough, the jaguar is Frank's pet.
Later on, Frank is apparently killed in an ambush by the immortal Spanish conquistadors whose quest for the Tears of the Moon led them to be cursed with immorality but to never be allowed to leave the Amazon, but as you can probably guess, if you ever kill off one of the headlining actors in the film and there's still an hour of runtime remaining, the chances of them actually being dead are pretty much zero. Sure enough, we find out about three minutes later that Frank is alive and under the same curse, only he somehow managed to avoid being turned into some sort of bad CGI beehive abomination in the process.
Finally, the film's "inclusion" of a gay character (Jack Whitehall as Lily's brother McGregor) is so forced and ham-handed that it seems likely to offend just about everyone. Granted, this is a Disney film and they probably can't get away with putting three lesbian make-out scenes in every episode the way The CW seems to do with pretty much every show now, but the whole thing is reduced to about two minutes of exposition , never spoken of again, and will probably be deleted from whatever international releases it happens to be inconvenient for. Lets just say they probably aren't going to be winning any GLAAD awards for this one.

Pig is one very strange, very sad, film.
Personally, my favorite BR property is Blackout 2022. The original is a classic, but the story put me to sleep, and I don't feel too hot about the sequel, either. It's a great sandbox for good writers to play in.
I can't WAIT for The Green Knight, I've watched the trailer an insane amount of times already.

Jungle Cruise
Vexorg describes it as a "standard issue Chase-The-McGuffin plot" and it certainly is, but a number of curiously ambivalent and incoherent elements stand out.

- There is a major gay character, but he's mainly employed as a silly comic weakling and therefore not credible as a killer and a hero, nor as a useful adventurer.
- One of the villains is killed, because he's a madman and a persistent global scale threat, but accidentally, because the heroes are the sort of people who wouldn't kill in cold blood.
- On the other hand other villains are left to perpetual magical torment rather than allowed to die, for no discernible reason except that it's a cool sequel hook.
- Lily Houghton wants the magical flowers that cure anything to cure people, but we don't see any of that; the status quo is preserved.
Re: Movies you've just watched
jungle cruise has been our new background movie. we keep throwing it on when we're gonna play on the switch or shitpost on messageboards and it's nice to look at when we look up, but we've never made it all the way through or really paid attention. I'm sure we'll actually sit down to watch it sometime this month

The Awaken Punch
An early 70s basher flick with a few folks who went on to bigger careers in the Hong Kong action and crime genres in the following years. Pretty decent action, and a revenge plot about guys who con ladies into being prostitutes while also trying to buy up land so they can sell it for sky high prices for development. Not the greatest movie out there, but finally a release where the action sequences aren't so dark that you wonder what the heck is even going on.

Charlie's Angels (2000)
It was a singularly dumb and bad movie with tons of cringey, dated year 2000 garbage in it. That being said, it was fun enough for something quick to watch while you're eating dinner, and thoroughly succeeds in the primary goal of amusement.
Highlights include Drew Barrymore, Lucy Lui, and Tim Curry. Matt LeBlanc was a standout low point. Crispin Glover gets a special mention for being so weird, and I still can't decide how I feel about Tom Green here. Everybody else was either merely competent or forgettable.
Again, not a lot to say about this movie because it never tries to pretend to be something it's not (a goofy, lighthearted action film) and it does what it does perfectly well and succeeds in amusing.

Charlie's Angels is one of those rare movies that can pull off "So bad it's good" status. The second one, on the other hand, was just a mess (it earned seven Razzie nominations and won two for Worst Actress and Worst Screenplay.) More of my thoughts here.vol.2 wrote:Charlie's Angels (2000)

Mrs. Doubtfire: ***
Classic early 90s comedy where Robin Williams dresses up as an old British nanny to spend time with his children after a divorce. Notable mostly for giving an entire generation highly unrealistic expectations of the abilities of prosthetic makeup to be applied quickly. Robin Williams is, of course, Robin Willams in this one, as he largely ends up playing the same persona in pretty much everything he is in, with slight variations based on the MPAA rating of the film (mostly in terms of whether he has to sneak his more risque stuff past the radar or fly right in front of it.) Most of the supporting characters (up to and including Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan) are pretty forgettable, but I'm pretty sure 99% of the audience was there to see Robin Williams anyway.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I enjoyed Doubtfire when it came out, but I feel like it's probably dated terribly. It's also kind of a kids movie, or more of an un-kids movie maybe.
As you've mentioned previously, it's absolutely a vehicle for Robin Williams, and familiarity with his public persona has a huge impact on one's (at least my own) reaction to the movie.
Having grown up watching Mork and Mindy, I really liked Williams, and I was definitely looking for him to succeed. Mrs. Doubtfire was a good movie to me because it not only showed the depression lurking under the surface, but it offered a glimpse of hope. It wasn't until What Dreams May Come that I totally jumped out of the Williams camp. That was where he made the full transition from hope to nihilism, and it was just a bad movie to boot.
Really sad that he let the demons gobble him up in the end. Maybe it was the dumpster load of cocaine, who knows.

Apparently it was dementia mislabeled as depression.

The thing people need to understand about mental illness is that it isn't a matter of attitude or willpower. You don't "let" the demons gobble you up any more than a cancer patient "lets" the malignant cells gobble them up. A person with clinical depression committing suicide is every bit as delusional as someone going through a bad LSD trip.

Who said anything about suicide?
Drug additions are commonly referred to as "demons," are they not? I was talking about the way he shat his career out his ass at the end of the 90s.

I think it lacks that jaw dropping quality that End had, but it's not really fair to compare. They stuck the landing better than anyone could have expected given the total disappointments that were 1.0 and 3.0, so I have to say I'm happy with it despite the crazy wait.xxx1993 wrote:Evangelion 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time. our local theater is so empty that it doesn't feel too bad going to the movies. last two films i went to there were only like 3 couples in the whole theater and we were all spread out
